Pine Sawfly http://acreage.unl.edu/News/News/PineSawfly%20&%20Wilt.htm Quote from the link: Each year about the middle of May we begin to hear of huge numbers of dark green worms or larvae consuming pine needles in Washington County. Homeowners will look at their pines and find that a large portion of the pine trees needles have somehow disappeared. An insect called the pine sawfly is the culprit and can damage trees in a very short period of time. Fortunately, the sawfly will only eat the old needles. Thus, the new needles that are candling out will not be affected. For that reason, very few trees are actually killed. The larvae of this insect are grayish green with two light stripes and a dark stripe on each side of the body. The legs and head are shiny black. Full grown larvae will be about one inch long. The larvae are gregarious and stay together in a cluster as they feed on the old needles of Scots, Austrian, Ponderosa and Mugo pines. The damage my be aesthetically displeasing, especially in Christmas Tree plantings, and growth of the tree may be stunted. Sawfly larvae are easily killed by most broad spectrum insecticides, insect growth regulator, botanicals, or insecticidal soap or oil. There are also some reports that spraying with a high pressure hose knocking them off the tree is a very effective method of control. The most effective control is achieved when pesticide is applied early in the season when sawflies are young. After the sawflies reach one inch in length, they stop feeding and construct a pupae. Defoliation by this insect pest generally lasts four to five weeks, usually peaking at the end of May. There is only one generation of sawflies per year.

sensitive skin needs to be really careful about such things - some folks are sensitive to abrasion, and do better with exzymatic exfoliation. some folks are chemically sensitive, and some folks are both... the gentlest thing you can use to loosen dead skin cells is plain yogurt and oatmeal (you can run it through the blender dry, or the coffee grinder to make the particles finer) - berries and pineapple are a bit stronger, and contain those 'fruit acids' people talk about...pineapple has enough of it that, raw, it will keep jello from setting. the strongest natural ones are mango and payaya - papain is a powerful 'debriding' enzyme, and is too strong for my face all by itself, I blend it with yogurt - but it does wonders on my elbows! plain asprin is basically saliclic acid and baking soda, and a few drops of water makes one into a tiny little puddle of masque. stronger than that is the shampoo for psoriasis, which can be up to 3%... which is somewhere between the .5% of most face washes, and the 15% of a BHA peel.

Like Oakley, I have very youthful skin for my age and hardly any wrinkles. I've never used an exfoliating machine. Mine, DH feels, is due to never having smoked, drinking lots of water every day (it's easy for me because I love it), always wearing a good (Neutrogena) sunblock outside, using a good but reasonably-priced moisturizer (Neutrogena) morning and night . . . and washing my face every morning with St. Ives Blemish Control Apricot Scrub. I do think that, as Oakley mentioned, a washcloth could give me the same benefit as the scrub, but I love my scrub. DH was actually a pharmacist for 5 years before he went to medical school, so he's been a fountain of good , dependable info for me on the things I use on my face and body. Being in family practice now for over 20 years, he takes care of many skin problems with his patients every week. How handy for me (LOL)! I frequently call him up while I'm out shopping to run ingredients in lotions and makeup by him. The guy is brilliant and so down to earth when it comes to stuff like that. Instead of being impressed by new devices and exotic ingredients, he sees them for what they really are and what they can actually do ~ or not do. When our DD was in high school and having blemish problems, she really wanted to buy an exfoliating machine. DH told her to instead use the same routine as I do. He's had many of his patients create more skin issues than they solve with them and feels St. Ives Blemish Control Scrubbing grains work better. Other brands may work equally well, but many add unnecessary ingredients just to inflate the price. Anyhoo, that's what I use and why. Lynn
