Bailey's Marvel was almost certainly a Haden seedling.....this was confirmed to me by the people who own the original tree. It was planted in an orchard that is almost entirely Haden trees, at a time when Haden was really one of the only 'superior' cultivars available commercially. The 'Bombay' cross is more debatable....that was what the USDA people found when they did that pedigree analysis 6 years ago. I've found a lot of different opinions on that. Dr. Ray Schnell has a lot of confidence in it and is defensive about it, but Richard Campbell (whose name is on the report) distanced himself from it when I asked him about it last year. I myself have found some discrepancies in the study. Bombay is one of the older cultivars in Florida though (brought from Jamaica in the early 20th century I think), so its possible the Bailey brothers had a Bombay tree somewhere on the property. Harry, while Bailey's Marvel doesn't seem to have the characteristics of either supposed-parent, that's not too unusual for mangoes......Valencia Pride is a Haden seedling too, but you'd never guess it based on its characteristics. Edward is a Haden seedling also but I shudder to compare Haden to it in anything.

How much space are you working with? How many do you already have of Stained glass, Olive Bailey Langdon and the Mahogany Ajuga? Off the cuff, just imagining things and that you have enough space, I am thinking that a large blue taller upright vase shaped hosta (Blue Hawaii or similar) centered somewhere between the Stained Glass and Olive Bailey Langdon could be a good accent... or a medium blue ones with different leaf characteristics (puckered and rippled/ wavy like Rock and Roll, Love Pat, Blueberry Muffin, Jet Stream, Halcyon)... or a few smaller blue hostas around the forefront of the garden bed (Camelot or Pewterware). I am mentioning "blues" or dark blue/greens to play off the darker colors of both the hostas you already have. ... or you can edge the bed with smaller Mighty Mouse ears to add a kick of color and shape (but I am wondering if the would the Ajuga would drown out the smaller hostas?). Just my 2 cents. :)

so i remember reading Baileys was a bit more hardy than other mango. i had about 10 seedlings 2yrs and 3 larger plants about 4 to 5 yrs old. one was fruiting. this past January we had 1 night that hit 26F... i lost almost all of them (as well as black sapote, jackfruit, eggfruit...) the larger plants are coming back from the trunk or roots, but its still depressing. so i bought a Baileys and planted it like 3ft from my house on the South face. hoping i get 2 or 3 winters in a row that are mild... normal winters here we might get 1 or 2 nights right around 30 to 32F. im thinking in 3 yrs this plant should be strong enough to handle anything given the fact that its probably 3 degrees warmer in this spot. i will probably plant a ground cover 2ft tall or so near it as well.

Francesco,Not as long as we don't fall below 32f or 0C. We did about 3 years ago,and I put a plastic sheet over it and a spotlight under it for night warming. This year we were at 32f for a morning low,and I never covered it at all. Some top leaves were singed. No damage to growing tips. After the first two winters,Mangoes hardiness goes way up. Even with record rains this winter it did fine. Pwr. The Fremont Mango is on Bruce Street. If people use Google streets then they can see that tree was only a 3' stick- not a single side branch in 2011. By 2016,it had market sized fruit and was walkunderable! Its getting all day sun,and not a single other plant is near it to offer root competition. Still,that's very fast growth. Maybe they used lawn fertilizers? I'm watering and always fertilizing mine at about the same age. It has a long ways to go to be a small tree.
