Our Current Build...Don Gardner 'Idlewild'

Thought some of you might like to see the progress on our current spec home build...

The plan is the Don Gardner 'Idlewild' plan and we're about a month out from being finished.

I'd love to hear your comments. Here are a few more specs:

No. 1 common white oak 3.25" in kitchen, dining room, great room, breakfast nook, hallway b/w kitchen and bedrooms 2 & 3, and in master bedroom and master closet. Carpet in bedrooms 2 & 3 and bonus room over garage.

Granite counter-tops (New Venetian color) in kitchen, laundry and both bathrooms. There is still trim work that needs to be added to interior and exterior, like 2.5" battons on white section of front master bathroom window bump-out and base molding around porch columns after the flagstone is laid. It's a work in progress so pardon the mess and cluttered pictures.

I have to determine what style garage doors to put on the house and would love your feedback. I'm stuck between wood doors for the look to match the front door (which by the way is solid mahogany and was custom made by a local custom mill-work shop and I think it looks awesome) or going with a carriage style white door with dark hardware, etc. I don't think I need to do windows since there are three windows in the garage, but it's a spec so I'd appreciate your feedback. Any other comments are welcomed! (As long as they are nice ones!!!)

What's the difference between a "wood door" and a "carriage style door"?

It looks great- I think carriage doors would look nice with the style of your home.

What type of stone did you use?

I really like the look of the transoms above your french door- do you mind sharing what brand it is?

I'm curious to any of you who have actually built a DAG home, are you finding them "dark" like everyone seems to assume when they comment on these plans, are they thinking that no light comes in because of the covered porches? I'd love to hear your level of satisfaction with one of these one story homes with the various porches and covered patios in the back.

Outsideplaying - I haven't thougt about an ironing board! I work at home and it's incrediby rare that I need one. And my husband wears all those wrinkle-free shirts. So it won't be a problem to grab it out of the utility closet! kirkhall - not quite follwing you with the stair suggestion. Funny though... the guest bath access doesn't bother me one bit. My dad has a similar setup in his house and I love it. It's nice and private. I feel like the jack and jill bath is equal distance from the kitchen/great room. You just have to hang a left. And I don't want to have to clean up the kids bath for guests - rubber duckies and toys everywhere now and a gross teenage mess when they're older. Having our powder room next to our dining room table in the kitchen in our current house might be influencing me as well. We often listen to people doing their business in there... while eating! ugh! kacee2002 - thanks, I love them too. They're a dream come true for a neat freak like me. Everyone's crap gets stuffed into them. And I've got all the kids trained now - it's the first place they go when they come in :) Guest closet - no worries. We have one now and we never use it. Ever. We just store off season coats in there. Same with the other closets. We just don't use coat closets. We use the locker and hooks and guests coats are typically put on couch or bed! Worst case scenario, they can hang them in the study! Thank you so much everyone for your opinons on the laundry room setup. Unfortunately, I'm still undecided and have no idea which one works best! Maybe I'll sleep on it!

"Right direction according to whom?" That depends. Parents who will be able to support and care for themselves until death have every right to do exactly as the please. However, if they end up needing the support and care of their children then they need to take those children into consideration when making decisions about their future. I have a friend who's 80yo parents decided to up and move 800 miles away because they wanted to "go back home." Friend warned them that he wasn't going to be at their beck and call if they moved so far way. They depended on him for home repairs, errands, etc. Parents said they didn't need him - don't worry about it. Well, now mom and dad constantly complain that he doesn't visit enough and what's going to happen to them if they get sick? They can't afford to move back and are very upset with the situation they have found themselves in. My friend has stuck to his guns because he wanted to teach then a lesson. Kind of mean but I also understand his side. He says, in the end, it they get sick and need help - he'll have to drop everything to travel away from home to take care of them, possibly jeopardizing his job. The "right direction" according to ALL involved.

Question About Downsizing House

My last house was 3200 square feet with 4 bedrooms, living room, dining room, eat in kitchen, den, library, playroom, office, sunroom and 3 bathrooms. It was an 1898 colonial revival/victorian. I raised my two kids in that house. Once my ex and I divorced, DH and I moved to a condo overlooking the water here in FL where we live for over half the year. It's 1900 square feet. Foyer, kitchen, dining room, living room, 3 bedrooms and two baths. Great for the two of us, but not good if we want to entertain, (or even barbecue) or when we have overnight guests because the guest bedroom is DH's study. And yes it has the high end finishes. For us a small lot was a must (9000 square feet) and walkable to our small city's downtown area. We didn't want to live in a 55+ community. So DH and I are building with aging in place in mind, with all the high end finishes we enjoy in a home. And we're building larger. Our new house will be 2800 square feet +. However we're building our public rooms larger (living room, dining area and kitchen) for entertaining, my studio becomes larger (I'm an artist) and DH finally has his own study that he doesn't have to share with guests who come visit. Our guest bedroom/gym and our master bedroom will be smaller. And yes we'll have the requisite lanai, pool and built in barbecue so our outdoors will become an extension of our living room/dining area/kitchen. Downsizing doesn't mean you have to live smaller but that you live smarter for your needs, whatever they may be. Most of our living is on the first floor (because this will be our aging in place house) with just my studio and our guest room/gym upstairs. And we are building with an elevator in case either of us can't climb the stairs sometime in the hopefully distant future. Our living spaces are larger to accommodate the friends and family we anticipate having over, while we have less "bedrooms" and more spaces that suit our needs.

I guess there really is no difference in the sense that you could have a carriage style wood door, but I didn't really clarify well enough. Carriage style metal garage door with black/oil rubbed hardware on white body color was what I should have said. For the wood one, I was thinking something along the lines of just solid wood with maybe a simple exterior trim detail like a shaker style cabinet door or something similar. View this link to see the picture:

The stone is Natural Ledgestone by Dutch Quality Stone (Visit Website) and yes it does look lighter on their website than it does on the house, but I'm glad b/c I love the way the color turned out. The Pennsylvania looks awesome up as well, as I got to see it on a large column inside the distributor's showroom where we ordered the stone from. PS - Dutch Quality looks just as good to me as Cultured Stone by Owens Corning as was over $2 cheaper per sq.ft. than the Cultured Brand. Also, the water table pieces were like 4" longer per piece or something similar and a few dollars cheaper per linear foot that Cultured. Hearthstones are about $8 cheaper per stone than Cultured. I'm so glad we chose Dutch Quality and I was hesitant at first b/c I had never seen it up, but our stone rep assured me it was his favorite brand for the value.

The transom above the french door in the great room is just a standard transom by Jeld Wen which is the brand on all of our doors.
