So many questions - part II - Dessert/Tea Set

I'm assuming tea set because there is a tea pot with straining holes inside the pot - gotta love my deductive reasoning.

The set is 12 cups and saucers, dessert size plates, tea pot, creamer, sugar. There is also one serving bowl and that's the piece that throws me but now I'm wondering if they aren't really a set. You'll see what I mean with the marks. If it was a cake plate, it would make sense in a dessert set but it's not large enough that it would serve 12 with any kind of dessert that would be in a bowl. I have little memory of this ever being used - not even sure if it came from my maternal or paternal grandmother but it was in my mom's china hutch and I know it was not hers originally - not her taste.

Couldn't find anything at first thinking the first letter was a K but finally found Hutschenreuther. Any ideas how I would find the pattern name? I'd like to get a sense of value, if it's collectible. I need to have a sale!

This is the cup and saucer and mark. This says Czechoslovakia but what I find on a search says either Germany or Bavaria - any thoughts? Is it possibly not a set even though they look identical in pattern? Is this mark something other than Hutschenreuther? I'm so confused.

This is the serving bowl and it's mark. It's the only piece with this mark, the rest are all marked like the cup.

And this is the teapot - I'm not going to post photos of every piece - you get the idea.

Very good -- You found it!

I don't think the bowl is the same, though it's certainly very similar. I've seen similar patterns (base with gold webbing or mottling) in various colors made by Hutschenreuther and Tirschenreuth and a few other Bohemian porcelain makers.

I'd like to know what that type of work is called. Is that what you're still looking for?

Sheri, Oh, it is drooling time! I can almost taste the tomatoes now. Sungold, Persimmon, and Cherokee Chocolate: if you get ripe tomatoes from only these three plants, you'll still think it is the best tomato year ever, taste-wise! Dr. Wyche's has always done better for me than Kellogg's Breakfast, but then, I have grown DWY for 5 or 6 years and KB for only 2, so Dr. Wyche's has had more opportunity to excell. Dr. Wyche's is a pretty heavy producer, and quite tasty. It also shows great disease resistance. Black Zebra is a very attractive-looking tomato, but I think Black Pineapple (which isn't really black at all, LOL) tastes much better. I have found that every striped tomato I've ever grown has looked pretty, and tasted no better than average. (sigh) Well, I take that back--the one exception is Indian Stripe. Momotaro is probably better than Carmello, but then, your taste buds and your growing conditions are different from mine, so you might find the opposite to be true. I do not think you'll be disappointed in Momotaro though. I haven't grow Alamo. We love Sweet Million and Black Plum, which is our postal carrier's favorite tomato ever since I started sharing them with her several years ago. You're right--I wasn't wild about Japanese Black Trifele, but lots of people love it, so maybe it was just me. Your Mystery Surprise is probably either a tomato that "lost its label" during the seedling growing process, or is from a new grow-out that DJ is trialing and perhaps hasn't even named yet. (I think mysteries and surprises are fun!) Yellow Platfoot Brandywine is yummy, and so is Black Pear. Brandy Boy is the best. If I could only grow one variety, this might be it. There are a few that taste better, but NONE of them can match BB's heavy production and disease resistance. And, even though there are a few that I think taste better than BB, none of them is loads and loads better, only a little better. I don't think I have grown Black Pearl, but isn't it a smallish tomato, more like Black Cherry? I think it is the Burpee hybrid that is said to taste more like a Concord grape after it has been refrigerated? If it even comes close to tasting like Black Cherry, it will be a real winner. I can tell you are ready to get the plants going. Have fun, but be careful and watch the weather. I feel sure we have another freeze or two to get through before Old Man Winter departs and lets us have Spring. I believe you will have more tomatoes this year than last. Remember that so much of last year.....the excessive rainfall, the continual cloudiness, the cooler-than-usual weather all combined to severely affect tomato production. Conditions like that are beyond our control AND exceptionally rare. This has GOT TO be a better year, right? By the way, my little container-grown Better Bush tomato has now formed a second tomato--it is just about the size of an English pea. I am so worried that a deer or possum will get my first green tomato that I carry this plant inside every single night. (It is a very pampered plant at this point. Today I picked up a lady bug and carried her over to the plant and sat her on a leaf, just so she could cruise around and hunt for any bugs that might be lurking.) I am SO looking forward to the first ripe tomato this year. No matter the size of the tomato, we always make BLT sandwiches out of the first ripe one. I am going to order the world's best bacon from the New Braunsfels Smokehouse just so we'll have it for the first BLT of 2008. (Most of the time we eat healthy and watch our fat intake and cholesterol, but BLT time is special and calls for a total disregard of the healthy eating rules!) Keep me posted on how planting goes. I hope to be out in the garden a lot the next few days if the weather cooperates. We are under all kinds of storm watches today, tonight and tomorrow, but so far everything is going either a couple of counties west of us OR a couple of counties east of us, and that's OK with me. Awww, thanks so much Jim, RamblinRozez, Harold, Boxo, Carol, and Aimeekitty! Harold, we miss you and Adele! and hope and hope she is continuing to get stronger and better! I was looking at Climbing America today because I've got another very large bud that will open and it reminded me how spectacular yours and Boxo's must be looking! Like realllll climbers, whereas mine are just a few cane wannabes, lol! and yes, I'm thinking in July-August, some of your Meyer lemons must be in the works! Harold yes, I love Folklore. The scent is FANTASTIC and falls second to Mr. Lincoln. Speaking of scent, I really enjoy the honeysuckle sweetness of Cornelia and Ghislaine de Feligonde. Penny Lane smells like gardenia. My Asiatic lilies are about to start blooming too!!!! they're getting real fat and heavy so another set of lumps should be helping themselves along. Florence-inspired Compassion and Viking Queen give such pretty blooms, but I'm always missing out on Viking Queen, because being a baby band, she blooms so fast and I get up so late, I miss out on so many pretty showings, whereas Compassion is verrrrry forgiving of my late to bed, late to rise habits and always looks pretty and opens very gradually, thank goodness! Viking Queen is one prolific constant bloomer too. She is just like her namesake, a baby Viking! She just shot up a 2'2" brand new cane as well, and is trying to match the Big Boys, lol! Oh, by the way, here are my nightmare invasive gladiolus. Do not let their lively cheery little faces fool anyone! They are highly invasive in my garden. I had to transplant 50 of those things because they were taking over my entire rose bed. And now they've taken over the most barren places I could plant them at! To this day, I keep having to dig up dozens upon dozens of those things because they keep resprouting in my rosebed. Sneaky little things are too pretty to burn with a flame torch, lol!

Folks, I forgot to update that 2011 is the Year of Camera Experiment. I used to have to wait for the perfect lighting either dawn or sunset, lol! and with certain roses they'd mushroom out and lose their spirals by then, haha! So this year I started messing with the manual settings of my Canon Rebel XSi. I sent these to Jim first to look at, lol! The Ralph Lauren Cover Boy model for the camera is Jim's Baby Napoleon Distant Drums :D 1. Here is the default Sports setting 2. Here is the TV setting of 160 with the wrong fluorescent instead of the sunlight setting but still kind of cool 3. Here is a TV setting of 250 with sunlight setting 4. Here is my favorite TV setting of 200 with sunlight setting I also forgot to demo my frustrations with how HTs mushroom out into moppy blooms with open stamens in the heat... and when it gets cooler HTs start to "normalize"; not quite there but better... I also forgot to show 2 more blooms. Crepuscule is going to be shovel-pruned next year. It started out as a 5" band and grew to be a 6' tall rose, but after the first winter it had to be cut down to a 7" rose from which it never regained much vitality afterwards. It doesn't have quite enough scent for me to have patience. Only highly fragrant roses get coddled in my garden, lol! Another rose, Aromatherapy. This rose is highly fragrant and the color is the perfect deeper bubblegum pink that is slower to fade. But it is highly BS vulnerable and requires a lot of Gardenville sea tea to keep it healthy- way too expensive to sustain, lol! It is coddled because of the fragrance. I may replace it in a few years with Laguna if a friend from England likes her Laguna. I would replace Aromatherapy with Belinda's Dream which is HT PERFECT in bloom form! but the pink is not the deep pink alas!

No, actually I didn't find it - the H & C is similar but not the same. And I can't find Hutschenreuther with a lion at all. so I'll take anything - suggestions where to look, specific information about the type of work, wild guesses, even! Make up a story for me - I sure won't know!

Hutschenreuther- Made in Germany, hard paste, Est.1864 Lorenz Hutschenreuther was the maker. Exact same as the mark with lion on it is on page 153-a of Kovel's"Dictionary of Marks- Pottery and Porcelain" by Crown books. Czechoslovakia has been seen on imports as early as 1918 according to Kovel's New Dictionary of marks 1850 to present but of course new companies are discovered every so often. It is possible that part of family moved from 1 country to the other so makers could be brothers or father & son. Often did same work as your parents in olden times.

Forgot to tell you it is a lovely set!! Can you enjoy a cup of tea in the cups, seems like long ago I drank from a very dainty cup & it got quite hot. My GF has a large silver tray(minister's wife) & she has all her lipsticks on it,& it looks great!(your other post-sorry)

I know less than nothing about china, but that's beautiful stuff whether it's a set or not. In Kovel's New Dictionary of Marks (the only reference I have for china, etc), I found the mark on the tea cup except the 'S' & 'Czechoslovakia' are missing. The notation says "Haas & Czjzek, Shlaggenwald, Bohemia (now Homi Slavkov, Czechoslovakia). They produced Porcelain & Green. Mark was used after 1918 to c.1945. The company was in business from 1867 to 1945+".

The company also had a location in Chodau, Bohemia & this was printed on some of the marks so I'm guessing the 'S' on yours represents the city of manufacture & 'Czechoslovakia' means it was made after the borders changed. BTW, the pine tree motif seems to have been prevelant in Bohemian porcelain marks.

I'm off to see if I can find anything on the other mark.

The "New Dictionary" says the above Hutschenreuther lion mark was used 1955-1969 if that's any help.

Founded in 1792 by Johann Georg Paulus, Johann Poschl, and Johann Reumann without a porcelain permit. SlavkovskÃ½ is the Bohemian name of the forest and mountains surrounding this area. This is the first operational Porcelain factory in Bohemia.

1867 Johann Czjzek, a newphew, became a partner. The company name was Haas & Czjzek.
1872 the company bought the Portheim & Sons factory in DolnÃ Chodov, Czech Republic (Chodau, Bohemia, Austria).
After 1992 the HornÃ Slavkov (Schlaggenwald) plant became independent from the nationalized company and is still in operation today as Haas & Czjzek .

Both factories were named Haas & Czjzek until after WWII. The HornÃ Slavkov factory used an "S" or Schlaggenwald in the marks and the Chodov factory used a "C" or Chodau.

So let me see if I have this right...... the serving bowl was probably bought at a later time than the rest of the pieces based on the marks, from 1955-69. The dessert set could have been produced anywhere from 1918-45. I know those borders and others changed back and forth many times. My father's family was from Hungary, my mother's from the Ukraine, but less than 100 miles apart and the border that existed then has changed.

sunnyca - I have no idea if the cups get too hot to use - never used them, and it's very unlikely that I ever would. I have my own china with cups in a very similar shape and on the rare (and I mean REALLY rare) occasions that I would want a fancy dessert table, I'd use mine.

Does anyone know if there is a name for that type of webbed pattern?

Well that was rude of me - thank you all for your help. I kept looking at those pages of marks and after a while they all looked the same! Sure wish I knew which grandma bought these - no one left to ask, but since my brother is 11 years older, maybe he remembers.

Yes - bought at another time, and also made by another firm. Hutschenreuther is a well-known maker with many listings on ebay, Ruby Lane, etc. (I have a wonderful set of 12 Hutschenreuther buffet/cabinet plates, so I sometimes check there to see if I can find any matching pieces.)

I imagine someone saw the bowl and thought it would match the cups and saucers -- either thinking they were the same maker, or perhaps knowing they weren't, but judging 'close enough'. I see AntiqueSilver ID'd the Hutschenreuther mark to 1955-1969, so that version makes sense.

If you'd like to find more similar pieces, I'd watch Tirschenreuth and Hutschenreuther both on ebay.

I know nothing (or even less-lol) about this, but I do know that it was probably made between 1918-1939 because Hitler invaded the Sudetenland and Czecholslovakia ceased to exist during the war. It did not re-emerge as a country until 1945, so I suppose your pieces could be after that, but to me they look more of the era between the wars.

cyn thanks for that extra bit of info.

deepfreeze first you need to have your pictures you want to post on your own computer - are they? Then you need to upload your pictures to an online site like photobucket, picasa or tinypic and then use their codes to put a picture in a post here. It sounds more complicated than it really is. Check out those sites and then if you have questions, start your own post so it doesn't get lost in this one and ask for help.
