Wheel Balancing Beads

Has anyone on the list used this product to balance their tires and rims? I have a beautiful and costly set of wire wheels for my classic 66 T-Bird Convertible and have had problems keeping them balanced without using outside rim weights. These rim weights look terrible on chrome and discolor and corrode the edge of the rim over time. Would beads work better than balancing weights? Is this an economical solution to my problem? Thanks

i have wondered about these beads also, if they work?? you might want to go with the stick on weights on the backside of the wheel where the dont show as much.

I grew up with a 64 mg midget ... had that car forever until someone offed me too much money for it.
As a teen I bought some tire ballancers from JC Whitney - slipped on before the wheel was bolted on, about the size of your typical larger brake disc but sheet metal thin with a tube around the outside edge full of some kind of shot and lube that supposedly always kept the wheel in balance.

Seemed to do the balance job ok on that cars little wire wheels. But do have the impression it was kind of hokey micky mouse technoligy. Regular spinn ballancing of any sort works.

You used to be able to get spoke wheels balanced with spoke weights ... kind of look like fishing split shots. Then you could add matching paint for touch up or they come in chrome too from the harley shops.

Maybe the original owner of these 'fancy' wheels did not like the idea of having balance weights in view, hence, he/she went the route of welded weights that were out of sight. In my opinion, novices should not apply welds to wheels. Before any welds are done, one should know the stress patterns, and how to maintain wheel strength, and if a heat treatment after welding is required, or pre-heating before welding is needed. If the wheel material is aluminim or magnesiom alloy, its gets more dicey. A cracked wheel is very dangerous, especially when the crack occurs a speed.

Typo, or otherwise simply a poor communication occurance. $49 for an alignment likely means a Rear Thrust Angle Alignment was performed. This means the heads are installed and compensated on all four wheels. Similar to a four wheel alignment, except adjustments are only performed in the front of the vehicle. This gives the machine the ability to measure the thrust angle of the rear wheels and aids the technician in centering the steering wheel while the front wheels are aligned. In many way's you can probably chalk this up to a non technician service writer getting tongue tied as he/she attempted to communicate the services that were performed.

How important is balance when you are doing a remodel?

As long as you're remodeling, here's something to think about. Your bathroom has 2 narrow pocket doors before you get to the toilet. When my mom got to be about 90, she needed a walker. The hubs on the wheels didn't quite make it through a wider door than yours, so my brother took off her bathroom door. For her, she lost some privacy, but it solved an immediate space issue. As configured, your toilet might become inaccessible altogether. I would suggest that you rethink this bathroom from scratch. Maybe you should throw the closet space into the mix to see if you can't design a much better, more accessible bathroom/dressing area.
