is there a standard for recessed light placement in bathroom?
Comments (9)Pure indirect lighting such as cove lighting is great for "mood lighting," but not so good for task lighting. I'd sugggest a conventional hanging or surface mount fixture that provides both direct and indirect light. That will reduce shadows and give you ample light. Mostly likely only one fixture, maybe two, will be required. This will probably give you a nice cost savings over multiple recessed cans, and will also save electricity. Supplemental lighting with sconces is a good idea for those annoying times when you're trying to get that darn little speck out of your eye, or apply makeup carefully. A surface mounted light bar or even (dare I suggest it? ;-) a linear fluorescent fixture above the vanity or mirror might be less likely to glare in your eyes, depending on placement....See MoreRecessed light or vanity wall light over sink in powder room?
Comments (11)My one bathroom has 2 fixtures that can take 100 watts each. I stocked up on halogen (72watt?) that are comparable. It is very bright in my 6.5x9' bathroom with light gray/blue walls. Very bright for husbands shaving. Now with the powder room, you wont need that bright. I'd think a couple sconces with lower wattage such as 40 or 60watt equivalent lumination would be fine. How big is your room. You can always put lower wattage bulbs in a fixture. I have dimmers, but find that i seldom use them. I like going into a powder room that isn't like a surgical suite. I like lights to add ambience with twinkle and drama, and a powder room could be a great place for that IMHO....See MoreHelp! Kitchen Lighting Placement/Plan/Recessed Lighting Advice
Comments (3)@Kimberly J, You're on the right track. While you've not given us a ceiling height nor details on materials/finishes (all affect lighting design) please consider the following: • Depending on actual pendant choices, your island could handle 3 smaller pendants & your peninsula could handle 1-2 pendants. These might all be complimentary to the pendant style you choose to hang over the table. • Lighting for sink wall & art wall could all be controlled together via dimmer. • Lights for island & for peninsula should be controlled separately, dimmers. Maybe locate the island's pendants dimmer on the island itself. • Before choosing actual recessed light size & final layout, think about the quantity & quality of the light it produces. The Lithonia Wafer LED comes 3", 4" or 6", and the Philips SlimSurface LED comes from 4" to 7". Each is available round or square, and in a few different color temperatures. I suggest using LEDs that are 2700k (a warmer white light like incandescent bulbs). I suggest the attached image for a possible layout. Less recessed lighting than the original. Please post pics when the project is completed....See MoreKitchen recessed lighting & island pendant lighting placement ideas
Comments (1)I don't have pendents or recessed lighting - so no help there, but if you don't have under cabinet lighting, add that to your list. My under cabinet lighting is the most helpful lighting I have. At a guess, I would say 2 pendants over the island, but your lighting store should also be able to help you. It depends on what you use and if your recessed lights light up the island - then pendants aren't necessary. Change out the track light over the sink for sure....See Morejjaazzy
