Drop-in or undermount tub... AND shower?
Comments (27)Thanks, advertguy. I think I can picture what you did now. I had thought you put the marble *on* the tub, and I was wondering how you attached it -- but now I understand you put it *under* the lip of the tub, and then tiled up to it. That's an interesting idea I might consider, although it might be hard for me to bring the front end out the extra two inches because of the depth of the alcove; I want the tiled face of the tub to be a flush continuation of the full wall entry to the bathroom, and I think I'd need to move a wall a few inches to do what you did. But thanks for the idea, and thanks for the lead on the Kohler tub! By the way, do you have any regrets about using an acrylic tub versus porcelain-on-steel (what we have in our 30-year old tub now) or cast iron (which seems to me to bean unnecessary extra expense for a fixture in a guest bathroom we don't use often) or other tub materials. I know some people have very strong opinions about what type of tub they want, but having never bought a new tub before, I don't think I really care as long as it looks and feels okay. -- Eric...See MoreCan a Drop-In tub be installed in an alcove?
Comments (28)I am now very committed to installing a drop in tub in a three wall application. I too, like most others decided on this so I could tile the front. When I started thinking about the waterproofing in a little more detail it became apparent it was going to be a problem. Here is my though for waterproofing. the three closed sides. 1. Use the manufacturers tiling-in bead 2. Install cement board to top of tiling-in bead 3. Waterproof cement board with Kerdi. 4. Run Kerdi long to get 1/4" overlap onto tub and secure with Kerdi Fix while filling void between tiling-in bead and Kerdi with Kerdi Fix. 5. Install tiles leaving 1/4" gap to tub and fill gap with 100% Silicone Tub at 3 walls My though for the open wall is this. 1. Frame pony wall with 1/4" per foot slope at top to ensure excess water sheds to floor 2. Install small back stop on inside of framing to ensure no water can get to the inside of the framing 3. Place backer board and install Kerdi from Back Stop, over the horizontal piece and into the vertical. 4. Fill small gap between tub and tile with color matched Silicone Tub at Pony Wall: And yes, none of my doodles are to scale. Does this seam like a reasonable waterproofing solution?...See MoreMore comfortable? Undermount or drop-in air tub?
Comments (4)davmp-We searched google for every "kitchen and bath supply" place within a 50 mile radius, downloaded the directions to the GPS and took off. We also checked the manufacturers websites to find any 'where to buy' places in our area. Bain Ultra has addresses of 'where to experience'.. bed and breakfasts all over the US. The places listed as 'showrooms' weren't very helpful as every tub was filled with water. Kinda makes you wonder if they don't want anyone sitting in them. Bring your bathing suit! The tiny-looking place that we almost couldn't find is the place where we will be purchasing from. They had a back room full of tubs! They were listed on Bain's website as an authorized dealer. When were were considering a Pearl, I emailed them to ask about an internet vendor, if they were an authorized dealer... Pearl said NO, the do not sell to internet retailers. That made me nervous but it didn't matter in the end-going with the local guy instead. It might be more expensive but if something goes wrong, I can deal with someone IN PERSON....See More5ft. Tub suggestions needed
Comments (10)Not sure how/if I can reply directly. I just happened to look at this links again. For some reason, I don't get follow up.notifications to post comments. I think I am supposed to. Anyway...we had to go with the BASA, because it is a very small bathroom and we needed to fit in a shower/bathtub combo. you can find pictures of the bath in a previous post. There are lots of Bain ultra tubs that are prettier, can be built in, etc....but we were limited by the size and configuration of our bathroom. I am very pleased with it. have had it for almost five months now, and use it almost nightly. From research I did, it is quieter than most air jets and the guarantee sealed the deal for me. It is very easy to clean and we can use bath salts and bubble baths in it. I understand that you cannot do that in whirlpools. Hope you see this post. I will try to remember to check back.
