All of my viburnums (5 burkwoodii's, Korean spice, Juddii, carlessi,) All of my clethras (a 15' long alnifola patch, Hummingbirds, and a half dozen Ruby Spice) Native Azaleas (arboresens, antlanticum, austrinum, bakerii's, canescens, prunipholium, schlippenbachi, vasyea, viscosums,) and the 30-50 fragrant hybrids in between (from Lady Barbara to Lemon Drop) Lilly of the Valley Vaccinium 'High Sierra' Magnolia 'Goldstar' Saracocca Daphne 'oblongonta' Peonies And I'm sure that I've overlooked a few as I take mental inventory this late December evening. Scent is as important as seeing in the garden.

Next to gardening, reading is my favorite thing to do. I read mostly non-fiction. This past summer I was reading about cooking, eating, and our food supply. I started with Ruth Reichl. She writes in sort of an autobiographal fashion from starting out working in restaurants ,to becoming the food critic for the New York Times, and then on to being editor of Gourmet magazine. I ended by reading Animal, Vegetable, Mineral by Barbara Kingsolver. This fall I read about Blackwater because I didn't know anything about it. That got me interested in reading books about the war in Iraq. From there I started reading history books about the period from World War 2 to the present. I particularly liked reading Arthur Schlesinger's books because he seems careful of his facts and also was present for much of the history he writes about. My sister reads mysteries and her all time favorite is Agatha Christie. She loves the series by Janet Evanovich. She even got me reading the Southern Sisters mystery series by Ann George. They are set in Birmingham Alabama and are quite funny. My personal favorite fiction is the Mitford series by Jan Karon. A little mystery, a little romance.... We just subscribed to Net Flixs so we will be watching movies for awhile. We watched Good Night and Good Luck last night as well as a documentary called God Has Forgotten Us. It was about some young men who'd spent ten years in refugee camps in northern africa and then they were brought to the United States. It showed their reactions to our fleniful food, electricity, and running water. It was very sad to watch as they were so homesick for their family and friends here in the midst of plentiful material things. I also enjoy Book TV on the weekends. I learn a lot there and get ideas for more must reads. We just got a gas wall furnace installed in our basement family room. Now we will have a source of heat if the electricity goes off. We hope we won't need it but I haven't forgotten the bone chilling cold from last years ice storms and want to be prepared.

Thanks, snowheather! I love irsis, too, but unfortunately they don't grow too well in my garden. Wow, wheeling a lemon tree in and out of the garage all winter long is a lot of work to get your lemons, but Meyer Lemons are worth it :-)! I am actually quite the opposite of you I am not a big floribunda fan, but 'Our Lady of Guadalupe' is an exception. Since you are into floribundas I am curious to know what is your absolutely favorite one? Renee, I know from pictures of your garden that you have quite a bit of land and Devoniensis, Cl. might be perfect for you for that reason, since it is supposed to get very tall. So if you like my pic maybe you should consider to grow it... I am gardening only on a small suburban plot and I new when I bought this rose that I may not have the room to plant her into the ground (the rose is growing in a container right now), but I had to find out by myself what the fuss is about this rose, since I only saw Devoniensis Cl. on pictures before I got it. I totally aggree now that her flowers are almost disturbingly beautiful! And her fragrance, oh boy... Christina
