Bronze Vase - Oriental ? Inscription ? Age ? Artist ?

I know only a very little about Oriental items. Enough to know that the mark on the bottom is called a "chop" it's the artist's "signature" and done with a seal...stamp....and enough to know that it's a very very lovely piece.
I think it's Chinese....but it may be Japanese.
I wish I could tell you where to find an expert in Chinese art.

Grouted the heart plaque, and also grouted a little shoe shine box I mosaice a few days back. I didn't want to cover all it's age, so only mosaiced part of it. You can view it in "gifts". Hi Carmin! So nice to "meet" another fellow color addict! Sounds like you and I have very similar tastes. Your favorite colors are among mine as well, and I cannot live without a touch of turquoise in every room! I love the photos you've posted here -- OMG, those chairs are simply to die for! I've never seen anything like them, but now I want one! LOL! Love your artwork -- those exuberant colors just really put a smile on my face. (Oh, and you really have a 10-year old fish? WOW!) As for paint color suggestions, gosh, I'm not very good at offering specific ideas to others. My game plan thus far has been to just to go a paint store (Sherwin Williams or Lowes/Home Depot most often), and browse through the sample cards until I find something that appeals to me. It's kinda like I know it when I see it! I can see how you might feel intimidated about doing a color wash or similar aging technique, but definitely practice on your boards. I found it pretty easy (and actually fun) when I did it in my breakfast room and bathroom, but I'm not a perfectionist and I'm sure it would show to a professional! I'd love it if you'd post more pics of your home. I adore older houses, and I'm sure yours just oozes charm! I'm also going to check out the blog you mentioned. And it just so happens that I do have my own "color blog" -- actually I started it intending to talk mostly about color and decor, but I've found that I just enjoy writing about other things that come to mind as well, so it's a mishmash. lindac, thank you so much for your advice. I am looking over the site on seals. I also found a translation page, but I am trying to determine what language the lettering is from - then I may be able to go character by character and decipher what it says. I now know to go from the right up and over to the left and down. The characters are so close together it is hard to determine when one begins and one ends. but I will keep working on it. Perhaps someone that can read Chinese or Japanese will see this post. Hopefully. Now that I have a couple of photos of it I will check with a few antique dealers and see what they say too. thanks again.

Don't worry about translating the chop....that really won't tell you much...but concentrate on identifying the style. To me it looks different from other Chinese vases I have seen.
I am also curious about what makes the chop stand out....what is that white around it?

When I took the photo of the chop, I lightened the photo, so the chop would show up better. When I look at the bottom the white is actually kind of greenish and I think it is oxidation or patina that has settled into the crevices. I wiped it with damp cloth, but it doesn't come off and I don't want to rub on it or scratch in the crevices. The middle of the chop is actually worn somewhat from it being placed on various surfaces. When I just look at the style, it looks like a more 20th century style piece, say 1920 or 1930, but whoever made it was definitely an expert at bronze. Perhaps it is made in the lost wax method. I don't know. I did find a Asian art site I posted photos on. Members look at art from all centuries and give advice, perhaps I will get some info from them. When I was looking on a chinese character site it said that the characters might give some information as to the name of the piece, where it was made, and the artist, which might help determine more about it.

I just got another post from someone who has referred me to several auction houses on the East Coast who deal in Oriental art, I will email them and see what I found out. This person is thinking it is Art Nouveau style made about 1900 - but are curious why an Art Nouveau piece would have a Chinese chop. They will probably have someone who can read the chop at the auction houses and decipher when, who, where, value of the piece.

Chinese chop marks are a signature....even today businessmen in China sign documents with their seal....chop.
I also believe it is early 20th century....the style is certainly not that of earlier decades.
If the piece was made by someone "famous" then the chop should show you who that may have been....but perhaps ti was someone with a limited out put? Then the info on the mark may be harder to find.
Whatever....it's a terrific piece!!

Hello, so far someone has said my vase is Japanese from the late 19th or early 20th century and they believe the characters to say TO (island) TEI (established, settled), DO (copper), KO (fragrance, incense), KAISHA (company, corporation), SEIZO (manufacture).

There is a Japanese museum near me and I will be calling them on Tuesday to see if they know anyone who can further interpret the characters and their meaning on the bottom of the vase.
