My Mom is home after a fall in the hospital

My Mom is home and I hope safe...

They were really pushing for her to come home last week....

But she fell last Wed on the concrete Floor OUCH~~~~

No broken bones at 98 can you believe that...

The Dr kept her 2 more days to be sure there were no broken bones.

I bought her home Friday and the home health care nurse came Saturday to see her.

Say she will need lots of physical therapy ....

We have a commode in the bathroom and one in her room plus a shower chair.

Now next week we are getting a wheel chair and hopefully a hospital bed.

Her bottom is so sore and busied from her fall that is is hard for her to get up and down and in bed/

She is eating like a bird hard eats at all.

She is looking very old and weak.

I feel so bad for her she still wants to do all she can to help but the poor thing cant even dress herself.

Me I have finally got the rest I needed and am feeling much better.

My back is still giving me problems but the patch I wear seems to help the pain.

Imabest, these gals are sure made of stronger stuff, aren't they? ;-D
I'm happy to hear no bones were broken; my Mom fell outside two years ago and broke her bone just below her hip. Pins fixed that, but the bruises took so long to heal!
As for not eating much, do you give her something like Ensure or Boost? They're not fond of them bcause of the think consistency, so I used to put it into my blender with more milk and froth it up: she said it was like a milk-shake! Our doc even suggested those slurpie things from a convenience store! lol! 3,000 calories to fatten her up! At this point in time, a Food Guide isn't what they need, he said. Naturally the basics, but calories do count, too, and she needed them. Never did the slurpie thing, but the Ensure really helped. ;-)

You have a full plate now, don't you? I hope the physio goes well and that her appetite improves....

Kathy, Had you in my thoughts and prayers and was going to post this morning. Good to hear Mom is at home...sorry about the fall...tell her I send a big hug and to rest and eat so she will get her strength back. Good news to hear that you are feeling better....still have to take care of you....how is your weather...hope you and Mom get to enjoy your deck. God Bless, Nora

Wow, that is so pretty, Kirk! I like how you find things to re-purpose, very cool idea. Yep, our nights are dippin' down a little here in Oklahoma,(I hear the song every time I type that word, weird!)But not to 14 yet. I notice you still have some green grass left, though. March 31 will be 5 weeks. Grandmother did have one bad day last Tuesday, her fever was 104.5 (that is not a typo) I thought her brain was cooking! It took for ever for them to get her some tynenol. Then when she did get it 2 hours later it was huge pills that she could not swallow so then they sent back for liquid. That was bad I did not like seeing her that way. After she got the medicine, she was fine. She has some conjestion now, but no pneumonia no other change except she is just weeker. I stayed Sunday night. She was up every 30 to 45 min. from the bed , to chair, to potty. Around 3:30 to 4:30 am she did sleep or I guess I did and just did not hear her. Mama came in at around 11:30 am to change the shift. She had my son with her because school is out this week so for me to stay she had to keep him. I took my son home who is 9 so he is no trouble at all. I fell on the couch at 12:30 and did not wake up until 5:00 because I had to potty. I told Mama this morning that she is just going to have to leave her some times. THis is not living for either Grandmother or Mama. Mama's sister did stay some last week but It does not help much. The sister works, she will get to the hosptal around 9:00 or 10:00 pm and Mama has to be back at 7:00 am so the sister can go to work. So then Mama stays all of that day and night until someone else can stay. I told Mama she needs to get tuff with Grandma, the only thing the nurses have to do is give her drugs. We give Grandmother her bath, change her sheets, get her ice, drink, get her to the potty, etc. SHe will not eat so she can not go home and the Dr said unless the insurance starts to make waves she will not go home unless she starts to eat.

Thank you all. Uncle passed away at 11 pm last night. He is at peace and now will know all of us. He had alzhiemers in addition to other health problems. Mom had more tests done today. Monica, thanks. Her neurologist didn't find anything. He checked everything he could think of, then told her there were no seizures, and he could not help her at this time. If there were ever anything else he could do for her to please call. I was impressed with him. Lydia, the cardio she had over the weekend is leaning that way! As I have read all of the thyroid posts, I have wondered about it for some of her other problems. Her dr is still leaning toward heart, but I am hoping that the cardio will get someone to order the thorough thyroids. Flamingo, I am sorry your mom is going thru this. Mom had a pacemaker put in two years ago because of this. It has stopped her going completely out, but has not stopped it completely. Tami

Usually the key to having the hospital replace is some documentation that they were in her possession on arrival. Often the nurse's admission assessment will not just note specific items in the belongings list, but note that the person uses specific assist devices like hearing aids. Hospitals do replace dentures, glasses and hearing aids, it is not uncommon, but each one will have its own policies about it -- there is no universal requirement or standard. Unfortunately it is often a case of the items set on the food tray after a meal and not noticed when the tray is picked up -- and no way to trace it, since TJC considers the meal ticket as having protected information & it is supposed to be discarded before it leaves the room. I would keep going back to the hospital and ambulance company. Sometimes things turn up long after with no way to identify the owner. They could have been dropped anywhere from the room to the truck. They could still be in a drawer at the nurse's station, or in the pharmacy bin or any of the locked drawers for that room, or now in the hospital's lost and found. Or in another department if she went for a test - especially MRI. At the hospital, it is possible also that they are in a table that was moved to another room - ask them to check all the rooms on the unit, I learned to not just carefully record what my new patients had with them, and I would bluntly tell them that they risked having anything valuable stolen if they kept it, but I would also specifically state "No jewelry, No money, No credit cards" and so forth. And tell their family to NOT bring anything else.

Hi Kathy... So sorry to hear about your mother's fall. She probably hurts as bad as if she had broken something. (Thank God she didn't...) It's good to hear that you are rested and feeling better; also, that the patch is helping... My mother was 97, so I can relate to your dear mom... I'll be praying for her. ~breezy

Hey there, Kathy. SOOO glad she is home and know you are too. "Tis always good to get them back in their "slots", no matter the work. I hope you can make good use of the help and eqpt and spare your back some. Bet you will have her perked up and eating better in no time, if it can be done. You have obviously taken such good care of her this far.

Oh, I'm so glad to hear that she didn't hurt more in that fall--it could have been bad! My Mother is 95, and I know that if she just bumps against the wall, she gets a major bruise. And yes, whatever it takes to give them some calories.

WHo gave the hint about the Ensure in the blender with milk? Great idea! I'll see if that helps.

But, Ima, it must be good to have her home. Here's a hug from me for you, specially!

Ensure, and other things like it, can be very helpful. However, not all of the flavors are appealing. I, personally, think that the Vanilla flavored ones with as little almond, rum or sherry extract added are the best. Almond extract seems to be especially good for cutting that heavy, cloying 'sweet' taste. About 1/2 to 1 teaspoon to a can.

PeeBee, besides adding milk to tone down the consistency, I have added banana flavouring to the vanilla, and she enjoyed that, too! Whatever it takes, right? ;-D
