My Fall Paperweight: A Tribute to Mom

Hi everyone! This is not all that creative but a fun, little addition to our fall gardens. On Friday, I found this paperweight at an incredible price at TJ MAX. Looks so colorful in our garden in the birdbath under our red oak treeÂespecially when the sun shines upon it. The birdbath is a memory for my late motherÂI bought it and the red oak tree nearby with my inheritance to remind me of Mom. Mom loved autumn, and I think she would have loved my new treasure. I wonÂt keep the paperweight outside too long though as we hit 14 degrees last night! Brrrrrrrrr! ENJOY! Bear Hugs! Kirk

Boy is that gorgeous! It looks like a jewel. I'm sure your mother would absolutely love it! What a beautiful way to commemorate her :^)

Gorgeous....that whole theme could be replicated indoors, a few oak leaves, a few stone pebbles, spread out on a charger plate and in the middle that brilliant paperweight.

Wow, your situation sounds a lot like mine. My husband's ex definitely has personality disorders and is extremely narcissitic/histrionic. My 19 y/o SD had emergency surgery last year out at college and her mother did not go! Her father (who was very shut out of her life the 2 years prior) left at like 4:00 a.m. to get there before her surgery that morning so she knew someone was by her side. Mom's explanation was that she thought one parent there was enough (it was an ovary removal -- I'm sure she would have preferred her Mom over Dad being there!). Another time 16 y/o SD was in hospital for bulimia and it was agreed by the staff and her that she would go live with her Dad for a little while because her mother was driving much of the reasons for the bulimia. Mom's response? Called her at the hospital and said "you are really hurting my feelings by wanting to go live with Dad." Yup. All about her (this is the same woman who moved that daughter 2 hours away and just left her son....eventually she tried to talk her son into moving down, but he knew he had it way better staying with his Dad (before we married). Bottom line....it took me a while until I finally "got it" -- I concluded that she has no maternal instinct and so she always puts her needs before her children's. It is bizarre to me, but once I understood the personality issues and that she doesn't have the same "maternal" feelings towards her kids, I understood the selfishness and the no rules household. She really thinks of herself as their friend and not a parent who is responsible for teaching them how to be responsible mature adults (oh yeah, she also took them on vacation and when her son (then 15 y/o) decided not to drink anymore because it interfered with his morning run....his mother and sister were teasing him about being a wimp for not joining them in their drinking every night. Like Sylvia and Sweeby said -- understanding her issues will help you lower your expectations. All you can do is your part. And, since I just read your other post about loving your SS today, I know you feel the rewards too! I think I was rambling a bit...I'm trying to hurry, but I had to say something here because I totally understand where your confusion and frustration comes from! Good luck!

Thanks to you all again! Sam, Jenny and I truly appreciate your thoughts. I am so gratified to hear that you like my projects and feel my home is 'warm'. I do love my little house, and am grateful that I enjoy sewing and projects like these, as you can make something that no one else will have, and do it just to your taste. mjsee, I stained the table first, so no exacto knife was used. I just used math and a ruler to create the diamonds, with a soft pencil, which was on top of the stain. So all I had to do was use the black paint to do the harlequins. I did them by hand with a small flat tipped brush and just tried to be careful. I LOVE old things, so as much as I tried for perfection, they aren't all exactly alike, but that works with an old piece of furniture. The faux marbling was quick and easy compared to those darn harlequins! Lisa, (bungalow) you have that right, although I am perusing Craigslist to see what I can come up with for cheap vintage furniture to play with. I may need to scope out the cellar again. :-)

Hi Lavender! It’s been a while since I’ve seen anything from you. Merry Christmas, and great to hear from you. Diane, I did order Boscobel from them last year. It’s sure worth requesting a catalogue, if you don’t get one. Mine just arrived yesterday, so maybe some are still on their way? It’s 172 pages without the index, and loaded with gorgeous pictures. I just wish I could get my hands on the DA florist roses, as plants. I know they aren’t meant for home gardeners, but I’d sure like to give it a try. They are absolutely incredible. I’ll see if I can get a picture of a page without disturbing my little lap friend:) ‘Charity’ is so unique with her little green pip. Either this one or the next are my favorite. This one, ‘Edith’ might be my favorite. Those antique gold centers are so beautiful! Here’s one more picture. I love the ruffles in ‘Beatrice’. I don’t know why I’m drooling over the couple pages of roses that we CAN’T order for the garden. They’re just irresistible to me. I think ‘Edith’ could be one of the DA roses my niece, Jenna, used in her wedding last year. It sure looks like it. Jenna used lots of warm colors, while Sarena,(the recent pictures I posted) used more subtle colors. They both used lots of gorgeous DA roses, but very different from each other. I hope everyone gets their DA catalog soon. I think it’s the best edition they’ve ever sent me, but I haven’t been getting them for all that many years. I’m impressed by nice selection of non-DA roses, as well. This “Index By Color”, at the end of the catalog is a nice feature, although it doesn’t include all the DA roses they offer. Evelyn and Bishops Castle aren’t in this index. It’s a great way to see color graduation, and I appreciate that they mixed in non-DA roses. It would be a great tool for designing a bed. Too bad it’s too late any new designs around here. I mostly just winged it, and they are where they are...... Lisa

There's no doubt rock and roll and other sub-types of modern music are vegetable soup, blends of many different influences in different proportions without any one predominant source. I can't go along with the premise that any one element had disproportionate influence, such as Native Americans as this program seems to suggest. You might be able to trace influential African American blues or R+B musicians as having Igbo ancestors. Or Mandinka ancestors. You get the picture - folks would say, so what?. The people in the pockets where local music evolved and ultimately contributed to a great fusion represented the melting pot of backgrounds that were present in each area. They learned and fed off of one another over time and all were influenced in music by the multitude of traditions they encountered.

That paperweight makes a beautiful fall decoration, especially sitting in the birdbath! I just love adding touches like that to the garden in remembrance of loved ones, don't you?!

This pic (May 08)is a duck water fountain I put in our birdbath.. I bought it 11 yrs. ago with money from my Mom in memory of my Dad. It's still running after all these winters...bring pump inside and tip it upside down on ground in winter. Over the years I've added chunks of colored glass in the basin.

Wow, that is so pretty, Kirk! I like how you find things to re-purpose, very cool idea. Yep, our nights are dippin' down a little here in Oklahoma,(I hear the song every time I type that word, weird!)But not to 14 yet. I notice you still have some green grass left, though. Your yard is always so pretty.
Jeanne, what a beautiful fountain and birdbath. That is the biggest birdbath I have ever seen!!!! I absolutely love it. What a great tribute to both of your parents.

I am still sweatin' in Texas with green leaved trees (I had to buy glittered silk fall leaves attached to plastic vines to keep me from moving to where ya'll are! Hubs wont let me hang them in our trees though).

I'm glad that the real FALL has come in full color somewhere and has inspired such beautiful memories. How Blessed your parents were. How precious of you.

Kirk, that's a beautiful paperweight & looks great with your leaves in birdbath, lovely memory of mom. JS wow! Now that's a birdbath!! Wow!WE HAVE "fall color today too!! It's called fire- look out front-smoke & fire- look out back- smoke- much blacker. Good news is I've never had to leave but am ready to as worst winds with fire I've ever scene in 42 yrs. So everybody say a little prayer that all these people are safe, especially firefighters & police! Thanks, Jan

Beautiful job with the paper weight and the birdbath.
Jan stay safe in that fire. They showed it on tv and it looks really bad.

Susiewantsroses...wish I was in TX. I am in So CA and not in the fire area but can sure smell the one in San Bernardino. I bought leaves...but never thought about putting in the campor tree out front...yeah new idea.

VERY pretty!! And it definitely looks like fall! I'm sure your mom would have loved it and would have loved the idea that you bought the tree, birdbath, etc. in her memory! Thanks for sharing it with us!

Ok Kirk...I don't know how you can say that is not creative...Who else would think of putting a paperwieght in a birdbath? Only someone who is creative and has an imagination...I think it is gorgeous. I love the colors with the fall leaves. I think your mom would love it. I love fall and I love it. Thank you for another great idea.

Gosh, thank you everyone for your nice comments! Made my day! Although it has been a chilly fall here, the sun has been shining and our fall paperweight has looked so colorful.
