House Completed lots of pics!= family room Blinds

We have moved into our new home-- what window treatments did you put in your family room/greatroom? We are struggling..

Right now we are down to -faux wood (creamy ivory white color or cellular opaque) we get LOTs of sun---and the larger windows are over 70 inches wide-- We would appreciate any feedback on Faux wood window treatments-- we are leaning towards that--

What a lovely, lovely house. I do miss the eastern traditional look since moving to the Southwest.

I have no suggestions other than you will find so much wood flooring to be noisey. We put in lots of wood flooring here after the kids left home after college, and they all comment how much more noise carries, especially to the bedrooms upstairs, with the downstairs wood floors.

Beautiful home! Really nice. I got excited when I saw your kids' bath because I've picked those same faucets!

Anyway, we are still mid-build so I don't know what we'll do for our windows but in our current house we have the faux wood painted blinds. I like how they look but they sure get dusty! I don't know how the cellular would compare in that regard. Same amount of dust but not as noticeable? Good luck with your choice, though.

Wow Bodica you have me dreaming :) If you look at the harbor room pic, you can see water out the window, that's the bay, just down the hill and the house has excellent views on that side. The opposite side view is the gorgeous stone court house. In front is a large park owned by the city, and behind is the carriage house now a private home separately owned. I am fairly certain we can't have cows in the city limits :oP But we can walk about six blocks to a fabulous farmers market on the weekends. The furnishings are 85% real antiques (victorian) and a few have come from the original owners (meaning they've always been in the house). A few pieces are spectacular, the balance are your typical eastlake style, but still quite lovely (just not rare). There are a couple pieces not incuded with the purchase that I will ask for anyhoo as part of the offer because they're unusual and special. I'd guess from a rough count it's about 50,000 in furnishings and fittings. The lighting is generally fabulous, with a few changes needed..but I adore antique lighting so that will be fun. It's a state and national landmark home, as well as registered with the national historical society. I'm just starting to look into how that effects our life. In general, because it's such a special home historically, we're not planning on doing anything inappropriate. The only big change would be the kitchen, which has been remuddled over time as a professional kitchen and will be returned to a semi unfitted kitchen when we want to put the money into it. And all of the bathrooms (I think 11?) need to be redone in a more appropriate historical period (they were done in the 80's with formica and cheap tile). A few fireplaces also are hidden or have been replaced with wood stoves. We'll fix those. The three we can see all have fabulous tile...not Morovian, but they have that feel. The whole joint needs to be deflowered! (this thread will now pop up in some unusual searches on google LOL) I mean there are flowers on top of flowers with flowers on the bed and flowers in vases (fake) and flowers in the lace....egads flowers. I'm sure I'll be having nightmares about those flowers for years as I slowly remove them. When it comes to the decor, we'll be historically sensative. I believe that in a softer way, the victorian style is an easy style to live with. The sofa's will be softer, but still elegant, but I'm totally into the heavy draperies and lush carpets :) It will be a "home" but still be appropriate for charities to use for the victorian home tours and special events held now annually there. We plan on allowing that to continue. I grew up in the town in another special house there (Smith house, which was the first cabin in town and is now a modest victorian home). It's not my dream home (French house in Duluth) but if one has to "settle" this is one heck of a home to settle for isn't it? :) (Believe me I'm not feeling deprived at all LOL). It will provide us with a wonderful home for my son and his friends in the future, and if we're lucky a baby or two. And if we're not, the three of us will muddle on just fine there :) The only downside to this is I have to move away from my husband (he'll do one week with us and one week here). But we have to do it for our son. PBJ they can't get me into all of the rooms until the end of the month, and I'm not flying down until I can see every one of them, so we've agreed on the last Sunday of the month. I'm working on my checklist for the visit now :)

Thanks for letting me know those are Flor tiles, Sue! Even better! They would likely work better than the rug I have in my kitchen because the ends of the rug are bulky and get in the way of the trash compactor opening. I have been having a hard time finding the right long rug for the hallway that will run from our front door to the mudroom, too. I will have to keep an eye out for good deals on flor tiles while we do that part of our remodel. I have been really enjoying the home decor forum here now that our kitchen is mostly done, and we will be starting on the rest of the house this spring. We just got cafe curtains hung in the kitchen and dining room today, so it was nice to see your curtains, too. Just enough for privacy, but still lets the light in...

LOL, ZAMSX is right. That goes for everybody living in the house. It is a pain to live staged. I used to spray the closets with Fabreeze "Linen & Sky", pour Pine Sol down the bathroom drains, and mop all the way out the door for every showing. Yup, certifiable. LMAO today. When we were selling a staged house my DH kept asking: When am I going to have my stuff back?!!! I'd say: Soon Dear. As soon as we sell. Soon. LOL Silicon Valley. Wow. I'm in NE. Two different worlds. How's your market? MB- Euro shams would be nice, and 2 regular, with the purple one popping the finished look. -Do you have a couple of white or light slipcovered Parson's chairs for the FP area? Borrow them. Any small chair slipcovered for warmth(Target has slipcovers) will work. Kitchen- Stand the 3 paintings (12x14 or so)leaning against the backsplash wall, vertically , but not completely straight. If you have lights shining on them from lights under the cabs would be nice. The reason I mentioned BM Silkien Pine in the kitchen is because its considered a neutral green. Some buyers are sensitive to green, some are sensitive to blue. You can't win. A couple of light rooms with pale grey/blue, or pale grey/green are fine. The rest should be in the off-white/ cream/beige family. You shouldn't have a problem finding paint to go with Ivoire. Any BM Neutral Whites will work. BTW- I read where you're considering making one of your sons' bedrooms into an office. Don't do it. Leave it as a bedroom. One den downstairs is enough.

I bit the bullet and ordered them today- went with faux wood- hopefully the lighter color wont look too dusty. I didn't go with stark white when with a creamier color- i was afraid the stark white would be too Bright-

We had our entire house done in the faux wood blinds in cream from Home Depot. They were just as dusty as any other window treatment, I guess. I liked that I could turn them so that I could see out some without feeling like the whole world could see in... that way I didn't have to fiddle with them every day at every window.

Beautiful house! Love the cabinet in the guest bath, the chandelier in the kitchen, and all the other little details like that. :)

I'm loving your daughter's room (I'm assuming!)...the purple is so pretty! And, the staircase is very pretty...opening it up at the bottom was a nice touch!

We have zero window treatments yet, but we plan on cafe plantation shutters (real wood) on our great room first floor windows and nothing on the upper windows. We had the faux wood plantation shutters at our old house, and they held up very well and unless you touched them...you wouldn't know they were faux. :)

This may be obvious, but I didn't think of it til a cleaning lady showed me... the round soft brush attachment for the vac. cleaner cleans the wide-slat blinds quickly. You close them flat & vac, then open/close them the other direction and repeat. I think if they are cleaned this way monthly or so, they stay pretty good. We've had them for years and I've been very happy with them.

Also, in our area, Budget Blinds was a great price.

I love your kitchen! It is the same look I want in my new kitchen. We just started building a couple of weeks ago. Could you please tell me if your cabinets are custom? If so, what is the brand/color of paint used on the cabinets and the glaze color? I also really like the granite colors used. Could you share what they are? I am also going to do the island in a pretty dark stain with a hang over just like yours. Also, in the bathrooms, did you use granite or is it something else?

Kristi-- hi-- GOOD LUCK THROUGH THE PROCESS_ remember to breath during the ups and downs.... now that i'm in and living it here's my 2cents. I looove my cabinets Shiloh Soft White with brown glaze... Shiloh Cherry island-- The white cabinets have granite on top (Giallo Ornimental)... I LOOOOOVE the granite so much. Now for the island-- uggg. Honestly if i could do it again i would do the GO on the island-- yes the contrast is nice but the ceasarstone - espresso shows a lot of mess and streaks (we have a lot of sun light) but when i cook (i'm a messy cook) the GO hides everything-- the ceasarstone- dark color shows every crumb.... so think about practicality.

As for what we used in our bathrooms-- we used silestone/granite and corian--- (the corian already shows scratches- so dont use that!) I loooove silestone- no maintance- looks great!! We used a few different silestone colors--

GORGEOUS!!! Thanks for the tip about the Ceasarstone! I liked the Espresso color but will now look at something else. Or maybe it will make me be a bit neater????? lol

But I want to know how you uploaded your pics??? Haven't been able to figure out how to do that on here yet.

Oh, and I REALY love the hardwoods. My last house I had NO carpet anywhere, it was all hardwoods. Yea, it could be a bit noisy sometimes, but throw some runners and area rugs down and its not so bad. I can't stand the maintenance of carpet.

IMwonder- Thank you! Honestly the ceasarstone contrast looks so nice- but for the long term i think the lighter colors that have textured hide soooo much more!
