Any ideas about this sideboard?

I want to unload a lot of stuff and I have no idea of values, so please forgive me as I slowly bother you with individual pieces.

This humongous sideboard eats up valuable real estate in my home, so I'd love to sell it. It is exceptionally heavy, mostly oak - the bottom section requires 4 strong men to move it. Drawer fronts are mahogany, as is most of the interior. The exterior has veneers done in stripes on the lower doors and some interesting detail work on the upper, curved doors.

It has not been moved in a while, but I seem to remember Budapest written in chalk on the back.

This sideboard is 30" deep at the bow front, itÂs 82" wide and 68" tall. There is lots of storage space for dishes, linens, silverware and crystal.

Can anyone point me in some direction as to style? date? value?

It's magnificent!....Huge! Ugly! and imposing and likely was very expensive! I don't see oak....I see mahagony.
It looks 1910-ish to me....and something about it says Biedermeyer.....the second edition!!
Velue?.....depends on what someone is willing to pay....it is not one of the desirable and well known styles.....so "romancing the merchandise" will be of utmost importance!
It's lovely....in a way....big.....unusual.....and I am sure cost a bundle when new.
I see you have one of my Mason's Pink Vista plates there on the left....
Do you have more of it?

Boy, you have good eyes!! It's the only one I have. (One of my mom's things again) Is it valuable? I suppose I would have gotten to it eventually LOL.

You're waxing more poetic than usual today ;) It is really interesting to watch it unfurl. I have those humongous Coreopsis in front of some Dracopsis amplexicaulis that are moving vvvveeeerrrryyyy slowly and now are completely dwarfed by what should've been about the same height. Same spot, same botanical temperament. It's very amusing to see them now. Just as a for instance. The other one is Borage. It's gigantic, and dwarfing my just now starting to bud Buddleia 'Miss Molly'? It's like Gulliver's Travels. I never expected to witness flourishing billowy waves of gorgeous pinky blue swallowing a silvery green shrub with raspberry panicles?! Gorgeous, but odd. I'm living in the twilight zone.

The difference between a PB and a QP is the quality of the paper that it is printed on. A PB is printed on lower quality pulp paper that has a high acid content. A QP is printed on better quality paper and is usually a larger format. A QP is much the same as a soft covered "hardback" book. The genres of science fiction,mystery, and romance have, traditionally, been printed on pulp paper. They were marketed in the less expensive venues of spinners in retail stores and drug stores and were purchased as cheap reads with people buying the next one in the series as it came out in quick order, thus earning a reputation as being formula fiction. That does not mean that there are not some outstanding authors being published. Some mystery authors seem to have a following, and science fiction has a large audience. Judging from who it was that stood, transfixed, in the aisle of the SF, it seems to be largely males. Not always, of course. The larger "art" books in that genre were always graced with front covers of scantily clad, large breasted females. Romance novels attracted the women, obviously. And, then there was the "anime" that had young teens, largely female, entranced and sitting on the floor with books in hand. All of this "genre fiction" was kept in proximity to each other because of the format of most of it. The PBs in the book store were so numerous and sold in such mass quantities that they had to be back stacked on the shelves. That meant running a row of spine out books on the outer edge and the excess was in layered stacks behind that row. People came in and purchased them by the dozens. That is not the same situation with those other works of fiction that are classified under the genre of "literature". Most of those were QP and CL (cloth) format and they are not in series. By, and because of, these convoluted factors these books came to be cheap reads that are printed on cheap paper and meant to be consumed in mass quantities. I spent years working in a book store and observing what went on the shelf and who bought it. Just because it is pulp fiction does not mean that there are no outstanding authors. It does not mean that you cannot store them under the bed, on the stairs, in stacks on the floor of the basement, in large containers or boxes, or where ever you wish. If that is your thing. Be aware that they have no value beyond your own reading pleasure. They are, quite literally, almost a dollar a dozen at most book sales.

I wonder if it is actually from Switzerland, since it has German, French, and Italian text on it. The English text is particularly puzzling. I'm guessing that it must have been intended for export. As for the age, I would guess that it is from circa 1920, but that is just a wild guess. It might be late 19th Century. You might try asking a priest.

Oh yeah!!....It's the 3 color stuff.....very nice!!
I have a cupboard full of the pink/cranberry stuff....It was also made in blue and green and brown....but the 3 color is very rare....only seen a few pieces of it.
If it's a dinner sized plate....it ought to be worth $50 or so.....at least.

Rather than make another thread drop off, I'll show you one more thing.

Is this what is known as Royal Worcester Silver Lusterware?
I've seen much more ornate stuff that looks to be the same finish (on e-bay). This has much simpler lines, but I can't figure out if it's the same stuff.

The sideboard ... very European, early Art Deco period (I don't see Biedermeyer in it at all). Probably 1910-1920.

Your best bet for selling it would be a local Craig's List listing, or a consignment shop. It would be a great acccent piect for someone who has a BIG dining room. Value? I don't know - it's very dependent on the local market, and shipping is $$$$.

You certainly would have to have the right room to put that piece in. But it is quite interesting.

Where I live we have an auction house, a little more of the upscale type, where I'd look into selling a piece like that. Perhaps you could find something similar. I would want it going to a place where there are educated buyers, not just folks looking for cheap stuff. Some of the better auctions will post an advance book of items or at least a list. But the downside is that sellers premiums are higher. Still might be an idea for you, maybe for some of your other things as well.
