I don't know about any additional reasons but I wouldn't want a house without a tub. I don't think I'm alone in my desire to sometimes just want to relax and soak in a nice hot bath.

I think it would be difficult to sell your house without a tub. You'd have to find the "right" buyer or someone willing to renovate right from the start.

If you are truly worried about resale..then you need to keep one tub in the house. If this is your forever house and you foresee yourself in this house for years and years...do what you want.

We only have one tub in the bath that we're going to renovate and I'd love to just have a walk-in shower..but DH wants a jetted tub of some sort and I was on the fence. We are not worried about resale..just worried we might want a tub sometime!

I agree....have at least one tub.
We're both tub people but have a shower for "just in case" scenarios and company that prefers showers.

I wouldn't even walk in the front door of a house with no tub, if I were looking to buy.

Even if you don't usually take baths, you just never know. I broke my foot a few years ago, and could not shower because the cast would get wet. Had to take baths for 8 weeks and hang my leg over the side.

Just something to consider...

I am in the middle of a nightmare of a bathroom remodel, but since this is rockrisleys "forum," I won't complain here. maybe I'll start my own thread when I'm ready to talk about it without crying...ANYWAY, I'm new to this site, and I just wanted to say that (after much debate) my husband and I have decided to remove the tub from our only full bathroom. Neither of us really takes baths, and I assume there are other people out there who share that preference. I would consider buying a home with no tub; although I do understand tubs are necessary for young children. Although even my own child has been taking showers since she was about three (supervised, of course!).

I really think that most people expect to find at least one tub in a home. We're not putting one in our new master bath remodel, but there's one in the kids' bathroom so I figure we're covered. They are handy for various things, but particularly when kids are little or when you're not feeling well and just want a soak. They not difficult to put in though, so you could put one in when you sell if it were a big issue.

You know, I think there are actually more people who want just nice spacious walk-in showers but put in a tub when remodeling because they've run up against the real-estate wisdom that the house won't sell one than there are actually tub users. :-) Just my guess because it seems that whenever I pop over to the bathroom forum there is a question on page one from someone who says just what you are - we don't take baths, we'd like to retire the tub for a nicer shower, why can't I do it? - and a chorus of responses of "for resale, for resale!".

I'm one of those former kinds AND I put replaced our tub with a new one, but I badly wanted to remove the tub of our main bathroom for a nice - er - make that decent - -sized walk-in shower. Eventually, didn't do it. I put in a tub but I just couldn't get enthused over what tub to get, what tub to get, what tub to get the way I did over the tile, the faucets, the countertop, and yes, even the WC. There is a tub there - it is still uninteresting - I think it is the Kohler Tea-for-two or the Kathryn or something. Whatever.

This is my first house, resale was a consideration, and if when we sell the house the next set of buyers aren't bathtub people, I will hurt someone.

So, basically, I don't know what to tell you. I badly wanted to pop the hatch on the tub and not put one in again. But I did. Is it the smart thing to do? At the moment, it continues to be an annoyance. At resale time, who-knows coz that hasn't happened yet. So, how do you factor in the cost of having to put in something you don't want for some future anticipated benefit at some indeterminate date for an unknown buyer who we expect will fit a certain mold in terms of their bathroom preferences??? Dunno! Take from this what you will.

My advise would be to put the tub in.

We are renovating a house we just purchased and for the younger kids bathroom my DW also decided that she did not want a tub. There are other tubs in the other kids bathroom and we are putting one into the master.

We are currently renting a house that does not have a working tub, only showers. Even though we hardly use tubs, my wife recently said how much she misses one. Everyone has those days when they just want to soak in a tup of hot water, not having one will make you eventually regret that decision.

Just my 2 cents.

I am building a house. I didn't want a tub in the master because DH and I don't use tubs. We had one in our last house and we used it 3 times in 7 years. I wanted to use the tub space for a larger shower and larger vanity. But DH, the realtor, and the builder said it would be a bad decision to not have a master tub - that we needed it for resale. We will have a tub in the guest bathroom, I should add. Anyway, I gave in and now I wish I hadn't. I still don't want a tub and we plan to live in this house for at least 15 years so I would rather have the bathroom I want for 15 years and deal with the resale risks then, rather than have a tub now and know that someday I might sell the house to someone who otherwise would not have bought it. Ugh.

We don't have a master bath but we have an upstairs bath that serves all the bathrooms with a tub/shower and a downstairs bath that we just downsized into just having a shower. We've been in our house for 14 years and I've never once taken a bath. But, having at least one tub does come in handy. Where else could I soak my miniblinds???? lol

Why not put the tub in the guest bath? Since it'll be in the guest room, and you like showers, you never have to use it. But if you ever have guests who do like tubs, it's there for them. And if you ever want to sell your house, you'll have it.
I think those are two good reasons to put one in. I don't see the downside of installing a tub, but plenty of potential reasons for regrets later if you don't.

I think this is a very interesting question. I bought a condo in Vancouver on the 4th floor and was told that it would effect renting and resale, because the Chinese were so superstitious and Vancouver being very Asian. I said, oh, well, then why do they put in a 4th floor? I bought anyways and well I've had no problem.
So you have a valid question. Just because your bathroom wouldn't appeal to North Amercians (which I happen to be one of...and am about to consider the same question with my new bath...shower!)it might appeal to a different demographic group. You rarely see baths in Asia, and only when they cater to our North American standards. As water gets more expensive, we are going to be forced to look at different ways of cleaning ourselves, and bathing uses too much water. So I say do what you want. I am leaning to removing the bath also, as I don't bath, but shower.

This question is just so apropro (sp?). My DH & I were just discussing (i.e. arguing) about it. We have a 3 br ranch. We added a nice master bath with a separate shower and spa tub. We are now thinking or renovating the hall bath. He wants to can the tub and just put in a shower. I say you HAVE to keep a tub/shower combo, again for "resale" - not that I ever plan on leaving. We are the only 2 in the house hoping someday for grandkids which I also want the tub use for baths. (I use it right now to bathe the dogs once in a while). So, even though I am not telling him about this thread, I am reading it fervently.

I haven't been in a tub for decades. My child preferred showers as soon as he could stand.

DH is a dedicated shower guy too, but then he came down with pelvic floor muscle dysfunction, and frequent hot soaks are a requirement of the therapy and ease the pain.

I'd keep my options open. We don't plan to leave, but lives change.

We had a similar discussion over our bathroom...I vetoed his idea to get rid of the tub for the same reasons as you did..for a baby and/or re-sale in the future!

If you aren't planning on moving and don't want one, then don't put one in. We remodeled our master bath in our 3 bedroom ranch about 3 years ago. Instead of a replacement tub, we went with a walkin shower with a bench. It is much safer as we age. In addition, my fatherinlaw moved in with us last year, and he LOVES it. He can step in, sit on the bench and use the handshower. He says it is way safer for him as well.

In addition, it makes it waaaaay easier to bathe the dogs than hoisting a 100 lb dog into a tub. Much easier to walk him into the shower on a leash and sit on the bench myself to hose him off.

We recently remodeled our spare bath, and I did place the tub in there. However, I have absolutely no qualms about not having a bath in our master bath. That spa-like space is definitely a "bonus" for any potential future buyer.
