I've never done this before...

But I created a blog. I know we aren't supposed to put links here to competing sites ~ and my blog is NOT intended to complete with this place. It's just a little more, ummmmmm, shall we say - open minded?

Oh! My! Gosh! Toolbelt and Subk3, pictures like yours are what inspired me to try this companion planting! Christopher and camps, your point about rose selection is well taken. Super Jane is a hybrid musk, although a modern one. Clematis versicolor blooms (according to Plant Delights) in April-June and then again in Sept. and October. I think that they will bloom together. I hope. That's why I asked for others' experiences. Super Jane doesn't have a lot of thorns and I chose her for that reason. I don't want to deal with yet another rose that fights back when I prune. BTW, Christopher, I so wish I could grow albas. Maybe someday... Thanks for your spacing and timing suggestions, kidhorn and dublinbay. When I plant my rose, I'll make a point of having my clematis ready to go in, too. I'm glad that they can be planted that close together. It will make it easier to find the best spot for both. Mad_gallica, that is disappointing. Deer are always a factor here since I live on the edge of a woods. I know that when deer here are hungry the way they have been this winter, they'll eat whatever they can find. This year, for example, they ate 3/4 of the leaves and buds off my camellia, something they've never bothered in the past. I may need to rethink the location if I decide to go through with this. The pruning thing makes a lot of sense. I don't know where I read it and will have to go back and check, but I thought that the little clematis I'm considering died back quite a bit and could be cut back completely in late winter. I hope that's right. If not, I'll look for one that can. Subk3, you make a very good point about checking to see if Super Jane and clematis versicolor can handle the same growing conditions. Super Jane seems to be a tough girl to survive her setbacks but I haven't had her long enough to draw any conclusions. I live on the edge of a dry woods on top of a small hill that's on top of a larger hill. Keeping plants moist enough is a battle for me. I would like to plant Super Jane on a trellis on the side of a small building that faces east/southeast. She will get morning sun and dappled shade/light shade the rest of the day. Our soil is horrible here- dry clay and rocks- so I amend it quite a bit with compost and mulch. It sounded like the clematis could handle regular garden conditions so I thought that the extra watering and soil amendments for the rose wouldn't hurt the clematis. This clematis is supposed to be less prolific than other natives and play well with others so I thought that it might be a good one for me to try. This is coming from the nurseries that have it for sale, though. Thanks, everyone, for taking the time to respond.

Thanks Deanna and Zabby. Had to butcher the little crippled one yesterday. She was going downhill fast. I'm going to feed her to the dogs, she wasn't looking to good but the meat looks fine and smells fine. It went ok and didn't take long at all. I just set up in my future lasagna garden bed so that I could cover any mess with browns and ran the hose over anything real quick to rinse, used sharp knives and skinned her. I'm letting the others go at least two or three more weeks, unless they dont look good. My husband even offered to make a cone for me! I think his warming to the idea and won't have as much problem as he originally thought he was going to have. I won't be repeating this experiment here in Urban AZ, but I wouldn't mind doing it when we move to the country in a couple of years. I've always raised my own beef and purchased FHA pigs for my meat so this would be a natural extension. Especially since I've had poultry of all kinds for probably twenty years. I've had all sorts of game birds, peacocks, guineas and laying hens, plus bantams. BTW, my new batch of the right chicks came this week. They sent a full 28 to replace 17, a mix of 5 breeds and they are just the cutest. A bunch of smaller breeds that should be very heat tolerant, although possibly flighty. Hopefully won't be flying all over the neighborhood! I got Egyptian Fayoumis, buttercups, golden penciled hamburgs, silver leghorns and some aracaunas. Plus, the old English bantams that I already have from the first order. (I missed my little, cocky old English bantam Roos!)

If it helps, traditionally, the stocks are struck in the field in summer to fall of one year, then budded the following summer. I have rooted stocks over winter and budded them a few months after they have been potted and show vigorous growth. I have also budded scions to stocks which were several years old and previously unused. I have also budded scions to seedlings, both those raised the year they were budded as well as many which were several years old. The only real "requirements" are the stock must be at least as thick as the wood from which the scion is removed, or thicker; and the stock must be in vigorous growth, showing a lot of new growth being pushed. That alerts you that there is good sap flow, permitting the bark to lift more easily and to maintain the scion with sufficient sap flow until the two pieces knit together when the stock will support it as it does any of its own growth. If your goal is to produce a "commercial" budded plant, you probably only want one or two scions per stock, budded on opposite sides from the other. If you're practicing budding and as long as the scions take, the number of scions inserted in the stock is only limited by how much room you need to bud them to the stock. I've successfully inserted a dozen scions in a long whip with them all taking. The advice above is also good. You don't want to destroy the stock and doom any potentially successful scions above the mangled section. If your goal is to establish a rose in your collection, keeping several long, rooted whips around, ready for budding, can help. I had budded Souv. de Therese Levet to a seedling, then accidentally ripped the more vigorous growth from the stock. The remaining growth and seedling died, but I was able to insert seven buds from that separated growth into a long whip of a seedling, with all seven succeeding. If you're going to the Heirloom Expo, Jeri has an own root, virus indexed IXL and a virus indexed De la Grifferaie she picked up from me yesterday on her way up. Both root easily and have been treated and tested by UC Davis to insure they aren't infected with RMV. Both would make excellent stock mother plants to root succeeding generations of stocks from, and both root fairly easily. Both, like Pink Clouds, can either be "T" or chip budded. Chip budding is the easiest and fastest method for home use. As long as the scion material is in good shape, I average nearly 100% take with chip budding. Good luck!

I just tried to log on and AmyH is already taken. Can't have a space. Are you all y'all ya'll trying to tell me something? I could always get creative and make up a user name that isn't my actual name...I could be tallrichyoungstunningswimsuitmodel. What do you think? Would you still recognize me even with the new name?

I'm in as amyh2. It displays as amyh though. Scary to think that there are 2 of me out there. That would help out a lot, though, since I have quite a bit to do.

Actually this is almost too boring to mention, but when I got my first car I wanted vanity plates. Amy was taken as well as AmyC (maiden name) and I was no more creative then. Guess what I put on my license plate? Drum roll.... AMYAMY
I was creative for DH though. He had a little Toyota MR2. His plates said IMHEDAU. Say it really slow. Get it?

Allison: Yes, Space Camp was one of the best things that ever happened to me. I went through all of the levels and went to Soviet Space Camp as well. I became a counselor and then eneded up as the (now former) director of Space Camp's children's nanny for five great years.
