Everything is so ugly. Everything is so boring. This is exactly what I was thinking after we spent a couple of hours walking around a big mall, only because it was freezing but I wanted to walk. It might not have pushed me over the edge as much as it did, had I not also been looking at thousands of cabinet knobs and faucets and hinges and every other damn thing you can put in a kitchen. I know you're talking about not being able to find specific things. I have that problem, too. The 1920s faucets that were still almost universal in utility sinks when I was a kid are now special order high priced items. But I also think things in general look repulsive. Crate & Barrel seems to have bet its entire product line on the 587th revival of the 1970s we've had to endure over the past two decades. In each object in the store, ugly fights with boring to see which will emerge as dominant. There is not one single dinner service that you could call elegant without laughing, and more than a few you could lose your lunch on as soon as you ate it. I know some here swear by PB but it is worse than ever, everything dull as death and clunky as an elephant's foot. Things that might've been somewhat interesting when they were novel ten years ago, like "vintage" faucets, have been overdone and dumbed down to idiocy. There never was a real vintage faucet that had those big knobs on top with sheep hook spouts, and all those pull downs look like something you'd be embarrassed to touch in polite company. I guess it's cheaper to shave all the fine edges off everything than to produce items with the slightest character or delicacy, whether they are traditional or modern. The sad part is no one even seems to notice. Consumers are eager to show they will be no trouble to their Chinese manufacturers.

Buying House 1 hour from city where I work - is that a good idea ?
Q

There are a lot of factors that can play into whether or not it is a good idea and those factors can change over time. Right now, the commute is only an hour. If the area grows/increases in population, that amount of time could increase a little or a lot. How one feels also depends on if that hour is spent actually driving or just sitting in traffic most of the time. My DH does commute. We have a home on acreage that we enjoy and it is in a good location between 2 cities that have government work (which is who his employer is). A house like ours closer to Santa Fe would be double the price (on a city lot), perhaps triple with acreage. I work at home so I am close to the kids needs for school and socializing. I think it is important to have one parent close to the kids. There are times when the commute does get to him but when he hand the opportunity to apply for a job with a pay raise and shorter commute, he chose not to. There are downsides. He cannot invite his co-workers over for dinner and if we are invited to something, it takes a considerable amount of time. We could sell and buy something closer, but that would be a major disruption to the kids and our life outside of work is here. When the kids move out, he will only be about 4 years away from retirement so our lives will have changed again. If you do buy a house that far out, like most house purchases, it is best to have enough equity in it that if you decide to sell, for whatever reason (in this case shortening your commute), you can afford to do so.

Haha, great comment, finallyhome. I find myself unexpectedly in a country I don't recognize. Too many people who think they are patriots but who are really a great risk to the continuation of our democracy. Such a profusion of unthinking droids who can do little more than blindly believe and repeat the garbage propaganda they hear on Fox News and from the White House. They're brainwashed. It's why I said I don't think our laws will ever be fixed. It's discouraging to hear nonsense like this and more than a little sad. drewsmaga, have you wondered why democratically elected leaders of other countries in the world have kept their distance from Trump? The only people who will meet with him is other dictators (as he aspires to be himself with trying to ignore the rule of law). Putin of Russia, Kim of N. Korea, and the guy from China. The others all think he's a clown and want nothing to do with him and most have said so publicly. Boris Johnson, the new PM of the UK, and a problem package himself, was described by Trump as "Good man. He’s tough and he’s smart. ". What Johnson said about Trump not too long ago was " I think he's betraying a quite stupefying ignorance that makes him, frankly, unfit to hold the office of president of the United States, " This is a widely held opinion of him abroad and yes, it matters.

: ) gotta agree with Lafitte's in New ORleans- the only bar to actually get any money out of me last time I was down there.

don't know if the Khyber Pass is still open in Philly, but it used to be the ONLY place to get a brew that wasn't mass-produced.

and gotta plug the friday tastings at the brooklyn brewery plant in brooklyn... the only beer I've had two of in years.
