Hair Texture Question

Ok, for the last few months by hair has been way different than usual. I just can't figure what is wrong with it.

It appears overly dry and damaged and very dull but I have no split ends whatsoever and I've done olive oil and honey treatments which seem to actually appear to make my hair even duller. Or at least, they don't help in the least bit.

I use Dove shampoo and conditioner.. sometimes I use Infusium or the conditioning treatment that comes with the hair color (Nice N Easy) I use. That conditioner "used" to make my hair shiny but now... nothing.

I am beginning to wonder if my hair isn't really damaged but maybe something else is going on. It is strong, and the strands seem thick, but they are hard, and again, no split ends but my hair "looks" very dull and dry to me.

What should I try? What happened to my beautiful hair? Could I have conditioned it too much or left the color on my hair too long?

Ideas? Suggestions? Thanks.

I don't know how old you are, but I have found the older I get the poorer the condition of my hair is.

I would suggest going to a Salon and asking their advice for a shampoo and conditioner.I realize the products they sell are more expensive but if your hair is dry or damaged I think it would be worth a try.I have a Biolage Conditioning Balm that I am using now.

LOL. I had to recheck to see if I wrote your post. I, too, had a short hair style for many years. As we all do from time to time, I decided...for the umpteenth time...to let it grow. This time, however, I periodically went to a modestly priced salon and had it shaped. It made quite a difference and I persisted in letting it grow. Eventually I had to keep removing the hair from my mouth, etc. just as you've mentioned. I had the stylist cut it shorter, but not short like I used to wear it. I like this shorter Ã¢ÂÂlongÃ¢ÂÂ style much better. It looks much perkier - definitely needed at my age - than having long strands curling under my chin. I also found I preferred my hair after I'd slept on it - it isn't as fly away on the sides. Did a little research on hair products and found that if I purchased those which have hydrating in their name, and leave the conditioner on for one minute before gently rinsing, the fly aways were gone. I think a low ponytail on the back of the neck with a pretty bow or similar is attractive. But that's means the face is really front and center, perhaps not as desirable as we age. Since you mention not wanting to wear yours in a pony tail, maybe you need to consider a trim to get some "perk" back.. I recall a funny essay Erma Bombeck wrote many years ago about her quest to grow long hair. I tried to find it online but wasn't successful. You and I, and probably many others, could relate. Our lhasa-poodle mix had hairy ears, and our vet showed us the same as yours did, to hand-pull the hair. You're doing this the right way, a little at a time, and touching ears on other days. It's best for all involved to do a little at a time rather than a lot when it becomes a problem. It's a lot less painful to pull a few than a lot, and if your dog ever gets inflamed/infected ears, it'll be terribly painful to pull a lot of hair. Prevention is the name of the game here. DH would pull her hair while watching tv, just a couple quick tugs then a treat or some love/attention. She was generally good about it, as she got elderly it wasn't as easy. We also used forceps/clamps occasionally, it was easy to set the clamp on some hair, give it a twist and yank. It hurt her more though, as we usually pulled more at once that way. You can also get deeper in the canal with forceps (gotta be very careful you can also pinch the tender flesh in the ear, don't ask why I know this). It's a good habit to get in, hairy ears can have problems.

I was at Ulta last week, not my favorite place to shop, looking something for my hair. I have color treated, fine hair but lots of it. I never use conditioner, a detangler or even shampoo with a conditioner. I stay away from any extra products, they make my hair flat and feel dirty the next day. I asked one of the hairdresser for a suggestion and she recommended Beach Envy volumizer by Redken. it was pricey but she said I could come in and swap it out if I didn't like it. I will say it is the best thing I have ever tried on my hair! Its almost like a gel that you apply after shampooing, work through and then rinse out. My hair is full, the slight curl, I wear it in a longish bob, stays in for at least 3 days and it does not feel dirty, it actually feels good. I like my hair to look healthy and have movement (says my hairdresser) and it does. BTW the gal from Ulta said if I didn't like that product that Fashion waves 07 that lukki suggested was very good too, she actually didn't know which one to recommend to me. I finally have a product that works for me!!! It will probably be discontinued tomorrow LOL.

Coincidentally, when I got my hair cut just a couple weeks ago the beautitian did put some Biolage balm stuff in - but I didn't notice a difference - should I have with just one use?

I did do a vinegar rinse and am trying a new shampoo (someone advised switching shampoos from time to time helps hair). Between the vinegar rinse and the new shampoo, my hair has gotten slightly better.

My diet is really, good, plus I sometimes do a multi. vitamin with Biotin which is supposed to be good for your hair. If anything, I may be getting too much good stuff! But thanks for the diet idea.

I think it may have a lot to do with my age and hormones or something. It just seemed to change over night. I did use a slightly different hair color this time around... maybe I'll go back to the old one.

Are you using a permenant color? And if so do you touch up the roots or color your whole head each time? If you color your whole head each time instead of following the instructions for root touch ups then the ends of the hair can absorb too much color. Some permanant colors are very flat and don't reflect the light well, this could be the problem since you tried a new color. I always use a semi or demi permenant color because the grays come out lighter and look like highlights.

Is you hair straight or curly. Naturally curly website has some great ideas for hair care even if your hair is not curly, just wavy.

As for salon products--never been convinced the price is worth it. Compare ingredients etc. and not much difference. I've noticed that when something is labeled as 'natural' it tends to have more stuff in it that are irritants (essential oils). Also check out cosmeticcop.com for Paula Begoun's research. Her books are worth a read from the library.
