yes you can use a ringtone from the pc on the phone but it depends on the phone as to how it is done, it should tell you in the information that came with the phone. Be very very careful of ringtone sites online they are ripe with infection.

they are made to be able to have speakers plugged into them, can be head set, earbuds, small speakers etc. And of course you can buy an adapter to go from 2.5 to 3.5 at radio shack or any electronics store if one would be needed.

my other question Lynn would be since it does have speakerphone ability is there any way to play back your messages in speaker phone, now that I do not know I have never tried it because my phone does not do speakerphone.

Most of those type small speakers come with an assortment of cables/plug sizes as that one does.

but if you want to get really creative you could just take the 2.5mm from the phone, convert it to 3.5mm (using adapter) and then connect a 3.5mm cable that outputs to RCA plugs and then play it through the home stereo.

I think I understand Munch's question - although it shouldn't be an issue for me. I think some computer speakers are prewired with attached wire that runs out from the speaker and in to the computer. Munch - is that what you were thinking?

Anyway I'm pretty sure that my computer speakers have wires that plug in - so there is an input jack that I could plus the phone into. Do I need a special cable with 2.3mm at the phone end and 3.5mm at the speaker end?

I don't so much want to be able to play the message now (although my daughter and I do get a kick out of doing that from time to time). I really want to save them in digitized format.

I was checking back with this thread to ask if there's a way to record it in digital format (is that mp3?). Urlee - you might just have the answer for me. I do have a mic for my computer (at least my daughter has one that I can borrow). I've never used Audacity. Do I need that extra program or would my windows media or roxio creator program do that? What does Audacity do - and is it worth having in general?

It sounds as though once I set this up to record on my pc, that I might be able to do that other project I want - to record cassettes onto my pc. But that would have to be wired directly - I think the sound degradation of just playing the cassette out loud and having a computer mic pick it up would be pretty poor quality.

Lastly - Raven, there are speakerphone capabilities but they don't sound great - esp. on the smaller phone (u410). But I could try it.

Okay - I lied - one more question. Are there inexpensive digital records - to record things like my daughter practicing piano - or a lecture/speaker? I still have my old cassette record that I used in college - but things must have advanced since then. The audio quality does not have to be good for this =- just easy enough to list to and get on my pc (or burn to cd).

Still don't understand how you record sound while playing through your speaker headphone (audio out) port with out connecting to the computers sound card audio in port to record messages before replaying.

sorry, I did not say she had to record it on the pc. I assume she has some type of recording device (like the cassette recorder she mentions) , my point was how to get the sound/messages out of the cell phone in a manner that she could record the sound/messages.
The object was to plug a speaker male cable into the cell phone headset female and utilize the speakers to hear the messages. Using a recording device to record the messages then utilize the recording. I mentioned computer speakers as an example but it certainly does not have to be which is why I gave the example of some little speakers that are used specifically for use on cell phones, or even routing it to stereo system by use of RCA plug.
As long as the messages are in the cell phone she can not utilize them to record so getting them out of the cellphone to a recorder is an option, which is all I was addressing.

I am sure there are many other options and hopefully we can come up with some, I have never tried to do it either so am brainstorming, sorry if that has caused a problem.

Lynn I was just looking at a catalog I got in the mail and saw something that made me think of your comment about wanting to get some old cassettes redone. This is the item, it can take, cassette, lp, 45,78, and put them in digital quality cd, also has usb capability. Anyway here is the link for it in case you are interested. I have no idea of quality but it is by Memorex.

you may look around for other such items I am sure they are not the only ones making these but it seems to do pretty easily what you wanted to do.

they also have one that does only cassette if that would be better, you might want to have them send you the catalog and look through it they have so much stuff you may find something you like better, and I have ordered from them in the past, very fast delivery and good service.

About 2 years ago I ordered a USB turntable (AudioTechnica) that came with software made by Cakewalk for digitizing my LPs. I found this easier to use that Audacity and the Pyro app did the burning to CD. I can also use some of the cables to connect to a tape player output and then to input ports on my computer and have been able to do the same with tapes. The whole thing cost less than $100, but I don't remember where I bought it. I really should make a list of online merchants where I have purchased and been happy with the goods and service. But this is the easiest method I have found for doing this job.

What great options. Digitizing a lifetime of music, voice recordings, movies, etc sure is time consuming. But it's wonderful there are so many options out there.

Raven- I had forgotten all about Heartland catalogue. It's been probably 20 years since I ordered from them. Those are some great gadgets. The one with lp too is a bit pricey - esp. since I have a cd recorder connected to my turntable. It's a lot less convenient than having it by the computer - but it works well. The one for just tapes looks good.

Grandms'- I don't need the turntable portion, but your post made me think that with the right cables (do you happen to know what they are?) I should be able to hook up my old compact stereo/cassette player to my computer. My question about that has always been that I don't think i have an input into my sound card. Does that mean I have an integrated sound card (without its own input port). But there must be cables that could transfer from a stereo to a usb port. Heck - are there cables that go to a firewire port - or perhaps that's overkill for music files.

What's Pyro? Did that come with turntable - or just a program you have? I assume Roxio cd creator could do that - burn a cd? how did you find Cakewalk easier than Audacity? I think I've heard good things about both. And Urlee and Jean love Audacity and find it easy.

So I'd appreciate any other thoughts in deciding which software to use?

some computers like the media center computers do have inputs that can take RCA plugs which would allow you to plug your unit into it but most computers do not.

My desktops with on-board sound have line in jacks. If you can play these tapes in a cassette player that has a headphone jack you can get a male headphone to male rca plug cable to connect the player to the computer and record the messages using audacity. I've recorded music cassettes this way. I found the cable at Radio Shack for less than $3 but I'm sure you can find them on line. No need to pay more than a few dollars for one. I get good quality with the cheap one from Radio Shack.

Yes, my XP is the Media Center version and it does have inputs. But my audio is on-board. When I hook up my turntable and put on an album, it plays through my computer speakers. Then if I decide I want to save this digitally, I open the Cakewalk program and let it do its thing. Once the lp is digitized and saved to my hard drive, I use the Pyro burning program to burn to a CD. Here's where I found out that the quality of the blank CDs does matter. Just wish I had more time to do this.

The reason I bought this turntable is that my old one is probably 30 or more years old and just doesn't have the right connections, etc. for doing the job. Bet I haven't used it in 20 or more years, and don't know why I even brought it when we moved here years ago. Ahh, the attic needs to be cleaned out. I have huge stereo speakers which don't begin to do the job of the little desktop speaker system I have connected to my computer. They need to go out, too!
