John Deere X300 Traction Issues

Just completed my first 8 hrs on our new JD X300!!! Changed my oil and now have 10 hrs on the X300. It mows great! The first week I mowed with it I had several traction problems on our hilly property. I spoke with my JD Rep and asked if the rear trans axle would hold up with Carlisle SUPER LUG Tires? He stated that the X300 could however he would not suggest it with any of the LA 100 series. The X300's just were a better and stronger rider. I sold the 20X10-8 Carlisle Multi-Trac turf savers on e-bay for $85 including shipping, therefore I only had about $40 in upgrading to the LUG Tires! These tires turned this X300 into a traction machine!!! I pull all the the hills in the property without a slip! OR seldom slip, which tears up grass (or aerates the lawn as I like to refer to it).

This mower is the third rider I have owned. Previously a Craftsman 38 inch with 12.5 BS motor, and a Simplicity with a 38 inch and a 14 BS motor both did the job, but nothing like this JD!!!

My Father has an International Cub from the late 70's which has shaft drive and disk brakes along with Hydro, Hydro deck lift, and PTO hook up for tiller or bucket. The Cub has a 16 HP Kohler and is still kicking HARD!

I can only hope this X300 does the same.

Truly wish I could have afforded a JD equivalent to Dads Cub but $10k nope.

Lawn/Garden Tractors aren't made like they used to be, however they are safer for the kids to be around!!!

For all that have the X300 and need extra traction go get Carlisle 20X10-8 Super Lugs and take control of your lawn by the antlers!!!!

Varmint, Thanks on all your feedback, and that of others. I took delivery today of my new tractor. I put it right to work pulling my dump cart full of brush, and my yard sweeper. Maybe I should change my handle to happinessisanewtractor. Observations: This tractor is very comforable. the ergonomics of the Regent are very good. The controls are well laid out and very intuitive. The 18HP Kohler Courage engine is plenty strong, and very reasonable in noise level. Especially compared to my old tractor's 8hp Briggs. The transmission is very smooth (smoother than the x300 I drove, probably how it's belt drive is designed), and pulled my sweeper like it was'nt even there. The ride accross my bumpy yard is just that, bumpy. I'm going to check the tire pressure again, and try lowering it to improve the ride a little. Also, the steering is very precise, but that also lends itself to jolting out of my hands on bumps if I'm not careful. Again tire pressure may help that. I suspect the same would be true on almost any "lawn tractor". Essentially it means I have to keep my speed down in the areas that are bumpy. My old tractor's seating position was closer to the ground, so I may be perceiving that I'm going slower on the new Regent than I actually am. Perhaps a heavier Garden Tractor, ie: a Conquest or x500 might traverse the lumpy terrain more smoothly, but I would not want to give up the manuverability of the Regent, which is fantastic. I have not mowed yet, but did engage the mower. Take note, this thing is powerful, it shot several pine cones like a rocket. The discharge is very strong, which I hope will reduce clumping of my grass clippings. Overall I feel that I made a good choice for my needs. I have to say that Simplicity orange is just as nice looking as Deere Green. I'm looking forward to mowing season & will let you know how it performs.

To jump my RIO, I located the polarized plug at the reverse pedal switch which has two wires in it. The connections are the 1/4" solderless connectors. I made a 1.5" wire with a male 1/4" connector on each end and plugged that into the polarized connectors slots (jumping it), applied elect grease and then wrapped it with good tape to keep it clean. The switch is normally closed. Your going to get a lot of flack for doing this- so prepare yourself. :) I have to do way too much backing up to worry about that switch and have done fine for 20 years without one. Kids are grown and women don't follow me around anymore- so I feel it's safe. :))

Dana: Should you chose to change the tranny fluid, TuffTorq is now recommending 5W50W synthetic oils in some of their transmissions. Their website is www.tufftorq.com. Go there and look up their phone number and ask them. They are more than willing to give you the right information. Get the Tufftorq number off the tranny before calling. They're great people to work with. On another note: Several people have posted that not only did they need to change the fluid, but the pulley on the transmission needed replacing. Make sure you check this, as well as making sure the belt and all pulleys are completely clean. This will cause slipping and similar problems as to what you have. I remember one poster saying his splines in the transmission pulley were a bit worn. Once he replaced the pulley and his belt (JD), he had no further problem. Something to think about.

Here is mine a 2010 X300 There are 2 red wires on the post with the Battery cable. Cable to starter is all by its self. Black on top left, purple on top right. You need to move the 2 wires over to the battery cable on the left. Almost looks like your black wire on the top left goes to the battery post on the bottom left?? The battery post only has the battery cable and the 2 red wires.

The X300 is a good tractor. DonÂt look for it to last like an IH Cub. I have an IH Cub 68 125 which was the first year for a Hydro. Built like a tank and Hydro is flawless. The differential is larger than most full size trucks. Apples and oranges compared to a 300. The 300 will cut better though. In 40 years my cub will be 80 and IÂm sure it will outlast any of the new crap I have today.

I just purchased an X300 and plan to change to either Carlisle Super Lugs or All Trails (ATV tire). I'm leaning towards the Super Lugs - I need better traction than I'm getting now. After further use, are there any issues that have come up with the Super Lugs? How are they when you mow across your slope, and do they slip when you make your uphill turns? By the way, did you need any special tools to remove the wheels? Rich.

Before you spend money for new tires either fill both rear wheels with WWAF (about 6 gallons = about 48lbs each rear wheel) or drop two JD "qwik-tatch" 42lb weights on the back. The bracket is built-in on your X-300.

That should solve your traction problem.

justalurker - thanks for the responce. I've thought about filling tires or the weights - just not sure. Filling tires is probably fairly cheap, weights will cost me about $80 and tires installed $100. I've got a rough, fairly steep little hill to initially climb before I mow (and then the entire yard is a slope), I assume the center of gravity of the weights is low enough that that my front end won't bounce up as I climb the initial hill?

The weights hang low on the rear bracket and make your X300 look like a big tractor. If my tractor had a built-in weight bracket I'd get the weights.

WWAF in the tires gets the weight below the axle... about as low as it can be. Only downside is that it's a pain to put the fluid in and if you don't add tubes the inside of the wheels may rust.

If you search all the L&G tractor forums you'll find oodles of posts like yours and adding weight resolved the traction problems almost all the time.
