snippy manicurist and snippy client

My hands were really dry, cuticles out grown, etc.. I went for a manicure to get me back on track ( a $30 manicure that includes a paraffin treatment).

I always go to the same spa, this was a new girl; I took a few seconds to locate the color I usually use and she said: " we really have to get started, I'm booked solid" so I rush back to the table. She takes one look at my hands and says, with a serious face, looking me straight in the eye:

"do you use hand cream?"

I burst out laughing, (I had had a rough day, don't mess with me) so I said:

"now that's a loaded question, do you mean to ask me if I EVER use it, or do I KNOW I should use it, or do you mean my hands are so far gone you're not sure you can do anything for these babies?"

She relaxed a bit after listening to my answer, told me to use cuticle oil and hand creme everyday, ( like I don't know that stuff already, give me a break); if I book a manicure , repair my hands and I'll pay you gladly, don't ask me

"do you use hand creme?"

Some days a simple question can set me off.

I guess my post was all about venting, I still gave her a 5$ tip !!!!!

I equated her asking me "do you use hand cream?"

to an cosmetician asking me, under a scrutinizing light,

"do you use anti wrinkle cream?"

call me sensitive.

does anyone have days like that? every question seems loaded to you, lol.

I too am grateful for everyone on this forum, I have learned so much and have loved seeing everyone's beautiful roses. I did finally make it to Chamblees and came home with 2 DA, Evelyn and Golden celebration. I am very excited to watch them grow and I decided also on a SDLM and a pink Don Juan along with some cl pinkies. I have grown roses for years but didn't pay attention to names etc....just picked what was pretty to me. Now that I'm older I am interested in learning more about roses and this forum is the place to be for that! Everyone is so knowledgable and has great advice. I will admit I fell victim to the beautiful DA catalog, my husband calls it my rose porn :), but I am glad I was able to learn about other roses and open my mind to other choices. I do hope I love my DA's and am already thinking of other roses I want for next year. Thanks everyone for sharing all your pics and advice!

jjazzy, 50 watts per 5 sf sounds like a great start. Typically, I space 50 watt bulbs approx 30" apart, and pull them 12" to 14" from the wall perimeter. I space 20 or 25 watt bulbs 24" apart and pull them 6" to 10" from the perimeter wall. I tend to like the lights to line up, in a grid pattern, but sometimes I align them diagonally so that each beam spreads hits each other in the corners...the grid pattern only permits the beam spread to touch along the sides, resulting in not as much light flooding the area....diagonally there is a light in every area. Pulling the lights not so far from the walls, creates that scallop effect on the walls, where the light touches the wall....which I like and dont shy away from (although, technically thats not taught or encouraged.) It really gets technical, (which I'm sorry, I dont have my book sitting with me to really get elaborate) becuase it breaks down into wattage and beam spread, etc.... But, generally, those are the rules I follow. I also try to light areas in addition to the recessed in the ceiling...sconces on the wall at approx 65" CL AFF, or at eye level of the client....under lighting wall mounted cabinets with xenon low voltage light bars (by WAC Lighting....love them). I also stagger cabinets (in kitchens) and put up lights on the tops to produce lighting towards the ceiling). I group lights together depending on function and install them on different dimmers....and I put everything on dimmers! This way, the client can control how much light they want at any given time. I love the Maestro dimmer series through Lutron, they are the dimmers that slowly "dim" the lights off, giving you time to exit the room before the lights turn completely off....(not shut off as soon as you hit the button). Also, I've found that if you search online and find professional lighting designers at some of these big firms, if you email them, some are willing to give you a quick response via email...Ive dont that before, and they were quite helpful....but only ask a question or two, after wall, these people are paid by the hour! I do want to mention, that the above is what I follow, as it does contrast to the exact "guidelines" but I find this works for me and my clients as well, and its easy to remember without having to spend hours figuring out formulas, etc. as I am not a lighting designer. Thanks again for your responses

I think maybe I'd come up with one good response, plain but politically correct, and use it every time she starts. Something like: If you're here and not at home or the doctor, we need you to do your share of the work. If you cannot do that, you should go home or to the doctor. And I just would walk away, not give her my audience. She'd learn that I am not the right person to complain to. My MIL is like that, too. However, I only see her a couple times a year and talk on the phone to her only a few times a year. I can tolerate it for a short time. Even when we visit for a few days, I just listen and offer superficial sympathy. She feels the only way to get attention is to be sick. However, as soon as she has anyone's attention for a minute she consumes it with health complaints. She will even go into explicit detail to her grandchildren about her bowel movements. (Nothing brings generations closer. LOL) So people avoid giving her their attention to avoid the health complaints. It's a cycle. When I do talk to her, I try to ask more specific questions that "How are you?" If she's tried any good recipes; been anywhere fun; what she's watching on TV these days. Granted, she can even turn that around to foods she cannot eat anymore; how hard it is to walk or ride in car; and the medical report on CNN. But it doesn't open the door quite so wide as "How are you?" I sort of hold her husband a little bit responsible b/c he does ignore her unless she is sick. But when she is sick, he fawns all over her and tells everyone else to give her a break. She grew up the oldest of 6 kids on a farm, I'm sure she had to be very sick to get much notice.

Computer and 'girl friend' trouble

I'm with salgal and iowagirl2009. In my opinion, this computer should be wiped clean, "low-level" formatted and reloaded. You lost everything on it already so there can't be much on there of importance yet that can't be backed up after a thorough virus/malware check. This doesn't sit right with me. And OK, the computer and relationship issues are separate issues so deal with them separately. But I would have someone competent do a complete drive wipe and start over. My first thought was they could have slipped in a "back door". For peace of mind, that thing would be sanitized. The son's dealing with this so far. If they're friends, they're friends. Have a sit-down and encourage him to be cautious, tell him you're there for him but you're not going to try to run his life. It sounds like that's where he's at anyway. Illegal to have a computer by the window? That's a new one on me! :) Password recovery because someone who worked on your computer wouldn't give you your passwords? LOL Sorry, but nope. That's not rational. They're not you're IT person, they were supposed to clean malware from your system and they weren't able to do that so how should they be given credibility to have such control over your system? Nope. No way. Uh-uh. Not in this lifetime. Yes, the Admin and separate accounts being kept separate is a good way to go, but in all my years of servicing computers, there's NO WAY I'd ever put myself in the position where I'd be the only one with passwords for a client's computer! Forget liability, forget the silly arguments, I *always* would not only give them the passwords, but tell them TO CHANGE them so there can't be an accusation toward me. Plus 5 year later when they call and cry that they can't remember the password, I remind them that they were to have changed it and I didn't have it. In reality, I doubt these people are all that intelligent computer-wise to do the things a person in that position could do. But that doesn't matter, I'd still have it wiped out. Given they couldn't clean some malware, and of course we don't know how serious it was, nor do we even know for sure there was a virus or other malware on there, but with the toold available now, readily available, free and easy to use, they shouldn't have wiped your computer. For security purposes, if you use this computer for anything requiring a password, I'd change all those passwords. Online banking, credit cards, etc, especially! That data is possible to dig out. When I had a system with important data on it that needed service, the first thing I did was back up the entire hard drive completely. That backup of course would be in my posession. Unscrupulous people could, at their liesure look thorugh your data and see what they could find. Am I overly-suspicious? Often, yes, but that's what I got paid to do. And I've done enough forensic data recovery to be amazed at what is on peoples' systems, readily accessible by anyone and the simplistic passwords used by many people. FWIW, my one partner thought she had a foolproof password on her computer. I guessed it in two tries! I'm not encouraging paranoia, just common sense caution. When something doesn't smell right, I don't swallow it. This wouldn't get near my mouth!

Ha! My husband has a problem with being thin skinned with what he calls "stupid questions and comments". When he has a day where he is stuck in meeting for 7 hours, everything anyone says becomes a "stupid comment". I can just imagine what he would have said to her on a bad day. Beside, who has the money to go to the manicurist even when your nails are beautiful? Seems to me that is the point of going, to take your poor hands that work so hard and pamper and beautify them. If hand cream worked that well, manicurists would not have many customers!

This is a spa where I intend to go back and the other girls are all so super nice; I usually call at the last minute and get whoever is available; I'll remember to book in advance with other girls I know. Although I have to say she backed off and was nicer after she realized she was out of line, judging by my reaction.

Sounds like she had a 'tude. I don't tolerate other people's attitude issues well. I'd have called her on it, too. (..and maybe wouldn't have been so kind about it.) I really hate when you're PAYING for a service and people have the gall to get snippy with you. I'm sorry, don't you WANT to make my money??? Ugh.

I prefer to go to different hairstylists every few months or a year because they tend to get into a rut---cutting my hair exactly the same old way every time with little creativity over the long term. At age 52 and having seen dozens of hairstylists, I can't tell you how many times I've heard: "Who cut your hair last? They did a terrible job" and "You're hair's bit dry; you need to buy this, this, and this product." Always a ploy to convince you that whatever you've been doing in the past isn't working and you need to but more product from them. Now, if I could just find someone who can give me the variety I need, I might stick with them. "Whoever cut your hair last was terrible" doesn't work for me...

! Wow.... that 'whoever did such&such last is terrible!' line is entirely unprofessional.

I love my hairstylist. I have been going to her for about eight years now and have had numerous styles. My hair is very fine and thin and most stylists find it difficult to work with. She does a great job and we have fun tweaking the style at almost every cut! I am going in this week and I can't wait to see what we decide to do! I do a bob between the chin and shoulder, it varies usually being shorter in summer and longer in winter, but never past the shoulder. We change the angle leaving it straight across the bottom to angled toward the front. we add and take away layering, only in the bottom 1/3 at the sides and up to the bottom 1/2 in the back, but no layering at the very front because I like to tuck my hair behind my ears, I hate when it gets stuck on my glasses. I sometimes change the color as well, this is more difficult because I have a lot of allergies. But I do love playing with my hairstyle, and it wonderful to find a stylist I can trust to do this with. A couple times a year I just tell her to do whatever she would want to do if it was her hair, you can't do that with someone you don't trust completely.
