Transfer chair for car

There are machical seats that can be put into cars/minivans to help get a disabled person in and out of the vehical. I've checked into them and they are VERY expensive. However, there are no samples or ways to tryout the several models so no way to know which is best. This is something I'm looking to do in the near future.

Have any of you had any of these put in your vehical or know of someone who has?

Do you have a Council on Aging in your area? or a active senior citizen's group? Did you talk to the car dealer of the car/van and ask them for ideas? Maybe AARP could help also.

What great options. Digitizing a lifetime of music, voice recordings, movies, etc sure is time consuming. But it's wonderful there are so many options out there. Raven- I had forgotten all about Heartland catalogue. It's been probably 20 years since I ordered from them. Those are some great gadgets. The one with lp too is a bit pricey - esp. since I have a cd recorder connected to my turntable. It's a lot less convenient than having it by the computer - but it works well. The one for just tapes looks good. Grandms'- I don't need the turntable portion, but your post made me think that with the right cables (do you happen to know what they are?) I should be able to hook up my old compact stereo/cassette player to my computer. My question about that has always been that I don't think i have an input into my sound card. Does that mean I have an integrated sound card (without its own input port). But there must be cables that could transfer from a stereo to a usb port. Heck - are there cables that go to a firewire port - or perhaps that's overkill for music files. What's Pyro? Did that come with turntable - or just a program you have? I assume Roxio cd creator could do that - burn a cd? how did you find Cakewalk easier than Audacity? I think I've heard good things about both. And Urlee and Jean love Audacity and find it easy. So I'd appreciate any other thoughts in deciding which software to use? Thanks. Lynn.

THANK YOU! This looks like something that would do it although I'm not understanding how the gadget plugs into the two ports at the back of the old Panasonic (perhaps it just needs another cord with the red and white plugs at each end). I also did more web searching and came up with the Ion u-Record Music Archiver at Think Geek I'm not sure how it works...as it too just seems to connect the computer with the old music outfit, but this one seems to need software installed and I'm wondering if it is for more complex stuff than I'm trying to do. Has anyone used this? As I said before, I'm not very computer savvy (I'm from the old LP era) and appreciate being able to do this without a lot of frills and hassles. The lineset is the original lineset. It is secure in the attic, but who knows if it secure in the wall. I would think yes, because I cannot move it much in the vertical section, when messing with it in the attic. The lineset set is perfect. I think it is 5/8 and 3/8, which is what the xl15i was spec'd for. I called trane and if necessary, there seems to be a way to get a field rep. I am hoping I won't need it. The problem is the noise is not horrible. But, it is damn annoying and should not be, or they wouldn't sell too many of these things. I am thinking maybe they can move the unit a foot further away from the wall and my unit and put it on isolators.

My advice is not to do it. Have seen too many people in trouble when their children had financial problems or decided parents had to live elsewhere. Better to do a transfer on death than a complete turn over. Although it would be nice to give your children your home you and anyone considering do so should review all of the options. If the children live in the same town but a smaller not as nice home they might move into it. Most will sell it just so they do not have to bother with it. Are you really transferring the house or just wanting to give them money when you are gone? The idea of keeping "mom's house" is for many just wishful thinking. If you are wanting to give them money just sell the house and give each the maximum that can be distributed with out gift taxes having to be paid. Either way can lead to you not having a secure place to live. You also need to ask your children if they would prefer that money be spent on your care or an inheritance. Be prepared for a heavy discussion.

Another thing is if it more that you want/can spend there are agencies and other organizations that will help out. Just ask. Your medical centers, churches, and other groups have funds for these occasions.

While the cost is steep, I can buy the transfer seat. I just don't want to waste the money by buying a product that isn't what is suppose to be. Thanks for the suggestions tho.

This site will give you state by state places that sell things like you are looking for. Maybe you can find one close to you that you can actually try what you want before buying.

We purchased a used van from one of these places. We went to the store and ask to see what they had or could offer.
The one we went to had used Vans and they installed a bucket seat that swiveled and this allowed my mil to sit and then we could turn it.
Call one that is near you and see what they can tell you.
Good luck. I can tell you having a car that I could safely transport my mil gave me so much more peace of mind and freedom. When she could no longer get into the swivil seat there were wheel chair tie downs and I could get her to her doctor even after she was having to be lifted by a sling.

I hadn't thought about buying a whole new van... Even one ready built. I have a Honda Odyssey, which is one of the few mini vans that can be altered, and so I thought to add the seat to it.

We were told that many people who have handi-cap vans are often required by the insurance companies that are paying for them ---have to trade them in after something like 7 years and so then those are put up for sale. That is how we got the one that we got. We drove it for 2 years (did not need it anymore) and sold it for almost what we put into it.

I hadn't thought about the need to call our insurance company. I guess that is something else I need to do Monday. I will check on the ready-built ADA vans.
