I'm also fascinated that you actually cut the wooden heart out yourself. DH has a scroll saw, but has warned me against using it. What do you use and what type of wood do you use?

Jane, don't listen to him! If you have ever used a sewing machine, then cutting wood pieces will be easy for you. You just trace the outside line of your pattern onto the wood and then feed it into the saw and follow the line just like when you are sewing. And remember, it won't cut unless you push it against the blade, so you can pause anytime to want and don't have to feel rushed at all. I use a scroll saw and prefer either 3/4 inch soft pine or for thin things like this, I prefer the Baltic Birch plywood sheets. I say "prefer" because I will use any scrap of wood I can get my hands on! ;o) And now with all the scrapbooking pages, even if you don't paint, you can create a neat item for your decor. Just cut a shape, spread Mod Podge on it, then press on a pretty sheet of paper, trim the edges, and add a design or letters. I've seen some really neat word blocks recently on some of the blogs. Women CAN use POWER tools! ;o)

Glad all of you liked it. OA, I can't take credit for the little tattoo. It was already part of the design from Juliette Martin. I have a few of her books and she does some darling designs. I often hesitate to do her designs because there are so many little details and I usually like quick & easy!

Painting is like most other things, the more you do it, the easier it is. So yes, I was feeling a bit rusty-- struggling more with the small detail items especially and some of my outlines are thicker than I'd like. But overall, it's okay, and lots more fun and durable than just buying a paper decoration at Michael's. ;o)

Luvs...that's what I thought about the Scroll Saw..
I've watched him use it, and I thought I could try it..
but he scared the B/Js out of me.
I guess he's afraid of me getting my thumb sawed off! lol
I did use one of his power tools once..yrs ago, and he about died and told me all sorts of horrible things that could happen to me...so I gave up interest.
Now I'm going to ask him again...and tell him what 'Luvs' said!! Then I'll ask for some lessons...
I do sew...so I'll also throw that reference in too!...wish me luck.
I like what you said about the wood...DH has lots of scraps, nicely stored in his workshop..I'll just do my wood shopping there...hehehe.. Also, the idea for scrapbooking is so nice too.
When I taught, and did crafts with the kids in my class, I used to have DH cut out the shapes for me.. Now after reading what you said about how easy it is...all those things I passed up on asking him to cut..I could have done myself.

Luvs, DITTO on what all the others said. It beats the heck out of me how you can turn out something like this so fast too. You always amaze me with your art. This is a cutie for sure.

Jane, your DH is just guarding his tools. LOL. I have a scroll saw and a jig saw, and they are so easy to use. I use to do a lot of wood crafts (like welcome signs and leash racks. Dog stuff of course. Tho I did wall plaques of every one of the Winnie the Pooh characters for one of my GDs when she was little. LOL). All the power tools here are 'mine' come to think of it. I have a drill and an electric sander too. Scroll saws are so easy to use, and safely. (I won't touch one of those big circular saws, or any large ones however, they scare me.)

Lynn, one of my pals over on the painting forum had a "new" scroll saw still in the box for two years! After we chatted about cutting wood a couple of times, she unpacked it and now loves being able to cut out items she wants to paint.

Most saws come with a "guard" in front of the blade, and you just know that you would place your fingers away from the blade to push your piece against the blade. Usually the thing that scares most people is that the blade tends to lift the wood and makes it "jump". You quickly learn to apply a bit of downward pressure on the wood as you push it.

Karen, there are three power tools that scare me--the big table circular saw, a router, and my neighbor's gigantic nail gun! LOL Strangely enough our miter saw (I call it the "chop" saw) doesn't scare me--I love it! And like you, I use all the power tools waaay more than DH does.

When I first started cutting out wood pieces, I loved it so much that I cut out lots of them! I still have a bin full of them that I've never gotten around to painting. (Many I don't even WANT to paint anymore!) LOL

Jane, with your wonderful sense of style, I bet you have really made some wonderful craft projects through the years. I used to do some crossstitch and lots of things using lace and the glue gun. Now I seldom do any except my painting.
