Go down and expand Wiping Stains. It looks like Sugar Maple or maybe Burnished Oak to me.

Your best bet is post this in the woodworking forum. Folks there will know what kind of wood that is and how the stain takes to that species. Or print the photo and take it to a Sherwin Williams and ask them.

You really need to know the wood because the same stain will look entirely different depending on whether it's applied to ash or oak or maple, etc. There can also be a variation caused by the final coat if a tinted finish was used.

I do know that the wood is alder.

I have been working with Victor, telephone #512-465-4286. Tell him it is Trudy's door and he will probably know who you are talking about. Tell him it is the door on "Lost Creek Blvd." I tried to look up the price but all of my doors are priced together and I couldn't tell what this one alone was.

It kind of looks like Minwax 'Early American' (Sherwin Williams) to me. If you can't figure it out, you can always get an alder scrap from a custom cabinet shop and then take it to SW to test out stains. It won't be an exact match to the finished product, but at least you will have a better idea of how different stains react to that particular wood species.

It looks like SW chestnut which is much lighter and redder than MW chestnut.

BTW Trudy, that pic looks like the community center in that new residential development in Dripping Springs. The stone yard sent us there to look at the sandstone. Is that what it is?
