For Those Of You With Metal Roof Houses--pic

I'd love to see a picture of your home from the outside. I am trying to decide on:

1. color of roof

2. color of garage door

3. color of shutters

4. color of trim

Is the garage color supposed to match the trim, shutters, or how does that work? Below are colors of the door we have chosen and the next picture is the stone we have chosen. Thank you for your thoughts and suggestions.

We have a silver roof and we really like it. We have FLOOD "rustic honey" cedar clapboard and "copper wash" trim. Our garage and barn will not be attached and aren't built yet but they will have the same roof but have the cedar clapboard or shingles in "copper wash".

Gee thanks guys for all the wonderful comments. We are happy with the way it has turned out so far. I love the board and bat, it looks very "homey" as chisue says. I wanted red windows but DH just couldn't "see" it so I compromised with the dark red trim. I think one of the positive aspects of our building has been that DH has opened up somewhat about things that I call "well that's what everyone else does". Not that our house is unique by any means, but he sees a little better that different can be beautiful. I think now he would go for the red windows! covenant-HEY! Know you must be in-how's it going? Loving the Kensington? chisue-yes we are in the South-Bebe is what my legions of nieces/nephews call me! We are in RTP, NC-land of the pines! I will try to get some inside pics later. Almost all the drywall is up and got to see the "rooms" last nite. But I know my favorite room is going to be the screened porch. mightyanvil-thanks for bringing this up-we are just having this discussion today to make a decision about the porch and rails. Since we do have to have the rails the GC also thinks we might need to give up the half piers or it might be too busy. Would love to see some good railings or hear good ideas for them. Here is my crude attempt to add the metal roof portions-we will wait for stone to decide-quoted about $2000 for this! What do you think?

Sweet tea, I appreciate your concern about the gopher tortoises - saving them was our first concern, as well. We actually didn't have any on our lot, after all that; we just had 4 empty burrows! To answer your concerns, though, our wetlands aren't true "wetlands" in that they're not swampy; they're just designated as such, since they're conservation areas and we're not allowed to touch them. They're very scrubby, as well. We actually have many, many gopher tortoises in our community, and most of them live in the scrubby "wetlands" and just come out to browse. We had to relocate one tortoise from the middle of the road last weekend :) (We just helped him across the road - we're those permit cheaters you spoke about, but I can't stand to see them get killed). We definitely got the appropriate permits, etc., to relocate the tortoises to the undevelopable part of our property. We love those little guys, and are always pulling over to get them out of the highways here when we see them in danger. I saw one get crushed a few weeks ago, and it was very upsetting. But we always just walk them across the street whenever we can, to keep them from getting killed. Sorry to deviate from the original thread, but I just wanted to let you know that our gopher tortoises were all okay. Well, we didn't have any, but they would have been okay - no actual "wetlands" :) Regarding the original post, I wanted to add that our metal roof came from Southeastern Metals. Cheers! Just good sense, Hollysprings. Jeep, are you sure you wouldn't be interested in going at least light-er, bounce more of that heat right back into the sky instead of soaking it in? Real comfort and energy bill issues are involved here. Traditionally, a lot of roofs here in the South were even white, including your area, for obvious reasons. I wanted to throw back to that sensible tradition when we custom built 5 years ago, but, to my amazement, the excitingly in-style colors of black, charcoal and dark brown (!,!, and !) were being put on tract developments everywhere at the time and there wasn't a white shingle to be found in the entire South. The best we could do was a pale gray. We also painted our porch floor a light blue instead of the dark woodland green I would have liked, and because of that I can walk out there barefoot these afternoons instead of hotfooting fast back inside, ouch, ouch, ouch-style. FWIW, "Burnished Slate" does go nicely with the woods, echoing the tree trunks, especially when they're wet.

The sunroom didn't have a roof at all for a long time and when they finally put the rafters up, it is flat. It still isn't covered, so they are going to go above that and put the roof, and leave that to seal it off for the inside ceiling. It looks crappy with a flat roof, plus the rest of the house is so steep that when the water shoots off of it, onto the roof of the sun room, there is no way to keep water from going under it. This is supposed to be a 50 year roof. We don't want to have to go back and do it over after a few years, because it leaks. For cabinets, I am using the original kitchen cabinets...which are original to the house. The rest of the cabinets will come from various old glass doored cupboards that I have collected over the years. Cupboards are sort of my weakness. I hate to tell how many I have...okay, believe it or not, I have 20 that range in every size from child's size on up. We won't build any new cabinets. I have some for the sunroom, the mud room, the bathroom, computer room, as well as the kitchen. And I will probably have a few left over. ;) I have a counter that I found by the road when someone did a re-do on their garage/workshop. I am going to have it clothed in beadboard and put a zinc top on it, and that will be the island. The little kitty is one I raised on a bottle this year. I call her Monkey.

Sorry, I won't post pictures of my house online, but I have attached a link to the manufacturer's website. There are numerous pictures on there to look through for ideas.

Our metal roof is from Tamko MetalWorks, in the Sierra Slate Gray color. All of our exterior trim and garage doors will be white. Our shutters will be a dark gray to match the roof. Our front door will have a dark mahogany stain (even the trim is stained...no white paint).

We had really wanted a standing seam metal roof, but our neighborhood ARB said no to our request- unless we used pure copper, and that was WAY too expensive!! We are very happy with the Tamko product. Everyone thinks it is slate from the road.

Ahhh, another metal roof fan! We will be using red, but I'm still looking into what colors we will choose for our siding, trim, accent. I think that your scheme would look great with green. Check out the 2005 Not So Big House Showhouse site below for a photo of a house with green metal roof. But maybe a darker green, if heat gain is not an issue where you live.

dixiedoodle, I have never seen that slate metal. How does it compare in price to regular metal roofs?

I'm not sure of the final price per square because we have a fixed price contract, but I know that material cost is around $225+/square. That is an approximation because the cost of the materials is largely determined by the complexity of the roof (valleys, flashing, sidewalls, etc). Overall, I would feel pretty comfortable stating that the final installed price per square would be somewhere between $425-$500. So, less expensive than some...more expensive than others.

Quick point...metal roofs are not all that common. Make sure that the installers have installed the system before!!

ours is a standing seam,,is that what you mean?
it's a very dark grey and the house is stained dark grey shingles with bright white trim. i love it,,it's classy and somewhat nantucket looking.
i will post a picture if someone can give me very simple posting directions.

Do you get much snow? We're in our first winter with our standing seam metal roof, and we're glad we discussed at length with our architect just where the snow will go when it slides off. It will slide off and if you don't remove it quickly, it will accumulate. Look at blindstar's back door. yikes! (sorry, no offense, blindstar).
Our roof doesn't "match" in color any other elements of the house except for gutters and downspouts which were made from the same material. It's sort of a neutral grayish green that can be paired with many different colors.
If your summers are hot think about lighter colors and research 'cool roofs' on the internet (coolroofs.org). We wanted a galvanized-look roof until we learned that many painted metals would actually keep the house cooler in summer.
I like to see shutters, trim, and garage door all the same color.

I'd love to put a metal roof on my house but I have no idea how much more it costs vs. an asphalt roof. Is it twice as much? 3 times? Help me out. Can anyone give me a ballpark estimate (vs typical dimensional asphalt shingles?) thanks

nacnac when I investigated it for my old house which had a 4/12 pitch and some lower slopes the estimates where 2x-3x depending on the metal thickness.
