Should I let it go?

Hi all,

We have almost finished the framing stage of our large addition. The framers have made our hallway 5% narrower than in the plans. We wanted to build a hallway that would be generous enough to accommodate future mobility issues, but did not think that a full 4 foot hallway was worth the loss of space. We comprimised on our plan by putting in a 3' 7" hallway (stud to stud). What the framers built for us was a 3' 5" hallway (stud to stud). They added the extra inches to the bedrooms. I really dislike the narrowness of a standard 36" hallway, and now feel the new hallway will feel tight as well.

My question is do I say something to the framers and have them make the adjustments? Or given the upstairs is virtually all framed, do I let it go. I hate to be a difficult customer, but I am upset they did not follow the sizes on the plan.

Boy, do I have mixed emotions!

As a builder, I've goofed on sizes and have only discovered them when I would have had to rebuild an entire floor to remedy the error. The buyers didn't notice or didn't care anyway.

If it really bothers you, it may well be possible to move the offending wall(s) back where they belong, even if they're bearing walls.

On the other hand, when building on spec, I've found that the framing contractors often have very useful suggestions on revising plans. I've moved walls as much as six inches, converted single doors to double doors etc.

I've had curved hallways narrow to 3'4.5" finished width for short sections without it feeling cramped.

Say something! Our carpenter inadvertently placed two stud walls slightly off from where they should have been. My husband mentioned it to the carpenter and the walls got fixed. You're paying for this house, you should get what you want. Get it now, before sheetrock goes up, and they'll thank you for catching it. Husband is reading over my shoulder and says if you don't speak up, it'll bug you forever. Also, if the floor is to be tiled, it may create problems with proper spacing, etc.

well I let them go, but they didn't go, they are still right where i put them, on some pink and yellow lantana i did not even know i had growing in my yard! I found it today growing by the fence in the back yard, it's climbing around some kind of hyacinth weed i forgot the name of it. but it is in a good spot for them, sunny but not out in the open, i will check on them when i get home and I guess bring them in if they are still there, hopefully they will take off and have time to do what they are programmed to do, they are quite tame now, if i put my hand in ther cage, they crawl right on it, and sit, lol, and they have stopped protesting that much when i unroll their proboscis to put it in the sugar water!:-) say a prayer for them! they need all the help they can get at this point! thanks!

Do you work in an office or anywhere else where you could bring it indoors? If not you are probably going to loose it. Being it is special to you, I would keep trying and maybe a small piece will live to start again in the fall. But I haven't had any luck with lavender.

Oh that will be great. I only got 2 CPs and now have 9 on the vine and tons of flowers. I'll nip the trusses. Can't believe it took till almost October to kick into gear. I must have 50 flowers on the CP now. Most of them won't set but it looks like quite a few are thickening like they are pollinated. Still getting lots of yellow submarines too - not to keen on them though. May make them into puree and freeze them for yellow tomato sauce. Thanks!

That sure looks like a grafted Don Juan to me. The healthy green cane coming up from the ground in the back of the photo looks like Dr. Huey. I would dig down around the rose to see for sure. Cut off the Huey sprout, trim off the dead stuff, and just leave the one healthy Don Juan cane. Then I might give it a dose of SuperThrive. Pink Pearls, when you say you purchased it bare root, do you mean in a bag with saw dust? If so, it is possible it had issues even before you planted it. I've never had a great experience with Don Juan. There's so many better red climbers now that I've given up on growing it.

Thank you folkvictorian and worthy for your thoughtful responses. We decided to very gently bring up the topic to the framer. He has agreed to fix the problem, and it will certainly be no small problem to fix as he shrunk the size of the staircase opening to match the hallway. However, he knows his team did misread the plans so he was willing to make things right.
