It's a rocking chair...made out of a very light wood stained to look like mahogany...not too old, not very new.
I think the damaged areas can be repaired but that chair is not worth the expense.
And I think the seat is not needle point but rather some other sort of fabric.
I think I'd send it back where it came from...not really worth spending money on repairing.

I like the chair, do you ? Have it fixed if you do. It has clean simple lines leaning towards "mission style".

Hard to say what kind of wood it is . It's safe to say it's not a quality wood,( oak, mahogany,walnut etc..) but don't let that disuade you from keeping it.

Any skilled/qualified craftsman will ba able to repair those damaged areas. It requires fabricating a piece of wood to fit into each location .

The seat is definately needlepoint based on the photos.It doesn't look to be worth saving, based on the two damaged areas. If the needlepoint wasn't damaged , you could have a ( qualified) upholstery cleaner clean it for you and it will look like new.

As for putting money into it, you have to make that call.It's a double edged sword, if you have the repairs made, you should have it refinished, it will allow the refinisher to do a better job on the repairs as far as being able to work with the entire chair instead of having to work around the areas of the chair that will not be refinshed.

Wood ?? could actually be mahogony (my opinion) or it may be birch. A quick test is if you can push your fingernail straight down in the surface fairly easy -- it usually is not a hardwood Not sure if mahogony (SP?) is considered a hardwood -- truth is that raw mahogony is a lighter shade not the reddish color most of it is stained (this is also the same with cherry) Do the "fingernail test" - it will tell you more.
Do you have the broken off pieces? as these look to be fresh breaks. Looks like someone dropped this chair??-- to do that sort of damage to the top corner.
Like Stocky said -- not too hard to repair-- but could be "time consuming " to do. Will reqiire at minimum taking off one rocker.
Worth? -- go out on ebay and do a search for "mission rocker" and you will find similar chairs like this one.
Cover? -- wifes department -- except if the old one is sturdy enough to take someone's "lard-but" squirming around in it -- then save it as it has great character.

I think the chair is charming. It's in the Arts & Crafts/Craftsman style.

If it were mine and I wanted to know about repairs, I'd phone a couple of the top antique shops in my area and ask if they could look at it for me or knew of someone who could repair it.

The needlepoint seat certainly looks real to me, and I brought the pic into my Paintshop program and magnified it. As to repairing the needlepoint, I suspect there is someone out there who can repair just about anything and again it would be a matter of phoning around.

However, two other possibilities come to mind. One is that you can copy the pattern onto a new needlepoint canvas and recreate it brand new. The other is that I've seen pieces of needlepoint suitable for re-doing a chair on eBay frequently for not too much money.
