Need information on oak dresser

Hi,

I am looking to purchase an oak dresser and this is what I know:

It has a sticker with this information on it, The Favorite Line, Milford, NH Boston, MA, F&H trademark, and it is a 6 drawer quartersawn oak dresser, which measures, 46.5"x31.75."

Does anyone have any information on this company and if $275 is a reasonable cost? The condition is fairly good.

I would pay that amount, but only because it is worth it, in my opinion. As to it's true value, I can only offer what I've been told: It's worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it, basically.

However, it is tiger oak, (Veneer? I'm not sure. If so, it's in pretty good condition), and for a comparably sized chest of drawers, a good bargain, definitely. I'd buy it.

I would like to see a picture of inside the drawer and a picture of the back...and the top has some issues....appears to be water stained which may or may not come out.
I'm a cheap skate....I think it's at the top of the price range for such a piece.
And the fact that it has a "sticker" tells me it's not very old.

Thank you Mark! Actually...I was less than clear...I did the buying, refinishing and ... marryingÂ30 years ago now :) In May my husband retires from his now reserve duty. And, thank YOU for your service in the Air Force! My husband works on an AF Base, actually has since he got off of active duty. I thought it looked like, on the small drawers anyway, that the drawer bottom was slid in from behind--which I think is what you are saying to repair that one drawer. Naturally, we don't have a table saw, but I hadn't thought about doing the repair the way you mention--I like your suggestion, keeping most of the original bottom intact! I think I need to sell this piece though, we have one son moving back home today, and another at the end of January...I've had to empty rooms for them. Hopefully the older of the two will get back on his feet and get a career rolling, but the younger might be here a while. Do you have any idea what this might be worth, if I don't fix it, or if I do? I've seen thin boards like what is on the drawer bottom, perhaps I can do the repair pretty quickly, though I'm not positive what will keep it from happening again--maybe it was just the weight in the drawer that caused the problem? In any case, thank you so much for your suggestion. We have all the boys here later today, maybe I can get them to help fix this so I can sell it in better condition. I'm just not seeing ones with the hat box, bow front, quarter-sawn wood (I guess just the drawers?) veneer on the sides and no mirror. I'm guessing it is from the early 1900's, but I'm just so unsure of the value!!! Thank you!

An excellent topcoat in a wet environment is Waterlox - DIY friendly, easy to repair, and has excellent water resistance. Bleed through is usually found with those deep red stains usually found on Mahogany. Shellac is a good barrier to prevent/minimize that. Likely not necessary on the piece you show but no harm in doing it. Caveat there though is the shellac in the can is not de-waxed and may affect your choice of top coat. As for staining the body darker to match the top - probably not necessary. The little bit of color that will peek through after you distress will not appear that much different - and as stated above a bit of dark wax can even it up if it is that noticeable to you. A little dark wax goes a long way so use with a light hand. As for the underside of the top - use a sanding sponge to get under there - easiest if you flip the piece over and work that way. You may not need stain under there but you will want your topcoat to cover it. Here is a link that might be useful: Waterlox

Nosoccermom - thanks for posting the pretty beds. I'd love that last one with different finials. Looking at that one makes me realize I really need to check the ceiling height of the bedroom in the new house though - it's so tall! 1929Spanish and outsideplaying - that might be a good idea to take our bed with us and decide later once we get settled in. I'm just on a purging binge and trying to decide what we need to take since we have so much furniture to move and I've read about movers charging by the pound! Really the bed disassembled won't take up much space itself compared to the rest of the furniture, although it is heavy. Pinkmountain - I haven't showed him pictures yet but DH is actually onboard with getting a new bed and he likes the modern, country look that I like. I think he'd be fine with switching out just one piece, just not with spending so much to replace everything with similar quality furniture. He doesn't care for iron beds as much as I do but I think he would like any of the wood ones posted. Upholstered is an interesting idea too.

Don't let it intimidate you. The only mistake you can make that can't be easily corrected is the color of wood before shellac is applied. Make sure you like the way wood look's because shellac (any clear top coat) will enhance flaws same as desirable features. As Mac suggest's,buy denatured alcohol and shellac flakes. Put some on scrap wood or out of sight area on dresser to get the feel of it. It is best to work fast to cover one panel/section without going back to re-brush. Know that following coats will melt into previously applied coats so no sanding is is required between coats. Dry time between coats is optional from 30 minutes to 30 years. Try not to work in direct sun or in high humidity. Remember,if you decide you would like it to be darker,just switch to darker flakes and carry on. One request,let us know how it worked out. It's important that we know if advice was good,bad or confusing after it's been tested.

I would not worry about the "sticker issue " as much as you should inspect each and every drawer for excess wear on the drawer side board -bottoms (where the drawer slides on the supports of the piece's main structure. We call these "highboys" or "chest of Drawers" around this part of Missouri.
The top looks like it may be veneered as well as the drawer fronts. This is very easy to see on a "natural" finished piece like this. Look for grain "direction changes" on these parts of the piece. If the grain does not continue thru the entire thickness of the particular piece of wood -- it's probably veneer. Solid quarter/sawn curved/bowed drawers are not often seen as the look of the wood will change as you look across the "curve". Veneer is not bad as long as the veneer is tight across the board - you can usually tap on the places with your knuckle and the sound will change if the veneer is loose. Of course sometimes it is obvious if the veneer is raised up.
My guess of the piece's age is that it was made between 1920 -1935.
If all is ok with the piece -- price sounds good to me! I could buy it and probably sell it for more -- Good luck

I see a lot of these type of pieces and they nearly always are vaneer especially on curved drawers. The other part of the equasion is driving from Road Island to New Hampshire to pick up the piece which at today's gas prices might add another $100. I also don't like the condition of the top. I believe I would quickly check some local antique dealers. IMO, I prefer unrefinished pieces where I can see the origional patina but that's just me.

I am trying to find out more about my dresser manufactured by same company and II have had scence a child, so atleast 40 years and i grew up next to Milfird N.H. It apears to be quite old and is not a vaneer. The top being 2 oak boards and sides are paneling. The size 28×16×44 , its had a simple refinishing of just light sanding and stain with new knobs matching the originals. Any imformation on it and its value would be
