Clarke Bros & Co. Victorian Furniture IDENTIFICATION

Hi all - I usually spend most of my time in the old houses forum since restoring the house is the biggest priority right now. But, recently, I picked up a small antique I would love to find out more about.

Check out the photos of both my little Victorian Ebonized Music Cabinet and the photos from the E & R Dubrow reference book on late American Made Victorian furniture. Luckily, I found my little cabinet in the book listed as item number 265 by the Clarke Bros. & Co. furniture makers. I cant find anything out about them and the book doesn't list any information on this company - like where they were located, when they were in existence, or likewise.

I'm going to try to write to the publisher, Schiffer books, to see if they might be able to assist, but thought I'd throw this out to the GardenWeb community to see if any of you know anything about it.

Here's a stereoview storage carrier with mark containing same spelling, but this also has Cincinnati on it.

If this thread is still 'alive'...I would greatly appreciate a 'use-identification' anyone can offer. I have no idea what it is...found it in my parents collection and they were married late 1940s. It is 3.5" in diameter x 3" tall, and only markings are "Wallace" & "88" on the underside. (I covered my Dad's personal etched i.d. info w orange tape). It has a fish and maybe acanthus leaf design, a square opening on top-center, and round opening (not threaded) on bottom-center. Is this some sort of flower-stem holder for a vase?? Thanks for any thoughts!!!

If we do fashion, (or art) I would be willing to set it up because I think it's been a while. I have some thoughts about how I would like to do it. I don't think it necessarily has to be current fashion, although current fashion is so diverse, that covers an awful lot of bases. What I suggest is to use fashion as an inspiration or a particular garment as inspiration and this can drive the color scheme or the style of kitchen, and it could be done as a relatively subjective interpretation, or as objectively as you want: Meaning a Menswear kitchen could have a tan floor, navy cabinets, brass hardware, a striped backsplash and leather seating--as a classic "blue blazer" kitchen. A bridal dress could inspire an all Ivory kitchen. I would *not* want the kitchen to take a singular fabric from the fashion world and simply use it as a textile in the kitchen. The Idea is to reinterpret the fashion in the materials used for kitchens. I don't think a historical fashion needs to inspire a historical kitchen. This Ikat dress from the 18th c. could inspire a contemporary kitchen, for example.

That's a tough one! Once we got started and picked our cabs, we wanted to find a granite that was beautiful in its own right, and complemented, but didn't detract from the wood grain on our cabs. Same thing when we looked for backsplash tiles--we didn't want ones that would steal the show from our granite or cabs. However, the initial things we built the kitchen around were gaining storage space, and gaining a bigger stove and a bigger fridge than we had in our old kitchen, while staying within the same sq. footage we had started out with (in the old kitchen). Doing that saved us a ton of money that would have gone towards building an addition. Also, the one thing I made sure we'd have, right from the early planning stages, was a feeding zone for our cats. Too many water dish spills made that an A-#1 priority in this house!

Are you thinking of doing a very large mirror that you just lean? That was very much in vogue a few years ago... I like it. In my last house I had a dressing room and one set of closet doors were mirrored. I preferred wood panel, so my carpenter replaced them, He then took the old door and made a big frame for it with heavy molding. He painted it nickel using metallic paint (I think RL makes it). You might be able to have someone make something for you for less than the oversized ones cost. They can even buy and glue on wooden appliques of garland, etc. Try a glass store or even a framing place. Here is the one from my old dressing room. Not a great pic but you get the idea! Try CL, Ebay and ... who will recall that online dealer in high quality used furniture? It was a PA co.? KevinMP got a breakfront there and I think Beagles, too.They sold used LaBarge IIRC. THANKS moonshadow. Interestingly, since posting this question, I found an entry on the Univ. of Idaho Web site for a Charles Clarke who worked for Clarke Bros furniture of Cincinnati - your reply leads me to believe this is probably the same firm. I have actually found quite a few antique furniture pieces in the Louisville/Southern Ohio region that I can identify on the Clarke Bros pages of the Dubrow reference book. Kind of makes sense if the company was in Cincy. Thanks so much for that link - its good to see their stamp on something.

Oh, you're welcome! I always get a kick out of trying to track something down. ;) If I get a chance to look some more and find anything I'll post back. Or if you find out more I'd be curious to know!

That happens so often on my local craigslist. Something I've never seen before comes up, and suddenly there are three of them. Then, nothing like them is seen again for months or years. I can only conclude that people who own those things have similar rhythms in their lives or something.

I like the point on your blog about machine vs. hand made. Something that has also struck me is that handmade had a whole different meaning when the tools used were also handmade. There was a whole lot of ingenuity and skill back then that I just don't feel we have anymore... maybe that's part of the charm of those old things.

You would probably get a lot better information at a web site called "rarevictorian". They focus on victorian furnishings and are a wealth of information both in their threads and what you can find reading articles they've written. It's a great website for anyone collecting victorian furnishings.

Wow, ohjim, lol, what are the odds?! I've seen what KarinL mentions, usually for something I'm looking for. Dry for months or years and then all of a sudden an appearance of multiples. ;)

I just came across your post while doing some family history research. My great-grandfather was Robert E. Clarke, and in 1874 when he was about 19 he set up a business with his slightly older brother George in Brooklyn where they lived. They called themselves "Clarke Bros. & Co." and had what they called a "Bracket Store" located on Fulton Street at the junction of Flatbush Avenue. I believe they published at least this one catalog (dated Fall 1875) which can be seen in its entirety, digitized on-line at http://www.archive.org/details/illustratedcatal00clar

The business doesn't seem to have lasted beyond 1877. The family had left Brooklyn by 1878 and Robert became an actor and elocution teacher. I don't know what became of George. And, unfortunately, I don't know any more about this bracket & furniture business, but would like to!
