made in country of origin..

Does anyone know....when did the words "made in" become mandatory?? For instance, various countries would use only their country name, on goods imported to the USA. At a later date it was mandatory to use the words...made in. Any one know when this practice began??

Made in Japan. made in china, made in usa, etc.

Congress enacted the Tariff Act of 1930 and "COOL" (Country of Origin Labeling) mandated all goods imported into the United States be conspicuously and indelibly labeled with the product's country of origin so that the ultimate consumer will know where it was produced.

Shortly after Congress passed the Tariff Act of 1930, a list of products - including fruits and vegetables in their natural state - were exempted from certain aspects of the labeling law. Even today, items on this so-called "J List" are required to be labeled with the country of origin only on the outermost container in which the imported product reaches the ultimate purchaser - in other words, the shipping container. If the products are removed from the container and placed in holding units or display bins, those units or bins are not considered to be "outermost containers" and, therefore, are not required to be marked.

The McKinley tariff act of 1891 required that imported products be labeled with the country of origin, and in 1914 the words "made in" were required as well and in 1921 it was required that items be labeled with the country of origin in English.
But remember this was only for those items intended for import. Grandma could have brought her mother's tea pot that was unmarked.

Lin, this should answer your question. This is a second reply I received from Andrey today. Ami Ami, I have serached recently through a Russian internet engines and found out about this variety. Vesenniy Michurinskiy 1 has been develoepd by the famous Soviet tomato breeder professor Michail Rubtsov. He was born in 1921 and had became a real icon for generations of Soviet agricultural scientists and was the co-author of well-known Soviet book "Vegetable Gardening" for agricultural colleges, institutes and universities. He has been always a real fan of Michyurin. I don't know if he is still alive, but he was an active scintist even at 85 in 2006. And Vesenniy Michurinskiy 1is a standard Soviet tomato variety bred for early greenhouse yield in cold climates. The names means "Michyurin's Spring Grown". I think it is quite forgotten now here in CIS.

I'm sorry, Ruthie, but I read the Snopes entry regarding bar codes. Before anyone in the US goes to the trouble to copy all those numbers, according to Snopes, they are the European codes, and are NOT the same for the codes use in the US. And even then, the codes can be misleading, because the origen may be hidden by the product being purchased and packaged in a second country. Be sure to read the Snopes article all the way to the end. And remember, the catch phrase, 'spread this to everyone' is usually a red flag.

Alex, consider Tide Pro, its formulated a bit different than what we buy off the shelf. Its formulated to be near neutral PH in order for hotel laundry to hold up to daily washing, so it would be a good choice for a less caustic detergent yet still have great whitening properties. It does in fact have extra sodium percarbonate in it. So all in all it will whiten and be gentle at the same time. Le Blanc and Forever New are both boutique detergents, which I've never found to be anything more than perfumed water, but these two are actually good at what they are intended to do, clean the sheets gently, leaving them with a *finished* feel to them. If you do decide to try one, I'd suggest you try them first with no FS, I think you will be impressed with the silky smooth feel of the sheets. Also ment to say the Tide Pro has a near neutral PH where the Tide with Bleach powder off the shelf has a PH of about 11.

How much shade ? How much light ? this is my 4th year growing with less than 5 hours of DIRECT sun. But direct sun is not the ONLY source of light that plants can utilize. I have read this somewhere that a tomato plant can get more light during/with an overcast skies than under standard florescent lights indoor. In that past I have had garden with about 7 hours of direct sun, That was in Georgia. It was more than adequate where the temps were in 90s and triple digits for months. This is my personal opinion. If I had the liberty to choose a garden spot, I would choose one with 6.5 to 7.5 hours of direct sun for growing tomatoes, in specific.
