Counter cut-out too wide

I also poted this on the Kitchen board.

I'm replacing an old electric Kenmore Classic Grille cooktop which has replaceable modules with the gas 30" Jenn-Air Model #JGCP430ADP. Both are slide in units, so the front to my kitchen cabinet was cut-away, which is why I am paying the extra bucks to get another slide in cooktop. (Parts are no longer available for the Kenmore).

My problem is that the cut-out width for the Kenmore was 30" and the cutout for the Jenn-air is 28 7/8".

Would adding 1/2" wood strips, screwed into the countertop(Formica covered particle board)to narrow the gap, support the weight (over 100lbs) of the Jen-air unit? Or would I be safer adding 2x4 supports at the corners?

Also. anyone have any experience with the Jenn-air pro-style models?
