Eyeglasses frame style

I am in my late 50s and need to get new glasses. I would like something classic that won't look dated in a few years since I tend to keep my glasses for a while. Right now I have the typical gold oval wire rims. I am thinking about those in a pinkish tint. I'm also considering frames with a rectangular shape. I have a roundish face with fair skin and hair and use progressive lenses. Thoughts?

The best and, really, only way to choose frames is to try all of them on. You might like a certain shape on a friend but it doesn't look good on you. You need to take time at the eyeglass store and try on different styles.

As for the rose-tint, that is really dating yourself. If you want tinted glasses I would go for the Transitions lenses, they make the glasses into sunglasses when you are in the sun. I would stay away from tinted glasses otherwise.

Thanks for your response. I would not get pink tinted lenses; rather I'm talking about the metal frame color having a bluish pink tint to it since I have light cool colored skin.

I found some great videos on you tube about choosing eyeglasses. The site is monkeysee dot com. The woman has a model in which she puts on various styles, colors, etc and shows what works and why. Other sites have words or someone explaining ideas but no models.

The prevailing wisdom on most sites states that if you have a round face, you should have angular frames and vice versa. She shows through accessories and glasses why that is not so. I found her videos helpful and perhaps others would too.

I have never even had a second pair of glasses. After going through 4 months of cataract removal and healing I treated my self to an extra pair, my reg glass frames are like my old one and I bought small red plastic for fun and I love them. I may even buy a purple pair when I go back for a check up. Lots of fun.

The good news: the small boutique eyeglass place was happy to make a temporary fix to my glasses (where the mall places were unwilling!). This bought me some time.. the bad news: I need the extra time because the frames Ichose aren't going to work for me. They don't fit on my narrow bridge well.. which makes them sit very low on my face. They are already a very large frame and they just didnt look right. Also, I intentionally wore colors other than black when I tried them on this time because I was wearing all black when I previously tried them on. I was not as enamored with black when I wasn't wearing it. I am somewhat back at square one. I did find two frames I liked on but both had something working against it. Tiffany glasses really seemed to fit me well. Quite a few styles look nice on but they were all styles with a tiffany blue stem. I am not sure how I feel about the tiffany blue-- I do like the color but I am not sure I will like them in a professional setting.. and I am concerned they are too young. I DO love the havana tortoise which is very dark and not all that busy. Unfortunately, the store didnt have many styles that use the havana on the stem as well as the eye pieces. Next weekend I am going to take a sister and niece with me to look at them again. I am starting to consider getting two pairs. The styles I am looking at are much less expensive than some of the other offerings.. and considering I am in a bad place when one breaks, it seems smart to have a backup. Here's a Tiffany style I am liked.. what do you think? Do the T blue stems look too young?

Anglo - you would love this place. They have a vintage room with all kinds of frames from days gone by. I love the extreme cat eye frames from the 60s but I'm not bold enough to go for those. I have a friend who has them and they look great on her. i have had that same experience where they all look the same. In fact my last two pairs were way too similar. I decided now that I'm 60 I'll splurge and get just what I want which is why I went to this place.

Another fan of Warby Parker here (actually, three altogether, including DD and DS). DD, who wears contacts, needed a backup pair for travelling. Via their Home Try-On program, she easily found a pair she liked -- cannot beat the $95 price. DS also wears contacts and wanted a backup pair: loves his WPs so much that he wears glasses more frequently than contacts. I've usually been able to keep my frames, just purchase lenses (as my vision Rx changes), then have the optician swap out the lenses during one visit. A couple of years ago, I was told that 'new laws' prohibited this. I would need to leave my glasses with them so they could send them to the shop for the swap -- two weeks without my glasses...no can do. I purchased a pair of WP progressives last summer, and they've been perfect.

Ooh, good, I am SO glad you weren't considering pink for your lenses, I haven't seen those since the 70's, and even then they weren't appealing!

I wear glasses too, and the unfortunate thing about frames is that you do have to try them on before choosing. Even one millimeter higher or lower on one side or in the middle will make or break the deal.

Go in armed with your knowledge and your "want" list and let the salesperson show you those. Hopefully you will score with exactly what you want. I went in last year (my insurance covers up to $300/year for glasses) and I am very hard on my glasses, so I do need to replace them yearly. I headed for the usual wire rim section, my husband headed to the designer section and I got a pair with purple metalic rims and blue metallic arms. Never would have picked them out myself, but they are a good match for me and fun!

Every glasses store you see just go in and try on pairs, it is free and you will have a larger search pool.

BTW, like the pink frame idea!!!

Oh, I've been trying on frames. I think that I'll probably get the pink ones. I like the purple ones that you picked.
