bleached oak floors...too dated????please help
Comments (17)Thank you for the responses. I'm not sure if I have bleached oak or white wash. It is not "pinkish" which I've assumed was more of a pickeled, it is more whiteish or yellowish actually after being 20 years old. Bigdoglover (I love big dogs, too btw..) the reason I didnt want to involve the stairs and railing was because it also includes the whole upstairs and hallway (and the floor in my bedroom, but that didnt bother me as much) so, I just didnt want to deal with it. I think what I have decided to do is carpet the stairs and hallway and get the warmer wood in the kitchen/dining/livingroom that I've always wanted. I'll have to just sand and stain the banisters, thats all. I dont mind the carpet in these areas, as it is now I have a runner on the stairs and hallway...so this will just be wall to wall in that area. There are too many problems with the bleaching and besides, my husband really despises it. Thanks again for all of your help. Now on to newer problems.....!...See MoreIs a chest freezer a a bad choice? help please
Comments (41)EngineerChic, My old reach-in freezer crapped out on my and I picked up a new one 2 years ago. This 4th of July with the huge wind storm we had, I lost power for 3 days. I didn't open that thing out of fear. After the power came on, I ran to it and opened the door. Imagine my confusion when everything was still frozen! Not even soft! And I can tell you, when I freeze bread, and most everything for that matter, I forget I have it. I've definitely had bread in there for more than 6 months without any freezer burn. It's a self-defrost (of course) and so far, just fine! So when I go "shopping" in my freezer, it's like a brand new experience. Imagine, "Oh! Look at that! Butter! and steaks! and Hotdogs with BUNS!! I love hotdogs! Who knew? Anyway, everything's beautifully frozen and I can see thru the containers. (No frost.) I try to label and frequently succeed. But I have no bad words about this baby and it's work ethic. If I'd know, though, I'd have bought taller and skinnier. That's all! Congrats on making a choice, Laura. Really, if we're honest with ourselves on how we are not how we want to be, we make the best choices for our situations....See MoreBlanket Chest or Trunk
Comments (9)The paint is orginial, it has just been kept in extraordinary shape. A gentleman that was helping me wrote and said " ...wonderful marriage chest, There is a lot that is impressive about this chest. The detail is extraordinary. Important to understand that this chest joins to families, possibly noble ones. I say that because of the crown shaped lock,as well the monolithic writing of the families initials. you will notice that each side is different.the one on the left appears to be a 3 letter monogram ,(I could be wrong) to me to contain the letters D/ C with a large center letter being an A ( possibly) an H. The second monolithic set of letters is more difficult.I believe it to be a 4 letter monogram , J /C the large center letter being an A (possibly) an H.I am not sure of the fourth letter (possibly a Maiden name). What I find very intriguing is that I have two books on "Monograms and Alphabetic Devices By Hayward and Blanche Cirker Copyright 1970 these books contain about 10 different styles mostly (British and French ),The earliest being 1830 others are 1870/ 74 and 1881 the styles on this trunk are not in those books.Which makes sense as this trunk has an earlier date. Certainly the way the artist joins the larger letter with a ring. The reason I bring this up is that the artistic style of the lettering could potentially tell the artist.Maybe there are other books with monolithic writing from this earlier time period. You may want to seek out a historian that is a specialist in monolithic writing. The symbolism is all over the place on this one ,two different yet similar painted sides with the tying of the ribbon, only 2 flowers in the basket, love birds etc......"...See Morecan anyone help me date this blanket chest?
Comments (5)You may have a genuine period piece that requires closer examination. Photos are not detailed enough to see joinery and I see it has a 2-board top, appears to be original, and the hardware looks primitive. It may very well be 18th Century. The most valuable blanket chests were those made in Wythe County VA, and can fetch several thousands of dollars. What I would do is reach out to the conservator of this historical society for guidance and email several photos if they will agree to look at them for guidance. This is a speciality area and you have to hook up with someone who knows the segment. Be sure to get detailed photos to send to them and they can may be able to give you some insight. To be sure, do NOT attempt to repair or refinish it in any way. Good luck. http://wythecountyhistoricalsociety.org/2018/11/15/wythe-county-blanket-chest/...See Morenutmeger
