We stayed with nuetral colors for the flooring. We used small tiles in the kitchen, which I didn't like at all! I think larger tiles work much better and they are easier to put down. We used rock on the flooring in the entry way, hallways, bedrooms and bathrooms. We made a horrible mistake in the kitchen using very small tile and white grout. What were we thinking? I'd recommend gray, brown, tan grout; a shade that hides dirt. The white was beautiful when new but I have to bleach it continually to keep it looking clean. I like the rock flooring, but it is rougher in texture then we probably should have used. It accumulates dirt easier, but looks very rich. I like nuetral shades because you can easily decorate your rooms around it. Our one room with carpet is the family room and we purchased a tan carpet. All other rooms have rock flooring. They say by the time you build your third house, you figure it out. I love our home, but I would have done a few things differently. Below is where we bought our bath tub. They have great pricing. If you are counting nickels (like we were), you can save money here on a tub. What blew me away was the cost of faucets for the bathroom and kitchen. You'd think they were made of gold. Isn't it a sweet curtain? My 12 year old son gave me some grief about it, but then again, he gives me grief about a lot of things ;) I don't have any idea about a window treatment, and might skip one...right now we have a white blind on the window, which is more than enough for privacy, plus the window faces the woods.

That's a cool space! Pending your dimensions (can you post a layout?) I don't see why you couldn't do what you want if the toilet stack can be put in the right spot. (Is this a new build or a remodel?) I think moving the shower fixtures to the other side (away from the door) would be preferable from a sightline perspective. Only thing is that you'd have to reach in and around to turn on the water, so it would be harder to get the water warmed up without getting a bit wet first. (We have a recirculator or whatever it's called up to our master shower, so that the hot water is almost instant. If you are opening up walls for new plumbing, see if you can do that.) We stayed at a vacation home once with an awesome 'party shower' that had the fixtures away from the door, but there was a second valve near the door so that you could turn on the water at that spot too. (No temp control there, just on/off.) Also if you have space I think it would be nice to have a half wall between the toilet and the vanity too -- same height as the half wall for the shower. Love the floating vanity. I'm a storage nut so I don't have one, but I think they look great.

In regards to your question about tile, I personally feel natural stone is a timeless look and will never in itself be passe. That said since Travertine is such a versatile and affordable stone with a neutral palette, it's become one of the most popular stone tiles to use; to the point that much like granite, everyone has it. If it's what you want to use though, I wouldn't let that steer you away from it. I would just keep an open mind to other options, Limestone or Quartzite to name a couple. Both are quite pretty and work well in bathroom environments as well.
