Induction Cooktop ... Miele or Bosch
Comments (13)Mary, my DW and I were finalizing our appliance choices when your original post got me scrambling to look at the installation instructions for the Thermador. My wife really likes that mirror finish so the Thermador is her top choice. Like you, we are planning to put a 30" oven underneath to maximize cabinet space. We had the chance to see both the Thermador and Miele induction cooktops live in their showrooms. I was leaning strongly towards the Miele before seeing the demos, but now I'm not so sure. Thermador - Pros - intuitive to use, probably like the Bosch models. Select hob, directly pick strength, boost if necessary. You can use the + and - as well, but I think that's only necessary to get to the 1/2 strengths, eg 5.5. Has individual timers for each element and supposedly a general timer. Miele - Pros - More powerful elements in general (the Thermador has the most powerful central one). Has a "suspend" function if I remember correctly where you can turn down all the elements at once until you return, then they go back to their original settings. Has individual timers as well. Not sure about the general timer, but I believe it does as well. Elements are "programmable" to different timed settings (check in manual). Warranty if you buy before the end of the month is 5 years (if installed by Miele) vs 2 years for Thermador. For us, the Thermador would be a better fit, even if they didn't offer the mirror finish. The Miele looks great with the uniform top and it has great functions, but it may be a bit too complicated for people who haven't studied the manual. We have frequent stay over guests and we feel that people would feel comfortable using the Thermador after a short introduction. The Miele uses different symbols, etc which may take a little getting used to. However, if we were in a different situation, we might pick the Miele since it's more customizable and has a longer warranty and reputation. Have you asked about warranties when you install ovens underneath cooktops? I'm pretty sure if they are the same manufacturer, the warranties remain intact. But what if they are different manufacturers? Eg Wolf oven under Thermador induction?...See MoreDrawer below Bosch 800 induction stovetop
Comments (4)I have a utensil drawer under the Bosch 800 induction cooktop. It was no problem for the cabinet maker and we have had no issues with it. -- never gets too warm in the drawer. You will notice that the sides are scooped to accommodate the cooktop....See MoreWhich induction cooktop required the least clearance above?
Comments (13)The instructions for our Bosch 500 series cooktop advises to have any cabinets a minimum of 30 vertical inches away unless they are of stainless steel or similar type of non-combustible material. Sorry to hear that you can't go 36" wide. Also keep in mind that the cooktop actually needs 4.25" total from the back of your space to the front edge of your countertop. I keep forgetting which is which.. I think it is 2.25" in the back and 2" in the front. Yes, I believe they are worth it. At the time, we were researching and buying ours last spring, there were many negative reviews regarding the GE and Thermador models. One of the reasons we went for Bosch was the overflow detection and shutoff feature. It will detect any overflowing pot, sound an alarm and turn off the heat to that pot, thus minimizing cooktop spillage to be cleaned up. To install your induction cooktop, you will need a plumber to close off your gas line. Does your electrical panel have the available amperage or room to add it on to the panel? For example, the Bosch 30" 500 series induction cooktop requires a 40 amp breaker. You would need to have an electrician do the breaker work. You need to include these items in your overall cost of your cooktop. Is induction worth it? I thought so after reading about gas stoves and increases in respiratory health concerns online....See More36" induction cooktops: Wolf / Miele / Thermador / Bosch??
Comments (23)sherri1058: I pretty much agree with you: reliability is key for me, but neither the online reviews nor Consumer Reports always gives one a clear bottom line, at least for me. Negative reviews may overly influence me. But re. the function of appliances these days: I think many digital interfaces are way over-designed with too many layers to go through to set it -- that's what I want to avoid on my oven choice! sjhockeyfan: Thanks for your input -- I appreciate it. Most of the negative comments have been from the Benchmark flex users, I think. I am trying to "gang" purchases as much as reasonably possible, but expect that will still mean 2-3 brands, at minimum (Bosch cooktop and/or side swing oven + DW, for example). htc2015: I was given links some time ago (sorry, did not save) that assured me that there were no significant health risks, except some potential risks to a pacemaker user. I am hypochondriacal and have had cancer, so I took this seriously....See Moregrumpydave
