Why would I want a CEDAR closet?

Hello!

We are finally putting the walls back together and have an option of finishing (some of) the closets in cedar plank. One of the closets is in the basement, where the air is noticeably cooler and wetter. Its walls are made of bricks, and so we can even put the cedar planks instead of (mold-resistant) sheetrock.

Do we want to do that? What's the advantage of having the cedar planks in the closet? Yes, the smell is nice, but it wears off in under a year, I hear. Does cedar keep the clothes safer (against moth, etc.)? Or does that property wear off as well?

Only you can decide if you want a cedar closet. The aroma does dissipate with time but a light sanding of the surface will bring it back.

Thanks for the feedback, Mike. I'm not into the smell, honestly Â I'm concerned about the moth-repelling property... Does it stay for long, or does it wear out along with the smell?

The aroma of cedar is supposed to disguise the smell of wool and other animal based fabrics so the moths won't lay their eggs in it and some versions of it might actually kill the larvae (which might have already been in the clothing when it was stored) but in general this is not a very effective way to protect your clothes. If you go the cedar route you should use as much Juniperus virginiana (Eastern Red Cedar, Eastern Juniper, Red Juniper, and Pencil Cedar) as possible but be aware that it will lose its effectiveness as the oils dry out. Perhaps it's possible to buy the oil extract in a form that can be replaced.

The xoom will be the one to watch, very nice specs and big competition with what all it can do plus it will be running Android 3.0 Honeycomb. It is an awesome tablet but in the next month or so a lot of awesome Android 3.0 tablets will be hitting the market. Thought I'd chime in with my closet system, although I admit I like the idea of the rings....In my tiny closet I have blouses, then skirts then dresses. When I rehang a worn item that can be worn again, it not only goes on the very left side of the closet no matter what type of item it is, I use a bright colored flocked hanger, instead of the black flocked ones the clean items are on. (Except skirts on a skirt hanger. But are identified easily as worn as they are in the "used" section.) Admittedly, this is a doubled system, that most would not need but helps me. I originally just used the different colored hangers and put the used blouse in with the blouses, etc., but eventually liked the idea of keeping the worn items out of the clean ones so started just putting them separately, naturally still using the bright hangers. If I forget and hang a worn item in with the clean, or vice versa, the hanger will identify it. When I do laundry, it is easy to locate the clothes that will be washed...(aside from the rest in the hamper!)

A fat quarter is a quarter of a yard of fabric which measures 18" x 22" (in other words, 1/2 yard of fabric which is then cut in half parallel with the selvege); a regular quarter of a yard of fabric measure 9" x 44". Fat quarters are useful as you can cut a larger variety of pieces from them given their "extra" height and allows for more pieces to be cut on the vertical grain of the fabric.

The tightness of the construction has more to do with the repelling moths that the actual cedar small.

High concentrations of cedar oil can kill clothes moth larvae, but you're not likely to find levels that high in a cedar closet...not for long, anyway. However, the smell of cedar oil blocks the moths' ability to detect a food source for their potential offspring (that is, your woolens as a place to lay eggs) and also interferes with their pheromone detection, so they can't find mates. Herbs like citronella, peppermint, and rosemary do the same thing. Insect pests tend to stay away because it messes up their natural navigation systems. Not all insects are repelled by cedar (Dermestid/carpet beetles, for example, are not) but most moths with wool-eating caterpillars are.
As Mike said, running a little sandpaper over the cedar planking refreshes the aroma.
Should you have a cedar closet? Well...do you have a lot of good-quality woolens to store-- cashmere blankets, nice wool coats? If so, I think a cedar closet would be a good idea; if not, there's not much point.
You can put your woolens in air-tight bags, but they can come out musty if there's any moisture (even from high humidity when you seal them up). Moths can get into openings one tenth of one mm in size, so most sweater-box storage containers aren't tight enough to exclude them. If you've only got a couple woolens to store, Zip-lock bags in the freezer is one pretty safe option.
If you're so-so on the smell, I wouldn't think it'd be worth putting in more than one cedar closet. Also, you mentioned the cooler, damper basement closet-- you might have problems with cedar planking warping and curling. I'd stick with mold-resistant Sheetrock for that one.
