How to make finish beautiful on antique furniture?

I have purchased some old walnut chairs from an antique shop. They do not really need to be refinished, but what can I do to keep original finish, and yet help the exposed decorative wood look really lovely again, and get that lovely patina? They were purchased from a somewhat scrappy shop, but the style is worthy of those I have seen in good shops, where they have recovered theirs, and made the finish look beautiful, with its pretty patina that only antique wood has. Before I recover them, what can I do to restore the finish so they look lovely again?
