Scuff Mark on my New Stainless Steel Microwave!!

i used the green scruffy side of the sponge on my stainless steel microwave on accident, and when i dried it off, there was a big scuff mark taking up about a 1x1 inch square. its not pretty. the microwave has a finish on it, like where all the lines go the same way, so i don't think i could just sand/buffer the mark out without it still sticking out from the original pattern on the microwave. please help???

Amazing how many people use the green sponge by accident. It is amazing, you would never think it would mar the service. It is not like you hear scruffy and grinding sound, feels so innocent on the surface. My wife did something similar. Sometimes you do it without even thinking. I know people that do not buy the green sponges anymore because they always make that mistake without knowing.

There have been a couple of threads discussing MW's and how there are really only a few MW manufacturers, and the other brands (what you mentioned, DCS, Dacor, Viking, KitchenAid) are simply re-badges of those manufacturers (mostly Sharp and Panasonic). So if you buy DCS or Dacor or Viking, you will be paying a significant upcharge for those names, but for the same machine that could cost you several hundred dollars less if you bought it as a Sharp or Panasonic. You GO, @Kathy Linn! I resolved early-on in our kitchen design to adopt a "no-stainless" policy (more for the looks than the upkeep), and so set out to find an antique, enameled stove (for cleanability in addition to looks) and even went with copper sinks to avoid SS. My first kitchen was all-white when we bought the house, and not really in a good way - laminate countertops and mdf cabinets in addition to white appliances. It was more work keeping the countertops white than the fridge (although the door handle did yellow with time) but I was done with white by the time we moved. For our build I settled on a 1929 Glenwood, restored at a shop outside Boston. It was a splurge but like yours (which is also very handsome) one we'll never need to replace. I'd like to think if consumers start throwing the SS junk back in appliance companies' (and designers') faces and going with restored antiques or otherwise reliable, easy-to-clean appliances with actual color options that we don't have to replace after 5-10 years, maybe they'll stop telling us what we should want and start producing quality again.

We just purchased all new appliances for our new kitchen and I was considering the black stainless. However, the sales guy advised me against it for all the reasons listed above. He explained how the "finish" is really just a film over stainless steel and showed an example of how it scratches on a floor model. It was enough to steer me away and go for the more traditional stainless. I have had the fridge for about 6 months and it cleans up really well with little to no fingerprint marks. The microwave, dishwasher and stove are being delivered on Saturday. All of my appliances for the past 9 years have been Whirlpool and I have been pretty happy with them.

Since a kitchen is rather expensive, I would get it the way I really like it, even if it costs a bit more at first. So you might want to determine how you feel about the stainless steel. Is it really something you do not like? Then get the white one and spend that 1K extra. On the other hand you might be able to make it work for you with some stainless steel accents elsewhere in the kitchen? Maybe some bowls, a vase, and/or a stainless steel faucet? Or go for drawers that do need handles and get some sleek stainless steel ones? If you somehow do like the stainless steel, you could also try to sell the white appliances, if you feel you have too many of those then. After only three years you might still get a decent amount for them. How long are you planning to live there? Will the new kitchen help sell the place for a good price later on? Saving a bit now, might cost a lot in pleasure and/or return later on. Hope this helps.

I do feel bad for you. I think I should throw the green scrubbies out. I recently used one to try to clean the oven floor of my new Bluestar range. Now I have fine scratches even on the enamel of that! They are not too visible except when the oven light is on and then....Oh well, it should not affect the function. The green sponges are EVIL!

I am sure over time you will notice them less but it is so upsetting at the time. Best of luck.

I think what's puzzling is that these kitchen appliances have such fragile finishes. These are KITCHEN appliances and I would expect that they are meant to be used daily. They should be sturdy enough for daily use with FOOD and the finish should be durable enough to stand up to cleaning. Same thing for cookware - if it can't go in the dishwasher, what's the point.
