DH and I just bought a 30' Wolf AG ...Will I regret it ?

I was not so hot on the idea of spending so much money on a Wolf but he really wanted to.

I decided to check it out here anyway just to make sure we wont be stuck with an expensive piece of you know what.

What I have seen here wrt Wolf 30" scares the daylights out of me. It appears that there is some issue with the Wolf 30" AG range which seems to come up often and the resolution seems to be either

a) caulk and duct tape,

b) doing something with some "riser"

c) changing pressure -messing with regulator etc

d) some gas line work etc.,

even if its fixable I dont have the energy to run around getting it fixed.

What I want to know is this: How many people have a wolf 30" AG range that works without any problems, and when did you buy it ?

I am 6 months pregnant and have had to eat out for the past 3 months due to the kitchen. The guilt of doing that is eating me up already.

We already have a GE Cafe which we bought, which is scheduled to go back and be replaced by wolf. Its still not too late. Please help.

I'm one of the ones with the issues w/the Wolf AG range. Chances are you "might" be OK with your new purchase. We, however, are quite glad to be rid of our problematic Wolf and very happy with the new American.

That said, if you do have issues, Wolf was very good about servicing (except for the one guy that thought I was crazy) and in the end, did the right thing by buying back the range, in full plus installation. In other words, they stood by the product.

I do think though there are still some unresolved issues with the AG ranges that were put in to production for the 2007 year. (mainly because no one could figure out what the problem was and fix it!) If that has been resolved, you should be great for many years!

As to your solutions listed above -
a - tried on some ranges, didn't completely resolve the issue.
b - the riser is not the issue as some have had issues with the taller risers
c- the problem was not the regulator but it was replaced anyway.
d - gas line - be sure your gas line from street to house, house to range etc meets the standards of Wolf as stated in docs (ours did, but still had problems)

If you stick with it, most if not all problems with the ranges I know about were noticeable right off so it shouldn't take you long to see if the burner/oven issues are evident in your range.

Best of luck with it. We were about to purchase a Wolf AG 36 until all the issues they were having with the AG for 2007. Knocked it out of the running for us. We purchased a DCS and are happy with it. From those posts I read the issue showed itself pretty quickly. Also seemed as if it got worse as it went on. I seem to remember someone just having an issue with one burner not long after delivery, but soon afterwards it got worse.

Perhaps you could call Wolf and explain your concerns and that you found out about the issue they had with burners and the oven working. See what they have to say. Perhaps by now they have taken a step in the right direction to correct it once and for all. As was mentioned previous, apart from the anquish etc. that the owners had to go through, Wolf stood behind its products and took care of the customer. I might be remembering wrong, but seemed like those that purchased a 2006 model or earlier have had no problems. I think there was some sort of change made for the 2007 model. I'm sure someone else will chime in that was part of the whole issue with problems with their range.

...what they are looking for is a specific gas line pressure. If you have it you should be fine.....if the diameter of the line is so important, why is it not on the spec.... Say what?! Of course! you need the correct gas pipe sizing also! The unit wants to produce a flame of a certain size (BTU) - it needs to be able to burn a certain amount of fuel to be able to do so: you cannot provide the requisite amount of fuel with an arbitrary sized pipe simply because you have the correct diameter. Pressure in an "open" line (such as one with a flame at the end of it) will only govern the speed of transit of the molecules through the pipe - not how many molecules of gas there are to burn at the end. Ultimately it is the fuel flow rate (and other things such as amount of air mixing) that govern whether or not your flame-maker makes a "proper" flame. Seriously, Marion, you can't make the same big fire if you feed it one briquet every 10 minutes as you could if you fed it one big log every 10 minutes or one bundle of firewood every ten minutes. Feed rate is only part of the story. I have a wolf cooktop and they absolutely have a gas diameter spec too. Unfortunately, Wolf doesn't have the efficiency of the European manual writers so the gas pipe sizing is in a different location in the manual than the supply pressure specification. I used to have a Bosch and with proper Germanic logic, all supply specs are properly collected under a very logical sounding subtitle. The wolf takes more specing and if you were interested, you would call and check sizing with them. At the very least, you ought to do so for the Bluestar - you don't want gas-burning appliances to be configured in an off-nominal situation. Bends and turns impact the effective impedance on your line and while they can be an issue for you (I'm not going to get into it here) ultimately, being able to reliably give each unit the fuel flow rate is really what is required. On the fact that hte Bluestar is functioning well while the Wolf was not: Here's an odd little coincidental tidbit. My wolf unit says I need a supply pressure of 7-14 water column inches - that is, at the in-port to the regulator. I used to have a Bosch which said its regulator wanted to see a supply pressure of 6-14" water column - same point. I never had any discernible issues with the Bosch and I never knew what the pressure on the supply pipe was (oh yes, both wanted a 0.5" supply pipe to the unit). Well, with the new Wolf, I did have some issues and made a service call. Service guys found that the supply pressure was not-quite 5 water column inches - instead of the requisite 7" (pipe sizing was fine). Well, it was the same thing for the Bosch - it was only the cooktop that changed, not the rest of hte house. I didn't "see" a problem while using the Bosch but clearly, it was still obviously an off-nominal setup. Ergo, it didn't mean that there wasn't a problem. The regulator really should be driven within the parameters it is designed for - badness can accrue otherwise. I'm having mine pressure bumped up - I would at least check with Bluestar what its requirements are. I'd be surprised if the needs for a heavy duty range are the same as a cooktop!

Don't give him cold shoulder. Lay it all out. Specifically. I don't like it when you _____________ because I feel _____________ when that happens. Then tell him what you will do. Example. My 7 year old (yep, because that's how old your dh is acting!!) keeps not appreciating what I do for her. Not only that, but acting like a little brat prior to us doing fun stuff. I finally told her today that I am tired of feeling like this. I told her I cannot control what she does, but I can control how I react to it. So the next time she doesn't listen to me about eating in the living room or whatever, I'm not going to get all upset. We're just not going to do the fun stuff we had planned. it's the regular black walnut. There are three knots on my top actually. I wish I had thought to take a far away shot when I had Jen's camera last night! Next time I will back up and take a full top shot for you guys. I can't believe no one else is in awe though. I never Ever thought rubbing alcohol would take of permanent marker from waterloxed wood. I wanted to contribute my experience- we got the capital culinarian all gas 48" w/ the griddle (so we have 6 burners) within the past year and I have been using it for a few months. I LOVE LOVE LOVE our decision!! I too did a lot of research and did not read many negative reviews about it- and they are very well built, pretty, and simple design-wise (my husband is a contractor and thought they were most similar to the commercial ranges he has worked on, i.e. if something breaks it would be easy to fix). I probably wouldn't need 6 burners just for cooking- but it is nice to have. I also do a lot of canning/preserving, and do use 6 burners at the same time (simmer for warming lids, canning pot, pot for extra hot water, pot w/ stuff to be canned, pot w/ syrup for the stuff to be canned, one pot w/ dinner cooking). My husband loves the griddle- very easy to make breakfasts, hot sandwiches, etc. You could always do 4 burners and a grill/griddle as an option if you don't can/need 6 burners. Also, I really enjoy the big oven on the 48" (not sure how this compares in size to the 36" since the 48" has a large and small oven and the 36" one large oven). It can fit 9x13" pans side by side, and cookie sheets. The roll out racks aren't as smooth as some of the other brands we looked at (we liked the thermador racks the best- very smooth) but they work pretty well. Also, I haven't had any problems w/ the baking heat/evenness, and our oven is gas (which I think is typically worse than electric ovens?). I haven't baked bread yet- but have done a lot of other foods (cookies, casseroles, etc.). So if it were me I would definitely do the 36" over the 30" :-) It sounds like you would use it w/ all the cooking that you do. If you have any questions about mine please let me know :-)

I have a 2007 Wolf AG range that we have been quite happy with. I would buy it again as I wanted open burners and they're only offered by Bluestar, Viking, and Wolf as far as I know. I have the 36" but think 30" is perhaps better for quicker preheating. All the 36" ranges have cavernous ovens that seem to take lots of time to preheat. If you want to read about my experience, use the Search feature at the bottom of the Appliance Forum page to look up "Wolf AG range". I think the thread was called "Zoenipp, are you still around?" Anyway, maybe it will help you make an informed decision.

Hi all: I have also just ordered a Wolf AG 30" range, and was shocked when I saw this thread. I read through the other threads here, and asked my Wolf representative, and (of course) she said they have heard of no such problems.

I decided to send Wolf an email, to see if there was some "class" problem with the 2007 models of the 30" AG range. I got a reply, and Wolf acknowledged that from "time to time" any kitchen product from any manufacturer will experience some problems. They also said that the burner problem described has occured in less than 1% of the units produced, and that they are extremely confident in their product.

I will post a follow up here after we get our range installed and working, to let folks know if things are "good" or "bad". Like always, the negative experiences seem to get all the air time, while many time the good experiences go unreported. We'll see how this one ends up for us.

I am a big fan of Wolf AG and I have got one in the late 2006. Never had a single problem whatsoever. I am moving to a new house and ordered the same.

As Wolf noted in their email to msloane794, any appliances can have issues. It is all about how confident and how trustworthy the company is. On that note, Wolf is worth the shot!!!!
