does marble tile go with white ceramic?

I thought I was done making the choices for the bath tile and had paired big white ceramic tiles with marble accents and DH is threatening to veto choice due to difference between ceramic and marble. Any pictures out there where these are mixed with success? Thanks!

I am planning 3 bathrooms at once and am going crazy. Glad to find you all here.

Absolutely!!! Lots of bathrooms use marble accents and white ceramic tile! It's pretty darn classic. You often see white subway tile with marble. Do a google image search and you'll find hundreds of examples. Here is my latest bathroom, with white ceramic and calacatta marble accent tile.

Stacy, love your bath! I think I saw it on the deco forum...
And raro, we were thinking of mixing white tiles with marble, or a faux marble porcelain. Saw the olean faux marble at lowes--definitely a contender.

I recently saw a Sarah's House episode with a master bath reno using glass tile (or at least I think it was glass) on the main wall and plain white large format tile on the other walls with an accent strip of the glass. I thought it looked fabulous.

What exactly is DH objecting to? The care/maintenance issue?

There is a huge variety of porcelain and ceramic tiles. And many different whites. I would highly recommend getting a ton of sample tiles and laying them out near your marble subway tile. That way you can find a tile that looks just right for you. I think overall mixing the marble and the ceramic tile will look lovely, as long as you carefully choose a white that compliments the marble. Not sure if you're tiling the floor, but if you are, perhaps you could do your white ceramic on the floor as well and do a trim around the room in the marble. I think this might help tie the tiles together so that the marble looks like a special feature you've added in as an accent.

You don't have to stick with the black and white. I painted tiles with oven bake "glass paints". You can stencil designs onto them... or do as I did and paint them to look like Victorian China... then break the pieces and use them for mosaics. I covered a pitcher with them and you'd never know it wasn't made with broken China pieces.

Mayflowers brings up great points. Figure out your style for this bathroom. Is it vintage, modern, contemporary, traditional, country. I love all those tile examples for wall to ceiling tiles. 25" for the toilet is very tight, and as you mention, bathroom will not meet code. Could you put one of those neoangle showers in your shower location? It will open up that mid room area between the sink and the toilet. I actually can't see how you will access the shower in your drawing posted above. Floor tile needs to meet standards for floor tile. There should be labeling to that point, on the box. The HD tile that you post is very expensive, unless you love it. I'd look at something cheaper. If you used plain 4x4 or subway, I'd go with the stuff from HD or Lowes, many have had good luck with it. But it is plain. Tile the wall all the way to where ever you want. But in my opinion having only one wall of tiled wainscot, to the cabinet, might look odd. The tiled wall to the ceiling is a contemporary element, but might be a better choice. Don't add a bunch of elements with the tile. One wall of tile is fine. wainscot is fine (but IMHO, only if it goes around the room). I wouldn't do both in this very tiny room. Draw it all out on paper in elevations for each wall, like you did in the first drawings you did at the top. Then see what you like. You can layer paper on your drawing to change out elements, sort of like paperdolls. I did find this 32" shower door that looks like it slides open on each side. Is this what you are doing?

I am in the process of building a master suite with white subway tiles and "marble" hexagon floors. My top is a solid surface carrara color. I choose a light grey vanity that picks up the grey in the marble veining, and I painted the walls BM Hale Navy. Pictures don't do it justice. It's glorious. (Don't mind the dirty walls. It's a construction zone. lol)

If you take into account the difference in material thickness it's fine, design/taste issues aside. Ceramic is sometimes thinner, often less than 1/4, glass can be thinner or as thick, stone is always thicker starting at 3/8", going to 1/2" thick. Thinner stuff has to be made flush to the thickest elements, by hook or crook.

YES!

Border/accent tile is White Thassos mosaic, niche is lined with White Thassos select (shelf is same), trim around the tub surround is same (instead of bullnose tile). Field tile is glossy white porcelain. They really do look great together (better than the pics).

I am bumping this....I'd like to break up the white subway tile in the shower with a small band going all the way around of marble mosaic. Will this work, given that the mosiac will be thicker than the subway? Is this the reason that I cant find any pics out there of something like this? I haven't researched this, but can I get subway in 3/8 thickness (w/o spending a ton!)?

Your best bet would be to define the thicker border by a relief tile (such as a pencil trim) on the top and bottom of the border. The trim piece sticks out further than both the wall tile and border tile, and you won't notice the difference in thickness of the two. It also gives the border more importance, and in my opinion makes it look more finished.
