stainless steel countertop microwave

I have a 30 yr. old Sharp that is about to crater. I am thinking about replacing it with the Sharp stainless R530ES but I am curious whether the DCS, Dacor, Viking, KitchenAid microwaves are worth the extra expense. Does anyone have any experience with the Sharp R530ES? What about the high-end microwaves? The reviews I read about the Viking were not kind.

This isn't on your list, but I really like our stainless Panasonic (also a countertop style). We had the white one in our last house and now bought the same in stainless for our new one. My parents have always had Sharp and have always been happy, but don't know the model number(s).

I doubt they are worth any extra $$. Have you checked Consumers Report for their recommendations?

cmg01 ~ Do you know how the Monogram microwave is different from the regular GE or GE Profile? We're considering the GE Profile PEB2060 but if the Monogram (which is a better-looking unit, IMO) is better, then we might pay for the upgrade... antss ~ Thanks. I will check out the Viking. I do LOVE the Panasonic microwaves -- both the look and their features. However, they don't make their own trim kits (I called and they referred me to Microtrim). I have only about a week to get this delivered for the contractor to install for us, so Microtrim will be cutting it close, and also they only make the trim w/ the slats, not the smooth kind. Most of the other brands I can just order directly from the dealer who got all of our kitchen appliances. We're already getting the Gaggenau Combi-Steam, so thought a "gee wiz bang speed oven" would be overkill (although I'd love one!). That's why we're going for a reg ol' microwave w/ trim kit.

I have a 10 yr old microwave oven that will soon need replacement--ran across a Bosch combination unit that I could buy in barely used ( one month) condition for $300-400--retail price is about $700. Bosch HMB8050 Stainless Steel Built-In Series 1.5 Cubic Foot Capacity Wondered if anyone had experience or advice? I like the concept of having a longer lasting oven with the convection feature..but even at this price, it is expensive. Thanks in advance John

We've had a Panasonic 1250W (2.2 cu. ft. & 1250 watts) stainless microwave for at least two years & have been very happy with it. It can still be found for about $195, but there should be newer Panasonic models available.

I'm on my 3rd set of stainless counters. I put most hot stuff on them but I don't put hot cast iron or glass on them because I'm paranoid about my cooking vessel experiencing thermal shock and cracking. I do nothing to baby the counters. But I have large counters, and they are messy, so the pot of boiling goo doesn't always end up in the same place. I wouldn't worry about baking sheets and broiler pans in the same place over and over but heavier things might be a concern for you. Of course, I wouldn't care; that's just the spot where the hot pans go. Patina! (That said, it's easy to leave a trivet there if you always put stuff in the same place.) I would have done Corian in white because I love their integrated sinks, but they didn't have the sink model I wanted anymore (20 years too late). You could do a combo!

I have had the Bosch stainless microwave for about 8 months. Very happy with it. It is a countertop model, however I bougt the stainless trim kit as it was a replacment for the original built-in Kitchenaid. Looks and works very good.

There have been a couple of threads discussing MW's and how there are really only a few MW manufacturers, and the other brands (what you mentioned, DCS, Dacor, Viking, KitchenAid) are simply re-badges of those manufacturers (mostly Sharp and Panasonic). So if you buy DCS or Dacor or Viking, you will be paying a significant upcharge for those names, but for the same machine that could cost you several hundred dollars less if you bought it as a Sharp or Panasonic.
