Oil Painting Needs Cleaning
Comments (5)Unless it's been in the kitchen or hanging over a smoldering candle or by a camp fire I can't imagine that it needs cleaning. I hope you gently dust it regularly. And, if you really think it's dirty....dip a cotton ball in a solution of gentle dish soap like Ivory....wring it out very well and just dab at the painting. If you are getting off dirt....continue....but in today's houses which are not heated by wood stove and lit by candles and kerosene I sure can't think it would need any sort of professional cleaning. Comments (11)Usually, I just wipe mine down with a slightly damp paper towel unless I've spilled raw meat or eggs or something in which case I use a little Clorox Anywhere. I always make sure to go over it with a dry towel after cleaning it. My finish is pure tung oil, which seems to be quite the work horse. The other night, I marinated some chicken with the dark thick soy sauce in the marinade and accidentally splashed a few drops on the butcher block. I didn't notice until cleanup time after dinner and I just knew there would be a brown spot since it had been sitting for so long. Nope, nothing, nada - wiped right up with a damp paper towel. I've heard tung oil finishes are supposed to be redone every year or two, but it has been 5 months and nothing phases this countertop. It's my granite that I can't get the oil spots out of!...See MoreHow would you clean dry sap off Trex?
Comments (17)The person who said to live with it is exactly correct. We have a 680-sqft composite deck and we purposely built it around a 40-ft Norway pine. We were managing sap removal fairly well until the summer of 2021 when pretty much the entire deck got covered, and I mean covered, in sap. Couldn't find even 1 square foot without sap on it. Never seen anything like it. Even our Hannamint furniture took a beating. So we cut the tree down a few weeks ago. We have tried Goo Gone, soapy water, power washing, composite deck cleaner, scrubbing, rubbing, scraping. With the density of the droplets from 2021 we are ending up smearing the sap so instead of a million little white sap stains, now the sap is essentially pressed into the fine groves in the deck mold...so a broader white spot appears. So, it's either live with the small white spots or live with the remnants of the rubbing. Neither is ideal. We are simply going to give it a washing with the Krud Cutter deck and fencc cleaner to remove the surface stickiness and live with a white spotted deck. That is, until I call to have someone come and rplace 100% of the boards. That's the only way to get a totally sap free deck for us, is to replace it all....See MoreHow to clean tung oil-finished cabinets
Comments (4)First off, Minwax Tung Oil Finish is a varnish thinned for wiping and some linseed oil. There is no tung oil in it, none, zero, zip, nada, just varnish, linseed oil, and thinner. Tung Oil Finish For simple cleaning, I use Dawn in water, less Dawn than what you would use for a sink full of dishes. It is an excellent degreaser. If you want to (and I rarely find it necessary), you can then wipe down with naphtha or mineral spirits. The varnish and oil by now has polymerized and will NOT be stripped by mineral spirits. Its curing is non-reversible. For heavy cleaning of accumulated grease, smoke, and fingerprints, I use Kitchen Cabinet wipes (See below). In a kitchen full of cabinets, usually only the most-used two or three cabinets need this treatment. You might then follow up with a good emulsion furniture polish such as Oz or Guardsman. NOT Pledge. Pledge will ruin any ability to freshen up with any type of finish later. Here is a link that might be useful: Cabinet wipes...See Morelindac
