Which is better-AWD or traction control?

I am in need of a new car and although I would like both AWD and TC I am not sure I can afford a car with both(I don't want an SUV). If you had to choose one which would be better to have,the AWD or traction control? I live in upstate NY-lots of cold, snow and slippery roads.

Traction control. Face it -- even in upstate NY, you're probably on dry or merely-wet roads most of the time. I live in Minnesota, so I understand :-). You don't need AWD on good roads, but with it you're carrying a lot of extra weight, taking a hit on fuel mileage, and bearing the costs of maintaining or repairing many more parts. Traction control has only a fraction of those drawbacks. Better to spend some money on a good set of severe-weather all-season tires or winter tires.

Thanks Steve. I have a long drive to work so gas mileage is a concern.

The weights hang low on the rear bracket and make your X300 look like a big tractor. If my tractor had a built-in weight bracket I'd get the weights. WWAF in the tires gets the weight below the axle... about as low as it can be. Only downside is that it's a pain to put the fluid in and if you don't add tubes the inside of the wheels may rust. If you search all the L&G tractor forums you'll find oodles of posts like yours and adding weight resolved the traction problems almost all the time.

OK tmajor, just for you you brick totin' son of a gun. The insurance agent knocked on Mr. Jones' door. Mrs. Jones answers and takes him to Mr. Jones bedside and gives him a chair. He then says to Mr. Jones, "The home office has sent me to investigate your claim because of the many injuries listed on the hospital bill. Would you please describe how you sustained all these injuries?" Mr. Jones begins, "We had been building a 3 story brick facade on a new store and I stayed after quitting time to finish and clean up. There were a good many bricks and "bats" left over. The roofing company had erected a derrick with a pulley and rope so I found an empty wooden barrel and tied it to one end of the rope. I hoisted the barrel up to the top of our scaffold and tied off the rope to the bottom set of scaffolding. Then I climbed to the top of the scaffold and started tossing the bricks and bats into the barrel. It was a big barrel and I was thinking how lucky I was that I would only have to fill the barrel 2 times to clean up all the bricks. With the barrel full I climbed down and as I was untying the rope, I figured the barrel would be somewhat heavy so I wrapped a couple of loops of rope around my left hand so I wouldn't lose my grasp of the rope. When the last knot was untied, I was suddenly yanked upwards by the falling barrel, dislocating my left elbow and shoulder. At mid point the barrel struck the left side of my head and neck, giving me a concussion and a broken collar bone. I continued upwards and came to a halt with both hands buried deeply in the pulley cutting them badly and breaking 4 fingers. When the barrel hit the ground the bottom broke out dumping all the bricks. I began falling and the ascending barrel struck my right side breaking my leg and elbow. When I hit the ground I broke both my ankles and fell face down on the pile of bricks deposited by the broken barrel, knocking out several teeth and breaking my jaw. I then turned loose of the rope. The barrel struck me for the last time breaking both thigh bones and my left pelvis.

They put the smooth tires (and slick seat) on so that you don't overload the weak transmissions. :) What you need are tires with ag treads (bars arranged in a broken V shape, like you see on large agricultural tractors). They offer much better grip - they are not offered as standard because they can tear up a lawn if you're not careful with them; however, as you have found out, you can actually do more damage with the smooth turf tires when they are not up to the job conditions. If the ag tread tires (Carlisle makes 'em, do a web search) don't offer enough traction, put 5 gallons windshield washer fluid in each tire - that will give you an extra 70-80 lbs of weight right where you need it and actually lower your center of gravity (important on slopes). You can either put the fluid in by breaking one bead on your rim and pouring the fluid in, then resealing OR run it in through the valve stem (somebody posted on here not long ago about a method they use for going through the valve stem - involves using a garden pump sprayer inserted through the stem. I've done both of those mods to my Craftsman DYS4500 LT and have no traction problems on the slopes in my hilly yard - I'm just waiting for the tranny to give out now... :) :(

If your 4Runner is a newer model it very likely has a VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) system. Im not aware if they have an audible alarm but its possible, you should definetly read your owners manual. In any case a VSC system works within the laws of physics to help maitain control of your vehicle when the computer senses something is awry, like sliding on a slick surface. Your owners manual should give you guidance on how to best operate your vehicle but most likely it will say use the brakes and steer the vehicle in the direction you want to go. The VSC system will help you by using the brakes to enable the vehicle to regain a stable course, what it actually does is complicated but it can brake/release individual wheels to keep the vehicle from sliding/spinning. Of course if you are on a sheet of ice there is just so much that can be done without violating the laws of physics, so drive more carefully and get there alive!

As engine compression braking on adverse roadbed conditions can have severe adverse effects(***), from a safety standpoint, on FWD or front biased AWD vehicles I would first advise you to consider only RWD or rear torque biased AWD vehicles.

Having said that, since FWD is so inherently hazardous in those conditions almost ALL modern day FWD vehicles will be equipped with Traction control, if not both stability control and traction control.

The best of all worlds from a driving safety standpoint would be a rear torque biased AWD vehicle equipped with stability and traction control.

*** On adverse roadbed conditions the front tires' roadbed contact patch should always be reserved exclusively for maintaining directional control of the vehicle. Inadvertent engine compression braking at the front due to your instinctive lift-throttle response to an adverse event can potentially result in loss of control of the vehicle.

Additionally it has now been well documented that engine compression braking will/can interfere with the ABS, Anti-lock Braking System's ability to momentarily release the braking enough and thereby allow the driver to maintain directional control.

Most modern day FWD vehicles have a revised shift pattern that prevents the engine from providing any significant level of braking during a lift-throttle coastdown event.

AWD is better then traction control. Do you know what traction control does? Traction controls limits the power to a wheel thats spining by partly appling the brakes. It can also start to decrease the amount of power the engine supplies so they wont spin as much. AWD is basicly 4 wheel drive that is on all the time. AWD will get you through the snow much easier then traction control.

Here in Vermont and Northern New England, Subaru is a MAJOR player. We do drive on snow covered roads much of the time and the AWD that Subaru has is enjoyed by many little old ladies, teachers (as school is rarely closed when it snows) and commuters. They go in snow. And they also go very well in New England's fifth season, mud!
