Baileys Marvel flowering below graft...
Comments (10)My tree was not a double graft. Flowering from the rootstock on young trees is an infrequent occurrence, but it does happen. Har M explained that it happens on about 1 in every 1,000 to 2,000 trees in the case of Julie, sometimes even occurring on 6 month old trees. In my case the stress cased by extra fert probably bumped it into the 1 in 1,000 group. You should read some of Laymond Hardy's writings. Many believe him to be on the 'eccentric' side (for lack of a better word). But his 'hormone' experiments are a bit interesting. He would do funny things like put mature budwood in a blender and then inject the solution into the trunk of a juvenile citrus seedling to induce early blooming. Comments (3)Its potted. Just a tall variety that refuses to branch horizontal. I tried last year tip pruning..nada. It sent out more vertical shoots. Right now its in a great spot for warm, but the clay soil needs to be amended big time-for a mango- or a raised bed to add winter soil warmth and drainage...this is where that Florida and soucal/Arizona sandy soil really has a huge advantage. It seems to have set heavily-I'm used to that one in a hundred fruit set that Avocado's have here, but of course the grow into huge tree's with more than enough fruit. If I can get two good growth flushs..I should get fruit. Also M.D.,this is as early as they come for the bay area..it was forming flower buds in Jan. If it does what my Manila did..ripe fruit by the end of June-Sept. Let's just see......See MoreThat hardy Bailey's Mango laughing at 34f cold.
Comments (14)Hi Mango_Kush and others: Yes, absolutely. Frozen ground would most likely kill a mango tree for sure. However, where I live, the ground never freezes, or even close to it. The coldest ground temperature IâÂÂve ever measured in my yard was last year and that was 40.5F at about four inches from the surface. However, my potted mango tree has had ground temperature readings of 35F and has not shown any signs of root problems. The ground here in Jacksonville stays around 55F average in January, during a cold year. Well, at least in my area of town. Other plants, my Barbados cherry, tamarind, and âÂÂCuban oreganoâ do not like ground temperatures to drop even into the 50âÂÂs. I can imagine that 35F in the ground for even a couple of nights would probably kill them⦠I use to have a potted seedling Mamey Sapote and it did not seem to like cold feet either. I got rid of it though, because I got a grafted Magaña, it is currently planted in ground and seems to do very well....See MoreUPDATE Finally finished Nursery. Before & After Pics (pic heavy)
Comments (47)Hi again, Thanks so much for the measurements! I think we can work something like that in our smaller bedroom and still have enough floor for his bed.... I will have to measure tomorrow when I don't risk making noise near the bedrooms (our sons sleep with their door open). He still wants to sleep with his brother, but they have made a few comments about having their own rooms soon. We can relocate the computer and set up the room as originally intended for him. Thanks again!...See Morestanofh 10a Hayward,Ca S.F. bay area
