A Print of an Oil Painting, Valuable??

Hello,

I am new to the forum and I cannot seem to an answer anywhere on the web about this. I have found a print that is framed in a wood frame about 28 x 40 inches. It is called Autumn Lace and is done by Carl Wuermer. There is also an gold colored metal plate with his name attached to the wood.Seeing that is a print or copy of an oil painting, is there any value to it? His oil paintings go quite high at auction. The highest being 17,000+. Or do I just have another picture for my wall. Thanks for any help. Carolej

You have another picture for your wall....or perhaps a frame for another picture.
You havea reproduction of an oil painting...it has worth as a decorative itembut not as "art" in the sense that is a one of a kind.
Enjoy it...it's value lies in the framing and the quality of the print.

That depends. Several local artists allow a limited number of prints to be made of their original water and oils. They are numbered and signed and are collectible and bring fairly stiff prices. We had a painting commissioned by one of them, but I have bought her work as well as reproductions. Not worth a mint, but several hundred a piece and climbing.

Hi fori, That's a charming little painting. The varnish has yellowed. To really get the colors back, you would need to remove it and revarnish. Since you're losing paint in the center, I'd be loath to try this myself. OTOH, painting restoration can be kind of pricey. A restorer would take off the old varnish, stabilize the areas of loss with adhesive, inpaint, and revarnish. The painting would look great. But depending on where you live, it could cost more than the painting is worth. It looks like oil on board to me, too. You might be safe with a water-dampened cotton ball or soft cloth in the areas with no cracking, just to see if you can get the surface dirt off. As for the frame, I like it, but I think it belongs to a later period. Still, if it were mine, I'd be more inclined to spend a couple of hundred on restoration than on a new frame.

Go to a local gallery that specializes in local artists, and ask for their advice. A co-op gallery is ideal, if you have one, because they are often staffed by the members themselves, and they are always good sources of good but not too pricey frames for their own work. You can look on line...if you do, remember to look at the depth of the rabbet, which tells you if the frame can hold the depth of your stretched canvas. I happen to like the "Plein Air" series from PictureFrames.com (link below), but the rabbet is too shallow for some canvases. And do remember that good frames make a huge difference...get the best thing you can possibly afford. You don't want to spoil a $500 dress with $30 shoes! Thank you teeda_2006 ! Funny story... My daughter's boyfriend has recently bought a house. The young couple are talking about how they will furnish and decorate, so I mentioned that the Goodwill Store would be a great place to start. My daughter looked at me like I was crazy and said "EWWWWW, I'm not going to decorate with someone else's stuff!" Today, I showed her this thread and she was really impressed with what you did. I think she was even more impressed with the $2 price tag and is changing her tune to shopping at Goodwill. I also think that my DD will become a regular on this board in the next few months - through me. :) I just love the way your "painting" looks on that red wall.

Anyone with large antique flower oil painting in Living room?

Not sure what you mean by antique flower but I have this large oil painting in my dining room. I love it and dont really care whether it is in style or not. I accessorize with reds, greens and golds but also have some silver. The frame is a dark charcoal color with silver lining.

I agree with calliope that it 'might' have more than a couple bucks value. This artist's work is popular in my area & his unframed prints run several hundred dollars. His earliest works, no longer available from the artist, are appreciating.

So, I guess it 'depends'.

Hello,
Thank you for all the feedback. With a loupe I did find a "C" (copywright) and the following Heritage USA, 1958. I would guess this is who did the copying. However, if I google Heritage USA I get a closed up theme part. So probably that company is out of business. So I guess today maybe I will hang on a bare spot, possibly right over the computer to remind me of $25.00 spent on another frame!! Or possibly it go out at the next yard sale. Not worth putting on ebay as it would cost more to ship the frame carefully than the price I could get for the print. But I so appreciate the help. It reinforces what I was already fearing.

Wuermer was an American impressionist...early 20th century...sometimes lumped with other artists of the Hudson River School.
The artists you speak of that allow limited edition photographic reproductions of their paintings will be unlikely to find their work in fine galleries. I am thinking of artists like Thomas Kincaid and Meynard Reese and perhaps other "wild life" artists.
What carolj has is a fine art print worth about what a print of Gainsborough's Pinky would be worth....certainly worth the $25 she paid for it for the frame alone....if she can pry off thatmetal plate!
