Where can I find red wine for a gift in a HUGE bottle!!

I've seen these enormous bottles of red wine sitting on shelves at restaurants. I was thinking....what a great gift! I hate giving people knick-knacks and stuff that will clutter their houses. Of course, they may never drink it but that's their choice!

I certainly would want to try to buy a decent tasting wine (I don't drink wine). Any suggestions where I can get one and what type & brand I might want to look for. Size-wise.....would a double magnum be impressive to look at?

I don't know what you mean by enormous....but you can buy a 1750 ML bottle.....about 1/2 a gallon or a magnum of Champagne.....which is larger....or a Jeraboam at some liquor stores.
Your best bet is to go to an upscale liquor store.

If you have a Total Wine by you, they carry some (but limited selection). I second the suggestion of going to an upscale store that can order from the winery for you. I was out in CA this summer and many of the distilleries said that they package commerative large bottle for celebrations (or showing off!)

I got most of mine from the recycle man...but now he has moved up in the company, lol. He just gave them to me and I usually rewarded him with apples or grapes and water. I also get some from GW. But sometimes they charge so much that I had just as soon pay $1.99 and get the bottled mineral bubbly water at places like World Market. At least I enjoy drinking it. That is the price of the smaller one and they do have a bigger one. But you can get the empty wine bottles pretty inexpensive online. Just search wine making supplies.

Thank you again for all the advice and ideas! That's why I love GW! CEFreeman: I know that is a common mistake- I'ld like to think that most folks are now aware that above the fridge is the last place you should put your wine. But then again, what about olive oil next to the stove? That's the most convenient place to keep it, and where most folks store it, but exposing it to the heat is also bad for the olive oil. I am keeping my design the way it is, although we tweaked the cabinet so the bottom doors line up with the glass doors above. I've decided that the "crate" wine storage is fine for us- and I like the way it breaks up the cabinetry. No wine drawers available through Medallion, but I'm fine with it.

Nellie: I believe you can get what's called a diamond bit or a glass bit for a drill. I did the same thing you're talking about. Since I don't have a drill or know anyone that has the glass bit, I just stuffed the lights in the top and put the cork in. The cord can be covered up by ivy/grapes or whatever you'd like. Even if you drilled a hole in the bottom, you'd still see the cord going to the wall. So I wouldn't worry about it. I have more pics of my bottles on the projects page on my website. LOL! Chloebud, you remind me. My people are split between wine people and water people. When wine people bring a bottle to an occasion with several different botlles open, I'll usually have them put it on the table for all to share. I rarely know anything about this new thing, but wine people can usually be trusted to bring something some will like. this once, however, I wasn't seated near such a bottle, which was about three quarters gone when I got some. It was SWILL. Tannic, tes, but also acidic, sour, nasty...maybe a bit uric? Just awful. I was so embarrassed! and worried that so much was gone and my guests would be thinking I'd lost my mind. Until I found out that one of the ”plus” people of one of my guests had accounted for most of the bottle, with the guy who brought it on the rest. The former lady apparently is more into drinking than wine. ;)

A coworker scoped out Total Wine for me.... he looked at champagne in Magnum and double-Magnum sizes. You can get decent champagne in the double-magnum size for 180. I can't decide what to get my Dad for xmas.... he has everything ....he doesn't have a really cool looking bottle of wine. My fear is that I'll get some wine he doesn't like. I'll have goen for quantity not the quality.

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to check it out myself in the red wines....

Well.....if you get him a bottle in the double magnum size he better plan to throw a party.....because once it's opened it won't keep more than 5 or 6 hours.

What Linda C said...If you get him a magnum or larger bottle of red wine, most of it is going to end up going down the sink's drain, unless he's having a huge party with loads of red wine drinkers.

How about just getting him a really great and unique bottle of wine?
