Glucose numbers/ blood work

87year old mom lives with me...recent blood work had her glucose levels at 109...the Dr. just wants to take a pro-active approach to keeping it from going higher and has ordered a Glucose tolerance test for her. What can I do in the meantime to help this situation? We were told to cut out "white" (breads, refined sugar etc. )--- any good sites you can recommend where I can begin my "research" into this problem? Thanks for any help, suggestions and ideas.

I can't imagine a doctor getting too excited about that number! It's very close to 'normal', as I understand it. Ask him to do an A1C test before a glucose tolerance test.

And just lay off sugar, white bread (altho sourdough bread is not so bad, and the whole wheat that isn't just colored white bread, bagels are awful). Limit white rice and potatoes to small servings No juices, like OJ, that's more sugar than sodas.

Was she fasting for the bloodwork? My doctor did the glucose tolerance test first, when it came back high, he put me on meds and a diet for about 6 weeks then did an A1C to check and see if the med were working...my whole family is diabetic and my grandma that lives with me has lost both legs due to it. What kind of health is she in other than this, being 87, is she in good enough health to put her through all the test, i know my poppa was 82 and when he started getting sick he didn't want to go through all the test and stuff, he just wanted to be comfy for his last bit of time, but if it would have been up to me he would have done it cause he might still be here, although, that is a whole other thread, sorry. I would def stay away from anything white, soda and juice. There are a ton of websites on diabetes. Good luck!!!

Thanks everyone. My doctor hasn't raised my blood sugar as an issue at all (except 24 years ago when I was pregnant with DS1). I'll call her when she's back in the office next week. DS2 may actually be after his dad (my DH) to be tested and he's using MY results to draw attention to the issue. DH hates to go to the doctor. He went 2 years ago for his first physical in 15 years! He'll be 55 in August. I got him to have a colonoscopy last year after I 'went first' to prove it's not that bad. DH's father WAS diabetic and had his feet amputated! He passed away at age 68. DS2's only memory of his grandfather is THAT condition! Lorna -- thanks for that tip about fruit and nuts. That's actually what I do anyway. I eat a few walnut halves with my apple slices and pineapple. I put cinnamon on my blueberries in my cereal with a few pecan pieces. I have almonds with oranges. I love the combination. We keep a variety of nuts in our pantry at all times. Thanks again, Cameron

I'm female, 5' 7", 125 lbs, my cholesterol levels are great, I eat healthy and work out at a gym daily. My BP was around 105/65 since I was in my twenties. Two years ago (at 52) I got a sore throat with swollen glands so I went to the doctor. My BP had gone up to 175/95 overnight! I know this because I check my heart rate and BP at the gym every day and it was my normal 105/65 the day before I got the sore throat. My throat culture came back positive for strep throat (which my doc said isn't too common among middle age folks) and I was put on antibiotics. The doctor wanted to wait until I'd finished the medication and the strep had cleared to see if my BP went back to normal. Unfortunately, it never did, and I had to be put on BP medication. My doctor thinks the strep throat somehow shocked my system and caused my BP to be permanently altered. On medication (the lowest dose possible) it hovers around my previous 105/65, but if she takes me off that low dose, it shoots right back up again. So I guess I'm on meds for life now. Just wanted to share that it's possible for BP to go haywire with a virus or bacterial infection and be unable to regulate itself back to normal afterwards.

Thanks guys. The clinic opens at 7 and I was part of the line-up outside. They opened the doors early and we all took a number and registered. At 7 they started calling names and we got our blood drawn. I told the nurse that I asked my online friends last nite and they said that water makes it easier to draw the blood. She agreed that water is fine to drink. I was home at 7:25

Well, the drink wasn't too bad. I had an upset stomach before we even started. If I don't eat within an hour of waking up, that happens. I had to pick up the orders at the dr's before hand. My appt was at 9:30, they finally took me back at 10. Finger stick said 118 at 10. Between 8 & 8:30 it was 101. They got blood first try every draw. I don't look to pretty, but I only felt one stick, so they were really good! I have to lay down and not see them do it or pass out. I took my knitting with me, so I didn't get bored. My GF came in about an hour before I was finished for an EEG. She has been having virtigo with headaches. We finished at the same time, so we went to lunch together. That was the best part! I should find out the results the 12th. If I have it, she'll send me to a nutritionist. Thanks for "being there" with me! It helped lots. Tami

I need to add a little... first of all, blood sugar levels vary widely during the course of a day. 109 is not a dangerous level in any book that I've read, but I am not a doctor.

But I will say that if I am 87 and have no other major metabolic health issues, I'd be eating cake three meals a day. ;-)

my thoughts to, 109 is not high, so I am def with sushipup on this one, if i was 87 and no major problems, i'd eat what i want to too!!

Thank you all for the replies...yes she was fasting the day of the blood work. Her health is good, except for arthritis and joint problems (has had a knee replacement and needs a shoulder done but Dr. doesn't really want to do it on someone that old) I agree about the number being on the high normal side not really being a real immediate threat, guess the Dr. just wants to keep it from going any higher. For right now, just going to cut out the whites:certain cereals, breads, and the fruit juices, and keep an eye on the labels of things for carbohydrate counts. Thanks for the replies and thoughts on this. Will ask Dr. about an A1C test.
