putting a built-in microwave in a base cabinet?
Comments (6)Be careful with putting countertop microwaves in a cubby below the countertop - some MWs require a few inches of airspace above, to the sides of, and/or behind them and are not designed to be built in (except with their optional matching trim kit, which has air vent grilles but takes up the extra space you were trying to save). I prefer true built-in microwaves for this application (or the multi-use GE Advantium 120 30"w wall oven, if you have the width)....See MoreDoes the design of this cabinet unit work? Hiding microwaves etc..
Comments (26)Yes, the air circulation requirements are fine. No longer have the option of using a trim kit (unless I put it in base cabinets elsewhere, which would be even more inconvenient with all the bending) as the depth of this unit would have to be increased from 18" to 21" to accommodate that sort of microwave, which would eat into precious galley kitchen aisle space, so this is the only option at the moment. I'm thinking of making the corresponding area on the other side a drawer (not sure if that's possible at that height) as then I can get past the design issue of one section having a single lift-up door, and the other having two doors....See Morehiding OTR microwave vent duct
Comments (10)So to answer questions back from you all... Re photos - in the top photo you see the empty space where the microwave should be installed, and the upper cabinets above it that were supposed to house the vent/duct into the wall to run outside. The contractor ran the venting to come in from the ceiling instead of into the back of the upper cabinets above the microwave. The second photo was one attempt at a solution- to stack a 2nd cabinet on top of the uppers. Not a great fix in my opinion. The microwave is existing and was less than 1 y/o so no need to replace it. This is a remodel not a new build and all the electrical etc was set up there for a stove/microwave combo I guess short of buying another upper cabinet w/ different dimensions, or custom building some sort of surround for the vent, I don't really have any other ideas. But at least you guys validated what I had already researched as options. Thanks....See MorePutting countertop microwave in base cabinet
Comments (10)Well, it was easier for us probably because my hubby designed and built (and painted) all of our cabinetry, so it was only a matter of adding an outlet to the back of cabinet to plug the microwave into. But yeah, so long as you have some ventilation clearance it works just fine! That doesn’t mean there aren’t cons to it though... about the only real con I can think of is that you don’t get a good view of the display numbers, the angle is wrong for that. That was only tricky when we first got this new microwave though... we don’t use ours a ton, and we tend to use the same couple of functions over and over, so you quickly memorize what to push without worrying about seeing the display. I suppose another con would be if you have young children who are fanatical button pushers... it’s right at the right level for them to be tempted to play around with. In my case, my five children are all older teens and young adults now. I haven’t found it difficult to bend a little to put stuff in or take it out (and I’ve dealt with bad back) and when I clean it I just sit down in front of it for a couple of minutes to be more comfortable. Hope that helps!...See Morejaksown
