More closet space or add a bath tub?
Is a bathtub necessary? How many bathtubs does a home need? I live in a 5000 sq foot home. The only bathtub is in the main master bedroom. There is a second master suite that I am remodeling, but is limited on closet space. Should I give up the built in closet space and add a bathtub across from the vanity? I know people will dislike the closet as it is, but it isnt much different now and I havent had any mold or damp problems. Thank you!

Comments (27)It doesn't matter how old the thread is when it is the first thing that pops up on a Google search when looking for the answer to this question.....And then, someone repeats this kind of nonsense on a new thread "A bathroom has a bath tub. It's legalese. It's not a "full bath" without a bath tub." I found this gem first thing, while looking up the reference to this exception where New York doesn't require a bathroom AT ALL. §RR306.1 Toilet facilities. Every dwelling unit shall be provided with a water closet, lavatory, and a bathtub or shower. Exception: Owner-occupied one-family dwellings subject to the approval of the code enforcement official. "NYS has several modification to allow construction of owner-occupied single family homes that have minimal technology, and may heat with wood or other renewable source of energy. This language allows, for instance, construction of Amish residences with little electricity (other than battery operated smoke & CO alarms) and with outhouses rather than bathrooms. Hunter camps may have a similar minimalist construction. Comments (10)Since it's on you, I'd go after Kohler again. Simply start anew. Get a written diagnosis from the second evaluator. Send it to Kohler and start a warranty claim. Pretend it's the first time you've called them. 1) Tub was purchased from _____ on ____. 2) Tub was installed on ____ by a licensed plumber in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. 3) Within days of the installation a squeaking noise was heard. 4) You had two people come out and diagnose it as a delamination. Include the written report from the second person. 5) State what you want: A new tub. I'd also contact the point-of-purchase. They sold you a bad tub. As a follow up to the initial phone call claim with them, include the written delamination assessment made by the second evaluator. Send them the same info noted above. Written letters and emails start the paper trail. Phone calls are great to "shake the tree", any time you talk to anyone note the day, time, person you spoke with, case/claim number if they assign you one, and take brief notes of the conversation. Kohler is usually pretty good about claims. Best thing I can offer is to be calm but firm in your conversations, be businesslike. And keep good notes. When I've dealt with things like this, I've kept my notes in a document file on my computer. If I talk to someone new, I'll email them the file while I'm on the phone with them. Depending on the situation I might password protect it or convert it into a pdf file before sending it so it can't be muddled with by the recipient. No, I've never done or had done a gel injection. I've never heard of it being done. Not saying it won't work. But I've never had a tub delaminate! As a bit of a last resort, talk to your GC. If Kohler is claiming the tub was installed incorrectly, that falls back on him and on his plumber. You might be able to get separate letters from the plumber and the GC saying that the tub was installed IAW the manufacturers instructions and that they agree with the evaluation that delamination as a result of a manufacturing defect are the cause of the squeak. Again, all that is based on the tub having been installed correctly. ie, it's not a drop-in tub that is being supported by the rim instead of by the base/feet for example. Comments (12)Why Sanitary napkins as shown in the photo? Also lotion? Are you going to do a hot water hook up to the tub? I know people who have had hot water hook up outside so they can rinse and wash the dogs before they come in the house. I always bring my boy in and use the warm water and sprayer in the tub. He jumps in and out by himself, does not slip on the non -slip bottom, but one of those rubber mats would work....See More

2 years agolast modified: 2 years agoThe dimensions of your bedroom is a bit odd. I wonder if you use the space efficiently. I don't think you would have enough clearance for your shower door if you put the tub where you drew the extension of the closet.
The layout below will give you more closet space and a tub but honestly I am not too crazy about inserting a free standing tub in a tight space. It is hard to clean it and the floor around it. A tub surrounded by a deck is not as bad.
Note: The shape of the closet drew in the layout is the most efficient in terms of storage and floor space used. It also has no corners inside the closet. Clothes tend to be hard to reach when they are in a corner.If you like, you have room to add a linen cabinet beside the shower or keep the wall to mount a towel bar.

2 years agoI agree that closet can be close to bathroom but I think having it right beside the shower is a bit too much.
In the layout below, out of the 24 ft long, you could reserve the last 5 ft at the bottom for the entrance of the closet. You would be left with a 19 ft wall for your bed and night tables.
By not placing the new closet beside the shower, you have room to mount a towel bar close to the shower. I added a linen cabinet onside the bathroom but if you prefer you can just have a longer closet.
