Cigarette smoke seeping into apartment. What are my options?
Comments (8)camlan - at first I thought it was coming through the bathroom vent, so I closed it. However, I have still smelled it in my bedroom, so it may very well be the ventilation ducts. It's funny, because I went to the office and explained everything and they told me that my upstairs neighbor had mentioned the same thing (I think she said that it was coming from her linen closet which is also located in the bathroom). To the best of my and the office's knowledge, neither the upstairs nor the downstairs neighbor smokes, so it's kind of a mystery. The office said they were going to have maintenance look into it to see what could be done, so at least they're willing to try to do something about it. Since the OP, I haven't smelled anything yet. gammyt - Really? No complaint? Soooo a health issue isn't a valid complaint if it IS cigarette smoke? If it is not, then it still needs to be looked into as something may not be functioning properly....See MoreNeighbor's smell entering our apartment!!!
Comments (25)I just went through something like this at my place. I got these new neighbours on both sides of me a couple of years ago, and I swear the food they cook smells like dead bodies. No joke. At first I thought they were cooking drugs. For the last year it has been really bad during the pandemic. About a dozen times there was a smell coming into my apartment, and one day I just had enough. I called the super and complained. It was ok for awhile and then it started again. Its obvious they dont care about what the supers say so I let it go for a few more times, and then I called the head office. I spoke with the main secretary of the head office and told him what is going on. Then he told me to send him an email, and the owner responded. Since I have complaint its not that bad. Like, I understand its hard to complain about this issue because it is a sensitive one. However, if you work hard to pay the rent and you follow all the rules, why should you have to put up with a smell that is going to ruin the contents in your apartment to a point where you will have to throw out your furniture when you move out? Its not right. If you feel annoyed, say something and stick up for yourself. Who cares what they think! If they had respect for your in the first place and/or the property, they would of boiled water and vinegar on the stove while they were cooking it....See MoreDark blackish smoke coming from neighbor's oil burner flue
Comments (5)Whether it's a furnace boiler or water heater, all they need to do is have it serviced by a pro that performs a complete service with combustion test & smoke spot test. There's little chance of fire because of smoke. If that were the case, all homes with wood stoves, and our diesel fleet would have burned up years ago. When the flame gets really bad, it's most likely that the cad cell will signal the primary to shut down the burner. Most people that have a burner that's running rich won't smell the fumes unless the unit is a direct vent, has a power-venter or isn't drafting properly due to a blockage, oversized chimney short chimney etc....See MoreNoise from neighbors coming through PTACs - please help!!!
Comments (12)Energy_rater_la & klem1 - thanks to both of you again for your advice. Klem1 - do you have a suggestion for a sound deadening material to put on the walls? And would this material work for floors, too? I spoke to the building contractors who built out the apartments and they swear the walls can't be the problem in the bedroom (where the noise is the worst) because there are no walls with pipes in this room. The bathroom is right next to the bedroom and the bathroom wall with pipes is adjacent/continuous with the bedroom wall where I could make out the voices by putting my ear to it, but THAT bedroom wall is actually a masonry wall! The sound isn't just coming from the bathroom because closing the bathroom door doesn't lessen the sound any. The contractors say maybe the sound is coming through the floors, which are hollow cement. I guess it's possible, but it's hard for me to believe that normal volume voices can travel that much through cement/cork/flooring. I am thinking of hanging the sound-deadening material on different walls and the floor to see if I can locate the source. We haven't put rugs down yet, so if the floors are the problem, maybe it's as simple a solution as this (I really hope so)....See MoreEATREALFOOD
