Expensive Appliances: Dissapointed in workmanship/quality control
Comments (5)This is interesting from a reliability point of view. It sounds like all the companies you've dealt with have replaced defective parts w/o any argument. That reflects a business decision on their part. It is expensive to test every item that comes out of a manufacturing facility, and some companies are going to choose a path where they do random sampling (at some frequency depending on their known failure rate) and send out most of their product without doing any acceptance testing. Other companies are going to test each and every item. I think I heard that Bosch does this with their dishwashers. There's a reliability term called "infant mortality." If you test every item you'll cover almost all the infant mortality issues. What's left is the small likelihood that a tested item has some manufacturing defect that will fail over a longer period of time. If you do lot sample testing, you will not cover infant mortality. In that case you have to be prepared to address a certain number of failures early in the life of the product. I'm glad the companies you've dealt with have responded appropriately. I know it's a hassle to deal with stuff like that. It's hard to know what the business owners think about their customer's emotional response to a situation like this. But maybe you wouldn't have bought those items at all if the price had reflected a different quality control approach....See MoreDifference between cheap and expensive toilets?
Comments (12)In my opinion, in some cases you are paying more to cover the extensive advertising for the brand. In others you are paying more for the style and look of the fixtures and matching other fixtures in the bathroom. In still other cases you are paying for engineering to design the complicated mechanism that provides a powerful flush. And in some cases you are paying for the quality control which some cheaper manufacturers seem to offload onto the consumers. As with many things, paying more doesn't guarantee a better functioning product. There are some cheaper models that work well, and some that provide endless problems. But the same can be said for more expensive models. There are sites that review the functioning of specific brands and models, which are useful in guiding your decisions....See MoreDifference in quality between zinc and brass hardware?
Comments (4)Brass is a bit harder than zinc. It looks like the brass handle in the pic has been electroplated with a zinc or tin coating. Either that or it is an unusual brass with a high very high proportion of zinc in it. Anyway - hard to tell what the quality is from the pictures. I would hazard a guess that the brass unit is heavier. They have photographed the zinc piece in a manner that makes it impossible to ascertain the thicknes of the metal - probably not something that was a chance occurrence. Something to think about - if the brass handle has been plated, the coating could wear away eventually exposing the yellowy brass underneath. I think they both look nice. Perhaps you could order one of each to compare....See MoreX-Back Dining Chairs - quality differences between brands?
Comments (10)Something I learned- Wayfair's portfolio of brands includes Joss & Main, Birch Lane and All Modern. However, the same item may be called by a different name & the price may be different. I always check the prices. Here's an example: $619- https://www.jossandmain.com/furniture/pdp/daisi-60-tv-stand-mtna1928.html?piid=22568511 $549- https://www.wayfair.com/furniture/hd0/daisi-60-tv-stand-l6-k~mtna1928.html?refid=GX103455957163-MTNA1928_22568514&device=c&ptid=353254267655&network=g&targetid=pla-353254267655&channel=GooglePLA&PiID%5B0%5D=22568514&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI1tysguCz3QIVmI7ICh0qwwkOEAQYASABEgJssvD_BwE&piid=22568511...See Moreant3eye
